As ever, one half of the world are trying to have fun and the other half are trying to stop them.

Clarkson being outrageous is no different to when Ewan McColl sang in a false Scottish accent. An entertainer putting on a persona to entertain.

I bet you wouldn't know his new book was out if it wasn't for this?

Job done, move on.

(Those reading this thread from The USA will no doubt notice that we Brits enjoy being outraged. It's one of our national sports...)

Oh, heck.. I suppose I should hate him too? After all;

1. I work (ish) in the public sector.
2. I own a caravan.
3. I am married to a bell ringer.
4. I enjoy long walks in the country.

But there again, I laughed my head off when he likened the small row of lights adorning new Audi headlights to "looking like a council house at Christmas." Or that if the engine on a TVR Cerbera was a singer, it would be Joe Cocker. Or, when he found the vineyard where "Blue Nun" wine grapes were grown, he cupped a handful of budding grapes, looked at the camera and said "These will be on a dining table in Rotherham next year."

If public sector strikers are to be taken out and shot, can I request whoever cocked up my DVLA form the other month be first on the list?

Just logging into Amazon to buy the new book.

I wonder if folks down South still refer to us as "Jocks"?   I was always quite proud of that nickname....I like being a "Jock"

As far as I'm concerned, Lenny Bruce had it right. He told jokes which were superficially at everyone's expense, but he did it not to denigrate anyone but to make people more aware of the games they're constantly playing on one another...and inside their own minds.

And a bunch of uncomprehending cops kept arresting him for doing so! (thus enforcing the political correctness of their time, which could be summed up in the phrase "Don't think about this or try to understand it...don't think about anything...just react!")

L.H., it is usually Irishmen who tell Irish jokes, too. Some make a living at it, and are possibly very grateful to the politically sensitive who deter others from using their material!

As for the 'suicide by train' controversy, I can see his point. By the time the train has stopped, it is well past the body. If there is an immediate investigation, some thousands of people will not get to where they are going for hours, and arrangements and whole industries will be disrupted. And all this despite the fact that the driver and his passengers can bear no responsibility whatsoever for the incident! It isn't as if he was swerving all over the road, or if he could do an emergency stop, is it!
The driver could just get replaced at the next stop, then come back, (arriving at the same time as the senior policemen, probably) to say 'I didn't see anything /I couldn't do anything.'

Richard - But...I am half Scottish and I find jokes about mean Scots to be hilarious! So does my friend John Ashe, and he is 100% Scottish. Perhaps having the Atlantic Ocean between ourselves and the British Isles has allowed us to reach a different, more detached perspective on the matter?

I am willin' to wrestle him or box him, either way, but I think it might better be a boxin' match, cos if I wrestle him, I'll kill him, and that might put me in legal hot water. Can't have that! Ook! LH, I did put the "joke" in context at the top of the thread. However his other "joke" - that a train should not stop if it hits someone on the track - must have seemed completely unfunny to many people who have lost friends and relatives to suicide.

Also, you should not imply that Clarkson dislikes jetskis. He simply loves noisy toys.

The purported defence of "it's a joke" is not a good one.

I could make a long list of "jokes" that would now be regarded as offensive.

There are the ones about mean Jews and Scots,
the ones about "niggers"
the ones about women
the ones about the Irish
and many more.

If you really wanted to hurt JC, then ignore him.

As is probably obvious, he is one of my heroes.

This video shows what Jeremy Clarkson actually said...he first of all joked by saying that the strikes were a marvelous idea (because the streets were now clearer of traffic than usual, restaurants had more seats available, etc.)...he then jokes by saying that of course he should voice the opposite view in the interest of being fair and unbiased....and he then says that strikers and their families should be shot! (the extreme opposite and ridiculous view)

He is clearly joking throughout those remarks and it's totally obvious if you watch the excerpts in the video and hear everything he said.

Try it.

Jeremy Clarkson live on the air

If you're going to take this matter seriously, then you should also get VERY upset about Randy Newman singing "Short People" (demeaning to the vertically challenged!)....and Lenny Bruce using words like "n*...." (the word that dare not even be printed!), in order to make a very cogent point about the extreme commonality of prejudice in modern society, even among so many who imagine themselves not to BE prejudiced. Hypocrisy, in other words.

If you really think that Jeremy Clarkson wants the strikers and their families shot, then you are probably also well aware that Randy Newman wanted all short people, himself included, sent to death camps for not being tall, and that Lenny Bruce hated Black people and was intent on having them all deported to Africa...

.....NOT!!!!!

JC wow, he's even got the same initials.

Do you know, I begin to understand the pleasure trolls get out of stirring a reaction out of people.

Get yourselves felt, he's no worse than all the deliciously non-PC comedians that have been hounded out of amusing people like me (also from Doncaster) by do-gooders who don't actually manage to achieve that. It's not REAL!

I love his books, I love his provocative style because he KNOWS he's winding you up. If he leaves the BBC, he'll get a more well-paid job elsewhere.

It's worth it just to read some of the 'outraged' comments above - what on earth do you find to amuse yourselves with when you haven't got a Jeremy to be offended at? At least these days, it's possible to crusade from your couch.

Have fun . . .

ok, face facts...

Clarkson is no idiot - and there's not reaaaly much to be gained by hurling childish insults
at the overpaid high profile media buffoon..

What he is.. is a very shrewd cynical opportunist; and for all his higher education & intelligence,
an intellectually lazy figurehead for the millions of unenlightened bigots and bullies
festering and thriving in all aspects of our great British society.

It's easy enough for us lefties to accuse him of a sinister orchestrated propaganda campaign
against all and sundry that might be potentially discomforting to the vested interests
of our deeply entrenched right wing ruling elite..

However, he does without doubt strategically exploit his powerful position in light entertainment at the BBC,
and in various mass printed media,
to promote an agenda..
reinforcing a pernicious biased dominant reactionary cultural/political ideology.

Should the BBC punish him ?
Many of us would demand his suspension.
Some might even wish upon him the same extreme ultimate terms of 'suspension'
meted out to Lord Haw-Haw for his ill judged broadcasting 'gaffs'...

A dilemna is that "Top Gear" is a very popular TV show even amongst Public Sector workers.
It's one of my wife's guilty pleasures, she couldn't care less about cars,
thinks the team of presenters are complete knobs,
but laughs her self stupid at their weekly antics..

It's just the kind of easy viewing tripe she enjoys to wind down to
after a hard weeks work as an exhaustingly overstressed professional public servant ????

A serious concern is that the Unions and progressive political activists
don't shoot themselves in the foot overreacting to his obnoxious public provocation.
They are in danger of playing into the hands of right wing media ever ready, vigile and eager for any 'stage managed' excuse
to further discredit public sector defenders in any ploy to manipulate mass public opinion.

At the very least we can hope that the mass of public sector 'Top Gear' fans demonstrate their contempt for Clarksons stupidity
by not purchasing any more of his vapid xmas tie-in product
defiantly hitting the toxic fool in his big fat overstuffed wallet....

No.

Just better than the tacit acceptance of doing nothing.

The Beeb will respond. Eventually.

Not in our time, but theirs. And the protesters will not be thanked or acknowldged if there's a sea-change at the Beeb and they improve the standard of staff.

Here is the responce i got from the BBC:
Dear Audience Member,

Thank you for contacting us about The One Show.

As has now been widely reported, we have had many complaints about a number of Jeremy Clarkson's comments on the show.

The One Show is a live topical programme which often reflects the day's talking points. Usually we get it right, but on this occasion we feel the item wasn't perfectly judged. The presenters apologised at the end of the programme to viewers who were offended by his comments and the BBC and Jeremy would like to apologise for any offence caused. Jeremy has said: "I didn't for a moment intend these remarks to be taken seriously – as I believe is clear if they're seen in context. If the BBC and I have caused any offence, I'm quite happy to apologise for it alongside them."

We have now published this response publicly on our complaints website, reported the feedback widely across the BBC and discussed the matter with the production team. We are sorry that you were offended and fully acknowledge your complaint about this. The reaction we receive does inform our editorial discussions and we do value it. We need to ensure we use your licence fee as efficiently as possible in replying to everyone who has complained and so this response is being sent to everyone who has contacted us about it.

You can read further information at www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/content/handle-complaint/#faqs about the complaints process and how we respond to issues raised in the feedback we receive.

Thank you for contacting us.

Chongo is willing to fight him and pulverize him "real good" if the money is good, and I take it that that will not be a problem. It has to be promoted properly to make the most of it, though. I'm thinking we could bill it as "The Sock-Up in Soho" or something along that line. Anyone else got any good ideas for that?

Thinking about it...a LOT of perfectly reasonable people are irritated by noisy motorbikes, caravans/trailers, roadworks that last too long, jetskis, men with beards, political correctness, global warming fanatics, etc. I absolutely can't abide men with beards!!! I think they should all be defenestrated, shot with spitballs, and hung upsidedown over active volcanic calderas! I have no idea about Nuneaton. Is it a convent or something?

He isn't posh. Bloody Hell, he comes from Doncaster!

I come from Nuneaton, I have a beard, and I once owned a Marina. I also have an irreverent sense of humour, so I am amused rather than outraged by J.C., so according to Big Al, I must be among the less intellectually gifted. Sad.

Jeremy Clarkson is a columnist for a broadsheet newspaper. He is a programme presenter for the most prestigious broadcasting service in the world.

Theres jolly irreverence and sly unconventional humour, and then there's Jeremy Clarkson.

This is a man who seriously believes that global warming doesn't matter. He believes that because he is posh, he can abuse someone like John Prescott - a politician dependant on the public vote - for no better reason than Prescott's fat and he is Labour politician.

Clarkson abuses his power, and influences lots of other people to believe that global warming doesn't matter and that its allright to be as rude as you feel like to overweight people.

In short Clarkson's values are those of a complete turd, and everyday you can see his influence on the less intellectually gifted amongst the mudcatters.

Yes I take him seriously. I never watch him. But I know the bastards there - because I see and hear his influence all around me.

Let Clarkson exercise his sparkling wit on the new Ford Focus or whatever. Its what he's been entrusted with. Let him stick to the job in hand.

I'd never heard of Jeremy Clarkson before reading this thread, but I suggest that he and Chongo Chimp battle each other in a "steel cage" match to boost the ratings of the BBC and raise the general standards of UK public affairs broadcasting. It could be staged at the Royal Albert Hall for maximum effect, ticket prices starting at a prestigious $3,000 apiece (or the equivalent in Pounds Sterling).

Chongo says that he is willing to do it for a mere 30% share of the ticket sales. "I'll rip his head off," he said cheerfully.

Anyone who takes J Clarkson seriously should be taken outside and shot!

I find him delightfully non-PC in a world full of jobsworths that live in fear of saying what they really think and upsetting someone.
