Here are some pointers...

You do not need to call us Plastic Paddies for any reason whatsoever. It is a very rude term and meant to insult.

You do not need to say that is not what they sing in Ireland. I personally don't care what they sing in Ireland...it is a day that developed its own traditions in USA. I do not tell people on Sytende Mai what they sing or don't sing in Norway. On Columbus day I do not tell Italian Americans what they do or don't sing in Italy.

You do not need to sneer at people who want certain songs on St. Patrick's Day, such as Kerry Dancers, Irish Eyes etc..in general we sing most of these songs once a year and the once is coming up.

If it offends your sensibilities that they would ask for Danny Boy etc. just consider playing somewhere else on St. Patrick's Day.

A lot of fun and music has been killed..not died a natural death which would be expected. mg

If you're singing a song about murdering the English that you believe in, then I probably won't be polite. If on the other hand, it's like Boxing Day to me then no complaints.

Also, I'm digging out Sick Note whether the Open Mic lot want it or not.

So don't sing "Old Orange Flute", "Lillibularoo", "Boyne Water," or other Orange songs.   And please, don't' bring 800+ years of disputation to the US -- we've got enough, it being an election year.

Personally I sing "Ach, du Lieber Augustine." But then I'm of German descent. I don't sing the "Horst Weisel Lieder," but I will sing "Die Gedanken sind frei."

I personally couldn't give a rat's ass about it. I tend not to venture out on Saint Patrick's day. It holds no meaning for me anymore.

I do a little bit...have some plans this year...it used to be the best day of the year..I will not make excuses for fights, rowdiness, vomiting in the streets etc. if that occurs..I have personally never seen it...but I will defend the rights of people to engage in harmless entertainment, wear silly hats, sing unsophisticated songs, eat green Jello etc. And I think it is really wrong and chauvinistic to look down on people who are not hurting anyone in their traditional ways (in USA) of enjoying a holiday, that has greater meaning than we probably realize. mg

I took it as a compliment to be called a plastic paddy or biddy - a compliment to my Irish accent in English, at least!

Also: don't get so drunk you have to be taken care of.

I am reminded slightly of somebody who was about to get too drunk, telling them not to go beyond the pale... and they answered no, no, puke INTO the pail, which I also thought was good mannerly advice.

A lot of conjecture and worse given the initial post. Celebrating one's heritage is fine with me and I have been called down for it so I understand the OP and agree with the basic premise of that post. Nothing more. While I am still sober. >;-)

I will be playing in a St Paddy's Night gig. We won't be doing any sectarian stuff though.

"The Boyne Water"? In Scotland it would usually be heard as the tune for "Parcel of Rogues". I think I have once heard an Orange flute band doing it but have never met anybody who knew any Irish words for it.

"The Old Orange Flute" would fit happily in any gathering. It's a satire on sectarianism, not an assertion of it.
