Wow, they grow up so very fast! My youngest daughter Ciara, a sophomore at Aquinas College here in Michigan, has been accepted for the study abroad program. She will be leaving on January 9 for a semester at Tully Cross in Galway. We are very excited for her. My band held a benefit concert last night to help with the costs and several other musicians came out. It was a wonderful gathering of the local Irish American community. These folks watched Ciara grow up. Ciara danced for them during the reel sets.

So, my Irish friends, tell me what she should experience while she is there.

All the best,

Mick

Tully Cross is on the back of beyond isn't it?   I am sure she'll have a great time but it's a long way from anything.

A walk up the Diamond Mountain and enjoy the view would present a few hours well spent I suppose.

I remember a video of a very young Ciara dancing below the stage where Dad was performing. Must have been ten years ago.
No advice but ENJOY!!!!

Got some shirt tail relatives over there; I think one's at UC Galway. Might be able to give her some pointers if she'd like.

Ach, Micker, give her all our best for a fine adventure. What a treat!! Tell her to fend off the lads smartly, though. :D

How exciting, Mick! What will Ciara be doing in Tully Cross?

She'll be that close to the Atlantic she'll be able to wave to you...

It is, innit, Spaw? Noreen, she will be doing a semester there. I haven't seen the classes yet but I understand it is long on Irish history and culture. I also understand that the kids will be teaching assistants in local schools. They also do a number of trips around Ireland. She is very excited to be going.

She'll have to learn to drive all over again. You realize that, right?

Pretty remote but beautiful area. Last time I was nearby (Letterfrack) was a little over a year ago when another American wandered in from the Atlantic - a Little Blue Heron. This was the first of the species ever to reach mainland Europe and caused a great flutter among Irish and British birdwatchers. It almost escaped detection because, in spite of its name, it wasn't little, definitely wasn't blue and, to Irish eyes, looked much more like an egret than a heron! Basically, it was an immature bird that got "washing-machined" across the Atlantic in a storm.

When is she going? I'm sure she'll be well looked after and the locals will point her towards any music or other activities of interest.

Regards

p.s. PM to follow.

My mother was from Galway, nice county, Clifden was once a beautiful town, not anymore. Spent many happy summers there as a child. Borders with Mayo, now that it is beautiful, Westport,Newport, Mulranny and Achill.

Sadly Galway is now every bit as bad as Dublin and Limerick when it comes to drug-related crimes.

My father's grandparents were from Galway. I went there in 2000 - what a beautiful place (didn't see any hint of crime) - what a wonderful opportunity for her!

best wishes

freda

That's so exciting Mick, and well done Ciara!

Mick I can barely imagine her all grown up, having met her but once at a Toronto mudgathering. I mostly remember her sparkling energy and how articulate she was. Time sure does fly...

Thanks, Beebs (only Spawzer and I can call you that!). You too, Jack.

Val Crowhugger, she has grown into a spectacular young woman. Her road has not been an easy one, but she has responded in a wonderful way. To say I am very proud is understatement at its best. Actually I have three daughters and I am exceedingly proud of them all. I am a lucky fella to have three daughters that each, in their own way, will leave this earth better for their having been here.

It has been too long since we have shared music, Crowhugger. I hope we meet when next I am in Toronto.

All the best,

Mick

Glad to hear the concert went well, Mick. Sure would love to have been there! Seems quite a few of us far-flung folk have had a chance to meet your young lassie. I've got a great picture of her holding our Morgan when he was just a baby when you all drove clear across the Rockies to see us! I remember calling Night Owl on my very first cell phone so she could listen to you serenade us all in the restaurant in New Castle.

Please pass on my congrats and best wishes for a wonderful semester to a remarkable young woman. She, like her Da, has learned from some of life's toughest challenges and is the stronger for it. Good going, Ciara!

luvyakat

P.S. Did you get enough funds? I'm sure some of us could chip in; small bits add up.:-)

Tully Cross has a pub named the Anglers Rest, the landlord was (3 years ago) Patrick Salmon and it is where the Renvyle Celidh Band are known to frequent from time to time. Tully is a very quiet place, but Letterfrack (about a mile away) I think has some lively sessions. A little distance away is Cleggan, the Saturday night session in Newmans is led by the landlord, Ritchie, and I've has some wonderful nights in there, definitely worth the effort to get out there and back. I'll be in Cleggan late April all being well with some fellow musicians and singers and no doubt will call into the Anglers Rest whilst over there.

Hope she has a great time.

Kat, the concert was very successful, and far exceeded expectations. Thanks for the thought though. I would prefer to save Mudcat "chipping in" for when Max needs upgrades/repairs to equipment. Right nice of you to think of it though.

Mick
