From: Ed T

She has still got it, and at 71! And, it was 50 years ago, though it is still fresh in voyeuristic years, anyway.

What about you?

Do you still turn heads at the beach as you stroll by in the Speedo you wore as a youth, or in the bikini you had as a teen?

Raquel Welch is as beautiful today as when she emerged from the sea in 'mankind's first bikini' almost 50 years ago

Major human milestone-Almost 50 years ago

I do when I wear the two-piece bikini, Ed. (BTW, there WERE no Speedos when I was a kid.)

Dan, you may have just been saved by a senior moment!

She is still lovely, but artificially so, imo. I'm guessing more than a few facelifts and the hair does not suit. If find myself thinking how much more lovely she might look if she looked a youthful 70 due to natural aging and taking care of herself rather than looking like a 50 something just slightly "off" somehow.

Spot on, Janie.....the current Raquel looks just a wee bit artificial, doesn't she? Almost as though she has been embalmed. And I bet that tight corset isn't comfortable either.

And before you blokes say it, I'm not just being a catty female.....she was indeed gorgeous as a young woman but now looks like someone who is desperately trying to cling on to the past. We all have to get older eventually, and no amount of surgery and elastic will halt that.

Cheers

I've always been fascinated by people who are extremely attractive (male or female) and yet aren't traditionally beautiful or sexy. They just have that extra something which warms you. (On the other hand, we had an 'Adonis' colleague, a young male teacher who could have been a model, but he was boring, arrogant and ghastly!) Often when young, I've desperately fancied a man who could have been described as fairly ugly, but who just melted my heart. It's obviously not about looks, but personality and character, cute ways and winsomeness! (Therefore age doesn't come into it at all. Hurrah!)

Eliza... definitely. For me, it's always been the smile and the twinkle in the eyes. Gotta have both on accounta a smile without that twinkle is just a fake smile. "Beautiful" and "built" and such don't turn me on. After the smile, it's intelligence, warmth, compassion, elan and so on. Of course, as I age, it becomes moreso every day.

I've been thinking about this during the night, and remembering folk who attracted me a lot. They fell into two groups, I reckon. 1) Those who had a great kindness for others in them 2) Those who had an interesting personality, eg intelligent, wise, quirky or very funny or with fascinating hobbies etc. Not one from among all the people I have known over many decades was 'handsome' or 'beautiful' in the media sense. I don't feel that anyone old, arthritic, bald, fat, wrinkled or anything else is any less attractive, why should they be? They can be deliciously lovable, and one can long to be with them because they make one feel good!

Is htere a double standard at play?

Is it worse that RW uses modern techniques to look better, than women who also do it- but, don't look as good as she does after? Let's say any star/celebrity, such as Barbara Walters, Cher,Stephhen Tyler, for example (or almost all the other movie/television celebrities and singers).

Should women who can afford it, not do things, like fix their teeth, or s dye their hair, if they can look better, and feel better about themselves as they age? What's the difference if they also remove a few age wrinkles on their face or elsewhere?

Not a thing wrong with it, Ed. I just don't think she looks as beautiful as she might if she also looked real. Matter of personal opinion/taste, I expect. To me, she looks somewhat incongruous. Obviously not a beautiful 50ish woman, but a 70ish woman artificially trying to look like a 50ish woman.

To me, Katharine Hepburn, probably much older at the time of the photo than Raquel, looks much more beautiful and definitely still had "it."

I don't know Janie. It is hard to compare one persons natural aging against's anothers. As far as looks goes, I suspect some folks age well, while others not so well, lifestyles and genetics I suspect.

Who knows that RW would have aged well naturally, as the example you provided?

Here is a recent one of Barbare Walters (below). It is also important that the person getting the work done feels better about themselves, I suspect.Barbara

I realize she has had work done-but I feel she looks quite nice now. Some plastic surgery work is a disaster. This may be partially due to the praticioner, and partly due to the demands of the person paying?

Plastic surgery is a personal choice, but for many actors, performers, celebrities, etc. maintaining one's looks goes with the territory and is for all intents and purposes an important aspect of their job. Personal trainers, nips and tucks, highly paid hair stylists and makeup experts are all part of that - their looks are part of their stock and trade. Some are more successful than others. Raquel Welch looks good - there have been some plastic surgery messes - Melanie Griffith comes to mind.

Maybe not so, (or, intentially so) Janie.
But, maybe it is so?

To me it is a total package, looks is only one part of the whole picture.

Aging and how people deal with it is a personal matter that individuals deal with differently, depending on their tastes and circumstances. I don't sit in judgement of those who take different paths. But, I feel it is important to look at it objectively.

I recall a few years ago some middle aged women at work were mocking a man who dyed his hair (behind his back, of course). I asked how many of them did the same. They replied, "well, that's different". When I asked why, the only answer they could come up with is "because, mosyt women do it, while few medn do". It seemed like an odd reply to me.

We often see those at one end of societies "Beauty Scale" as being discriminate against because of their looks, without considering those at the other end also face a form of similar discrimination, (though likely not as severe)-especially as they age.

My use of the term "discriminated against" is on the harsh side. I guess I meant something more on the mild end of "mocked, or belittled".

I think the double standard I'm perceiving here is that when we say "Raquel Welch looks good", it is also saying that most other women her age don't look good. I don't know if she still "has it" in other, more important (to me) ways, since I haven't had a chance to talk to her. But it is clear that all those other women who don't still look good didn't have a chance to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on looking good.

So, yes, RW looks good, if you think a 70 year old looking like an attractive 50 year old looks good. I just can't think it is much to her credit, however. Mind you, I don't have anything against plastic surgery; I think everyone should do whatever is right for them in that regard. I just don't think people who buy their good looks deserve much credit for having them. RW deserves credit for picking a really good surgeon -- compared to some of the other train wrecks walking around, she looks quite natural. Has anyone seen Christine Baranski lately?

Amazing what face lifts and collagen can deceive.

True beauty has nothing to do with outside appearances.

The rest is manufactured.

Remember that the Stepford Wives were created to be beautiful.

"" just don't think people who buy their good looks deserve much credit for having them""

Should people who have good looks be given credit for having them, regardless of how they got them, as atated above? If so, should those with natural beauty(which I suspect RW was seen as being in that group in her earlier life) be given that credit. Or, should the mother and father should be given the real credit for sharing the genetic looks with them? I suspect going down that roads leads to a dead end).

I like people to at least be clean and odour-free. I was in the library the other day, and a quite young, attractive-looking chap sat at a computer. He absolutely stank, it made my eyes water. The whole library stank in fact, the librarian surreptitiously sprayed an aerosol behind her counter. No matter what a person actually looks like, I do rather prefer them to smell reasonably sweet!

Ed T,
I'm not saying anything at all about who gets credit for having good looks in general. I'm just saying that we don't have any idea if RW still has it any more than any other 71 year old. If you are defining "still has it" as being physically attractive to many men, using bought-and-paid-for beauty as a standard is maybe not the best example. When I look at RW, I just find myself wondering if she would have been attractive without the surgery. I'm happy with the fact that I find lots of non-altered 70 year old women attractive. Also, as I get older myself, I wish that people were more willing see older people who look their ages as attractive. I'm proud of my years and don't want to look 20 years younger than I am in order for people to think I "still have it".

Well, I guess if your entire career was (mostly) based on "looking good", I suspect RW does as the majority of other Celeb's do,and have done for some time (singers, talk hosts, movie and TV folks, and even politicians) and tries to extend what made her a successful Celeb. So, on that front, she still "looks good" in front of the camera, as does 64 year (well worked over) singer Stephen Tyler, for example.

We don' really know what type of work she had done, or did not have done, now do we? At least I don't.

Are you really sure that the "non-altered 70 year old women" you see are completely unaltered, as yoou contend? How so?

When it comes to her views on aging,I believe she was open in her book, "Beyond the Cleavage. I believe she was one of the first women Celebs of her type who went out of hger way to announce she was 40, at the time considered "old aged" for a "pin up" model.

From what I have read, RW is also a very intelligent. That is interesting to me. BTY, I never considered her physical attributes to attractive to me-not my cup of tea. But, I do understand why many others see it differently.
