Female kicker to attend NFL scouting combine

Former soccer player realizes odds are stacked against her

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Lauren Silberman has a scant chance at making the NFL.

Silberman never kicked anything more than a soccer ball in an organized game, and she just started practising long-range field goals.

Even so, the first female kicker scheduled to try out at an NFL regional scouting combine would like to see where her new hobby will take her. In an era where Danica Patrick can contend against men in motor sports, Silberman is about to take a big kick forward for female athletes, even if the odds are clearly stacked against her. The 28-year-old Silberman will kick Sunday at the New York Jets' training facility in Florham Park, N.J.

'I realize that I may not make an NFL team this year,' Silberman told NFL.com. 'But for me, I'm expecting to have fun, to meet really interesting people and hopefully perfect my technique from the other tremendous kickers that will be in attendance.' Her goal for the weekend is a true long shot - perfect 60-yard field goals. Odds are, though, that scouts will want to see her connect on extra points and chip-shot field goals with some consistency before moving on to the heavy kicking. Silberman will compete against more accomplished or polished college kickers, all hoping to prove they have the leg strength and accuracy worthy of earning an invite to an NFL training camp. St. Louis Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein participated in a regional combine last year before he was drafted and morphed into 'Legatron.' Silberman won't be kicking against the best of the sure-footed prospects, but there will be talent there regardless. The regional combines debuted in 2011 and feature players who weren't among the 333 invited to the main combine in Indianapolis. The league is holding these sessions in 10 cities this season, with the most impressive players advancing to a super-regional in April in Dallas. It's sort of the sports version of a TV reality show, where each hit and tackle can wow a scout and move a player on to the next round. Only instead of a recording contract, it's an NFL one.

"Baltimore could seal the game in the 2 minutes."

What did Vince say? The Buffalo "comeback game"?

Here is a quote from me... It ain't over until I collect my money or cry in my beer.

But I DO have my Pats hoody on over my 49s tee so I don't see how the Ravens can lose. Just sayin.

Anyone catch Phil Simms' Iron Man Show? Lots of GREAT stuff but saying Fred Biletnikoff didn't deserve the MVP is totally ludicrous after what Fred did all season and in the Superbowl! Anyone that can smoke FOUR packages of cigarettes DURING the Superbowl and do what Fred did deserves TWO rings... and a smoke ring.

Anyone who reads my football posts knows I have a dim view of Phil anyway... his eyesight is poor and his knowledge of the rules is "dimmer" - at best. I often holler at my TV (yes... I know Phil can't hear me), "WTF did you just say? Are we watchin the same game?"

Pee, beer, chicken wings.... SECOND HALF!

GO PATS!

Finished my beer - can't get Dogfish Head nowadays, so it was a Belgian (Tongerlo Blonde). Now on a Glenrothes single malt. It's nearly midnight here, so I'd better not eat anything (had a water buffalo rib-eye steak earlier). Mike Carlson looks funny in a jacket and tie. I've seen too many games in all codes where the team that scores first goes on to lose. I think the Harbaugh in black will win.

I just wrote another long post and WIN 8 fucked it. It just goes to another screen???

I know who is gonna win. I have every tee except the \ravens so \I have my Niners tee on UNDER my PATS hoody.

\ ???? Why does it do that? Agggghhhhh! I gotta plug inA N OLD KEYBOARD! oH, YEh, things ain't where they used to be with the new keyboard.

Anyway, I have my big ass football slippers on and the wings and sauce re in a decorative plastic serving dish shaped like a football. It was free with the wings and is dishwasher safe... I shall chuck it in the garbage and keep it away from the dishwasher.

Kickoff soon... pee, beer, smokes, remote, VCR taping...

Pro football will last as long as the $ are there. I made the team when I was a lad. Came home with my gear. Mum said, "You take that stuff back." I appealed to Dad. Game over. Glad she did. But I still tune in on the TV. Will it change "overall" the way Mum changed it for me? Could be, but not for a looooong time.

Dan... nothin to do with gettin a jersey. I wouldn't want it if I didn't admire his abilities on the field. That is why I would treasure a jersey. Ben? Yeah, he's good but, not to piss you off, he's not a "Long Bomb" yet even though he has the abilities. Read that book some time. And, especially read Alex Karass's book "Big Guys Don't Cry". I REALLY enjoyed that book. I remember the day I read the last page. I was on a flight home and there was a young lad across the aisle. I asked, "You like football?" Yes! I said, "If yer Mum (next to him, obviously) is okay with this, you take this book and read it. I just finished it and I liked it." She nodded and he started reading it immediately. I enjoyed the book and I enjoyed giving ot to that lad even more so. Odd? No matter... made me feel good.

Seriously, Karass's book is a good read.

The Impending Death Of Pro Football
By Ta-Nehisi Coates

Jan 22 2013, 4:19 PM ET 229

This is major:

Brain scans performed on five former NFL players revealed images of the protein that causes football-related brain damage -- the first time researchers have identified signs of the crippling disease in living players.

Researchers who conducted the pilot study at UCLA described the findings as a significant step toward being able to diagnose the disease known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, in living patients.

"I've been saying that identifying CTE in a living person is the Holy Grail for this disease and for us to be able make advances in treatment," said Dr. Julian Bailes, a Chicago neurosurgeon and one of the study's co-authors. "It's not definitive and there's a lot we still need to discover to help these people, but it's very compelling. It's a new discovery."

I don't know if this will change anything, right now. But telling a player "You have CTE" is a lot different than "You stand some chance of developing it."

There's something more; presumably, if they really learn how to diagnose this, they will be able to say exactly how common it is for football players--and maybe athletes at large--to develop CTE. This is when you start thinking about football and an existential crisis. I don't know what the adults will do. But you tell a parent that their kid has a five percent chance of developing crippling brain damage through playing a sport, and you will see the end of Pop Warner and probably the end of high school football. Colleges would likely follow. (How common are college boxing teams these days?)

After that, I don't know how pro football can stand for long.

I was puttin on me jammies when the phone rang just minutes ago. Buddy asks me if I heard Brady got a $10,000 fine for the spike!!! I said, no! REALLY?... GOOD!!!

He's my fav QB of nearly all time to watch on the field (come on, who can't absolutely love cudly TB or admire Montana or absofuckinglutely respect Fran or... you get the pic) but I was shocked when I saw that spike and I could not believe it wasn't called. I was two feet from the TV in half the amount of seconds and screaming for a flag and I really don't understand how those refs didn't hear my call for a personal foul penalty??? Ahhhh.... yes I live alone... why do you ask?

When I saw the slo-mo replay, I was twice as pissed. But, the guy is my present QB "hero" on accounta he plays for "my" team so I thought, "mistake" and accepted the fact that the refs musta seen it that way too and, well, gee, okaaaaay, I can live with it. Thank goodness for a review in "the BIG booth upstairs". Ten large is fuck all to Brady but it speaks LARGE to fans like me.

In see Elway says SF. May be. But not if the golden boy runs early and hasn't learned to slide a knee yet... Ray and his buddies gonna put a hurt on that lad if he finishes with his head. Seems to me the coaches are not doing their job when that lad runs and thinks he's a back when he does. Am I wrong?

I had to read up on it again as I had forgotten most of the details.

It seems he was in the wrong place at the wrong time but that's no excuse for lying to the police and I REALLY don't get the part about getting rid of the white suit??? Did the others do the same? Lots of questions and conjecture... no answers. But, he didn't buy a knife and the other two did. Why they bought knives is the biggest question of all for me.

Flacco has the strongest arm in the NFL? Okay. And, apparently, the most accurate. Haven't seen much of him up here but what I saw this eve was goooood.

The SB is a tough call but I would put my coin on the Ravens.
