This is a song written by Sylvia Fricker Tyson and recorded by her with Ian:
"Give It To The World"

I transcribed the lyrics as well as I could, and I'm pretty confident about these, but there are a couple words in the last verse that I can't quite make out. It's a rather generic sort of song but I'd like to have the complete lyrics, if anyone happens to know them.

Thanks,
Genie

GIVE IT TO THE WORLD
(Sylvia Fricker Tyson)

Don't keep your good thing deep inside,
go out and give it to the world.
Show that your heart is open wide,
go out and give it to the world.

Chorus:
Give it to the world, give it to the world.
If you've got something good, give it to the world.

If you've got love that's sweet and kind,
go out and give it to the world.
Tell everbody what's on your mind.
Go out and give it to the world.

(Chorus)

If you've got something from your soul, go and (speak?),*
Go out and give it to the world.
Show everybody what you have _______.*
Go out and give it to the world.

* In the video it almost sounds/looks like Sylvia is singing "... go and pee," but I rather doubt that. I'd think the mystery word was "peace," but she clearly sings "go and ____," so that makes no sense.   It might be "go and speak," but I can't tell.
And the last word in the verse sounds like "gained" or something else that doesn't rhyme with "peace" or "see" or "speak," so I can't figure it out.

Thanks for this. Heard it first from Donal Leace. But it is nice to hear "the originals," too.

You're welcome, Saul.

Can you make out the missing words, from watching and listening to the video?

Genie, I've listened to the clip several times. No luck so far. I'll give it another go when I'm alert.

Genie, it's more than I can pay right now, but I see the cd available on eBay and Amazon, among others. The sample on Amazon is much slower and has clearer lyrics than the youtube recording, but doesn't include the third verse.

Sorry- I should have said that the song "Give It to the World" is found on the cd "Beginning of the End" by Ian & Sylvia (CD, Nov-1996, Bear Family Records.) That album is available online as downloads and as a cd.

Thing is, if I can't understand some of the lyrics in the last verse when I hear Sylvia sing them, even when I have a close-up of her face while she's singing those lines, would I be any more likely to understand those two words on an audio recording, where I couldn't watch her lips as she sang?

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

(I could try contacting Sylvia via her website, maybe.)

I would go ahead and contact Sylvia, Genie. It might tickle her to know we're puzzling over a recording from so long ago.

"...would I be any more likely to understand
those two words on an audio recording, where
I couldn't watch her lips as she sang?"

As for the audio recording suggestion, it's a different recording session; a much clearer, slower version. I suspect we'd understand it in a trice! Sorry I can't help more.

You may be right about the slower recording, maeve. But I had no trouble whatsoever understanding Sylvia's lyrics when watching the YouTube of her live TV performance of the song with Ian - except for those two words.   So I don't think the overall audio quality was the issue at all.   If she sometimes drops her "s's" or other final consonants, she might also do that on the recorded version.

I think I'll try contacting her.

Oh yes- since saulgoldie mentioned Donal Leace singing "Give It to the World", I looked it up online (rather a charming two-song segment, by the way.) It's very similar, but not quite the same. I wonder if you can work out Sylvia's original version with its help, though?

Mr. Leace sings,
*************
(Donal Leace singing "Give It to the World" A digital archive of C-SPAN video PROGRAM SEGMENT Jan 14, 2011 Donal Leace, Singer and Songwriter)

00:09:55(music)

Don't keep your good things locked inside you
Go out and give it to the world.
Show everybody your heart is open wide.
Go out and give it to the world.

Chorus: Give it to the world, give it to the world.
If you've got something and it's good, and it's good,
Go out and give it to the world.

If you've got nothing but a song to sing,
Sing it for the world.
Think of all the pleasure your song might bring
If you go out and you sing it for the world.

Chorus:Give it to the world, give it to the world,
If you've got something and it's good, and it's good,
Go out, give it to the world.

(spoken 'Listen to me now:')

If you have learned something from your sorrow, from your pain,
Go out, share it with the world.
Brothers, tell your sisters, tell everything you have gained.
Go out, share it with the world.

Give it to the world, give it to the world,
If you've got something and it's good, and it's good,
Go out, give it to the world.

(spoken: 'Here's your part:')

Give it to the world, come on give it to the world,
If you've got something and it's good, and it's good,
Go out, give it to the world.
*****************

Does that help?

Maeve

Genie- Looks like Sylvia's third verse is:

If you've learned something from your sorrow, and pain,
Go out, share it with the world.
Tell everybody what you have gained.
Go out, give it with the world.

So if that's an accurate understanding, SFT's lyrics are:
***********************************

GIVE IT TO THE WORLD
(Sylvia Fricker Tyson)

1. Don't keep your good thing deep inside.
Go out and give it to the world.
Show that your heart is open wide.
Go out and give it to the world.

CHORUS: Give it to the world; give it to the world.
If you've got something good, give it to the world.

2. If you've got love that's sweet and kind,
Go out and give it to the world.
Tell everybody what's on your mind.
Go out and give it to the world. CHORUS

3. If you've learned something from your sorrow and pain,
Go out, give it to the world.
Tell everybody what you have gained.
Go out, give it to the world. CHORUS

*************

I'll be interested to hear what you learn from the songwriter herself.

Thanks so much, maeve (and Saul).

The line I was hearing as "If you've got something from your soul, go and [pee?]
is actually
"If you've got something from your sorrow and pain."

Watching and listening to Sylvia sing it, I'm pretty sure she's singing "got," not "learned," but either one would make sense.   The 3rd line of that verse is just what it sounds like - "Show everybody what you have gained." But "gained" didn't seem to rhyme with the way she pronounced "pain." (It sounds more like "peen.") That's what threw me off.

So now we have the complete lyrics, both to Sylvia's original and to Donal Leace's modified version.    If I ever do the song I might include that verse along with Sylvia's three.

Thanks so much.

Genie

You're welcome. It's been fun and fruitful.

And I'm glad Sylvia didn't actually sing "If you've got something from your soul, go and pee." ; )

(I really should put that in one of the "mondegreen" threads, come to think of it.)

The lost line is:

If you've learned something from your sorrow and pain,
Tell everybody what you have gained.

I have one of the few DJ Promotional copies. It was a very limited release on 45 rpm. I heard Sylvia at a resort in Northern Minnesota many years ago and told her I had the record. She said, "My God, I didn't even know they released that!"

I am sorry the song didn't do better. It suited their particular blend of vocal harmony and power.
