I am a huge DVR fan. My favorites are:

"Inside Dave Van Ronk" - This is a compilation of two albums from the early 60's - has both blues and folk. 25 songs including Cocaine Blues, You've Been a Good Old Wagon, He Was a Friend of Mine, House Carpenter, Brian O'Lynne, Fair and Tender Ladies, etc.

"Sunday Street" - Just plain one of my favorites.

"Somebody Else, Not Me" - I think they got the name wrong on the CD Cover - Someone Else, Not Me. The CD is worth the price of this song, but has plenty of others as well.

"Going Back to Brooklyn" - Check out Garden State Stomp. After I heard him perform this song, someone yelled out "What Exit" - great NJ humor.

I have every vinyl, tape, and CD I have been able to find. Let me know if you have any questions about any other DVR material.

Hey dwd........Great advice...If I were to pick only one, it would be the compilation set...I had that stuff on vinyl....the only thing you miss out on is "watching" DVR perform, which was a gas in itself!!!

...and dwd, sorry you missed your N.C. trip. We need to meet on the road on one of your sojourns...do you go I-77?

I reckon Dave Van Ronk 'The Folkways Years 1959-61 Smithsonian/Folkways CD SF 40041 is essential to any Van Ronk collection. The compilation is by Van Ronk himself and Kip Lornell. It has an excellent insert with reflections by Van Ronk, an essay by Lornell and extensive notes on the songs. I love his rendition of Bessie Smith's 'Black Mountain Blues'.

Does anyone have any solid back/ground knowledge of the Supposed Jugband lp from about 1958 with Van Ronk & Sam Charters? I think it's on Lyrichord (this is NOT the 64 Mercury Jugstompers lp) Does this lp exist (the lyrichord one) has anyone seen it? Does anyone have a copy??????

I have a CD called "Dave Van Ronk: Blues Collection" which seems to be a couple of older shows. He does songs like "Jesus Met the Woman at the Well," "Statesboro Blues" and "Babe, Let Me Lay it On You," which is the same music as "Babe, Let me Follow You Down." I saw him up in NY state early this year. I really enjoyed his show. He's an excellent guitar player and a great entertainer. Does anyone have any info on DVR NY/NJ-Area gigs?

I have a DVR LP called Dave Van Ronk and the Ragtime Jug Stompers. I can't dig it out to see if Sam Charters is on it. Lonesome Dave, it is not part of the 'essential' DVR collection, though it is a nice album, DVR does not dominate it, it truly is a group effort.

There is a Dave Van Ronk Concert Video, available from Stefan Grossman, which I was privileged to see last week (borrowed from Rick Fielding). Best thing on it was his acappella version of Joni Mitchell's "Song To A Seagull".

I'm also a big Dave Van Ronk fan.

My favorite album is "In the Tradition", with the Red Onion Jazz Band. Half the tracks are just him; half are him with the band. They're all great.

I play "The St Louis Tickle" and "Green Rocky Road", and I'm going to learn more, from his video, when I get around to it.

I've been looking for TAB to "Bad Dream Blues" for a long, long time. Does anybody have that song? Does anybody want to transcribe it?

The 6 tape audio lession from Stefan Grossman's Guitar workshop are a wonderfully complete set of ramblings by DVR. Oh, and you get to learn about 20 aongs note by note, fret by fret, string by string, along the way.

We have it and enjoy it. It is a greatest hits compilation (although it is missing quite a number of songs I would have included). Here now is the however: Since Dave has played in so many different kinds of genres, the juxtaposition of some of the songs can be ear-perturbing, and of all the ways to hear Dave Van Ronk, the way I prefer is just Dave and a guitar. If there was more of just that, I would enjoy the CD more.

Art, it has been reissued on CD under the title 'Inside Dave Van Ronk' which has 2 LPs on a single CD: 'Folksinger'/'Inside'. The reference is Fantasy FCD 24710-2. I bought mine several years ago, so I don't know whether it's still available. Great stuff, particularly his version of 'Poor Lazarus'.

I own "To All My Friends In Far-Fung Places" a two-CD set with 28 songs. I think it offers a wide swath of his talent. When I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Turning Point in Piermont, NY and we spoke of the CD he said I paid "too much." It was a premium for a $100.00 contribution to a local radio station. Well worth the donation, honestly.

Was really surprised to see this thread revived. The guy who does the DVR web page has just released a video on Paul Geremia, which is well worth purchasing. Unfortunately there is no instructional material but there is lots of concert footage. DVR gives a testamonial to Pauls' guitar playing. IMHO Paul Geremia is one of the all time greats and deserves much wider attention.

I revived this thread. It was due time to talk about him again, and I was looking for that out of print DVR book.

I wholeheartedly agree, about Paul Geremia. He is one of the GREATS. I drove all the way up to Saratoga to see him, Xmas 1998, and I've seen him at the Bottom Line since. I asked him if he would do a tutorial video for Stefan Grossman, but he didn't want to talk about it. Someone should start a Paul Geremia thread and revive it once in awhile, like this DVR thread.

From what I can tell, Dave's version differs from Booker's. Also, I realized that there were tab books, but I happen to be broke for the time being...hence the asking for them on here.
