Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: Jack Campin Date: 10 Jan 12 - 10:01 AM They spoke Italian, Greek and Serbo-Croat in Sydney when I lived there. And the occasional conversation in Tok Pisin in my house. |

Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: Jim Dixon Date: 10 Jan 12 - 02:50 PM Hmm. I wonder how English came to be the language of Australia in the first place? |
Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: JennieG Date: 10 Jan 12 - 03:43 PM I suspect this is apocryphal....I have heard the same story told about different situations. Cheers JennieG |

Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: GUEST,999 Date: 11 Jan 12 - 12:44 AM Snopes says someone's full of it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: LadyJean Date: 11 Jan 12 - 12:50 AM When one of my fellow Americans complains about the use of Spanish in this country, I tell them to count their blessings. My grandparents, growing up at the turn of the last century, had to learn German. Students who applied to the University of Cincinnatti, where my mother's parents met, had to pass a German exam. (Grandma was fluent. Grandaddy cheated.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: Tangledwood Date: 11 Jan 12 - 03:46 AM If that was genuine the person recording it would be out of a job the next day. Thirty years ago I lived in a mining town with a population of 3000. Amongst people I knew well enough to call be name there were twenty one nationalities. Racially, everybody got on well except the Yugoslavs who fought amongst themselves, Serb/Croat. |

Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: Bonzo3legs Date: 11 Jan 12 - 05:11 AM It's on youtube - so have a laugh!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pwghabw4N80 |
Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: Mr Happy Date: 11 Jan 12 - 07:16 AM ' so have a laugh!!' At what, the spelling? 'This is an actual messege..' |
Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 11 Jan 12 - 08:06 AM It's not an Australian voice, the Australian school year is arranged in terms, not semesters & we spell' realise' in the English-Australian way, not using the American 'realize.' Mudcat's spellchecker underlined realise but was happy with realize. As 999 posted above - Snopes said it's an old myth. so does Hoax Slayer Maroochydore High School is a real school, but it does not, nor did it ever have an answering machine message like the one described in the email. The "School Answering Machine" message outlined in the email is a long running joke that has been falsely associated with a number of schools in several countries. sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: Will Fly Date: 11 Jan 12 - 10:05 AM Yes - ridiculing PC for what it is!!! And what exactly is the PC to which you're referring? |
Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Jan 12 - 10:14 AM Sandra: There is no "Mudcat's spellchecker." The underlining you are seeing was put there by your browser. You can probably change it to make it prefer either British or American spelling. I use Google Chrome. In Google Chrome, right-click on a text box. In the menu that comes up, click on "Spell-checker options." Then you can select either "English (United States)" or "English (United Kingdom)." |

Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: Paul Burke Date: 11 Jan 12 - 01:51 PM Bonkers has been caught lying before, and refused to back down or apologise when exposed. He'll try to brazen it out again. And every commebny he makes is laden with spite. It would be a kindness to put him out of his misery. |
Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: Jack the Sailor Date: 11 Jan 12 - 02:45 PM He does not have to lie in this case. As long as he thought that it was real he is in the clear. |

Subject: RE: BS: Australian school answerphone message From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 11 Jan 12 - 05:13 PM Jim - thanks for the info, I forgot my browser (Firefox) lost the Au. spellchecker after the last upgrade as it was not compatible. Must do something about it sometime soon |
