I supposedly have a free ticket on British Airways from their Visa card...except I think they charge you $500 to get off the plane...oh well. But I would be going straight to Dingle and staying there...anything I should know about? Anyone going to be there and want to say when? mg

Well, Dingle is not a million miles from Ballydehob, West Cork, where the Fastnet Maritime & Folk Festival is on 15-17 June - run by mudcatter Good Soldier Schweik (Dick Miles), with ourselves among the guests. Depends how mobile you'll be while you're in Dingle (and when your 'free' ticket is valid).

Sure you'll have a great time wherever.

Don't expect too much from Dingle. It is an overcrowded, dirty tourist trap. What once used to be a delightful little town has turned into a bloody nightmare of a place. Visit by all means, but don't build up your hopes. I first went there in 1986 and it was lovely. Sadly, it is not the same place. The only good thing now about Dingle is the road into Slea Head – which IS worth a visit!

Dingle is a great place to visit, I've never been in the summer, I suspect there might be too many tourists for my tastes but without tourists it would be a very different place. Flaghertys Bar is a great place for music and take a trip over the Connor Pass, the view from the top is brilliant. Murphys Bar over at Brandon is one of my favourite places ever and Murphys at Ballyferriter is well worth a visit. Overall the Dingle peninsula is a microcosm of everything that is good in Ireland, people, scenery, pubs, antiquities etc etc

Hi Raggytash, I was talking about the town - the peninsular is spectacular and one of my favourite places in the world, from the beehive huts to the South Pole in Annescul, Killorglin to Inch, its all wonderful, except Dingle Town. The planners need a good talking to.

I have been there once before and loved it...anyway, my ancestors are from there and built the grand grocery store there..they are actually from Maum an Orig?? which I think is between Dunquin and Ballyferriter...I'll know a bit more next time I go. mg

We are agreed Silas, however Town Planning possibly wasn't high on the agenda when Dingle town was "planned"

Yes, but putting a fun fair on the only decent car park, and not introducing a workable one way system, and allowing pubs to blast out pop music from outside speakers etc there is no excuse for this!

Shane has long claimed that his familial forbears ("the fambly") all came from Dingle, but I have it on good authority that they really came from Dangle...a place which has since remained utterly obscure.

I love the Dingle peninsula and have good memories of the town. It used to have a reputation as the center of the Gaeltacht, the heart of the living Irish language. The B&B at Slea Head is a great place to stay and offers you beautiful views of Great Blasket Island, about which I wrote this song, by the way.
I remember live traditional Irish music in the pubs in Dingle and also in Dunquin, whose dock looks like something out of Middle Earth.
Ah, I truly envy you! Read Peg Sayers' book and /or Robin Flowers' The Western Isle before you go to get a flavor of the place. Magic!

I'll be there with a few friends in early August for a week - not sure where we'll be staying yet but somewhere in Corca Dhubhne anyway, not Dingle town.
