Subject: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day From: ChanteyLass Date: 19 Mar 12 - 04:07 PM It's not as much fun as St. Patrick's Day, but today is St. Joseph's Day. Here in RI, it is often overshadowed by St. Patrick's Day." When I was a young teacher, a school psychologist of Irish descent and Roman Catholic asked "Who was St. Joseph?" I said, "You, know! Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. " "Oh," said she. "I just think of him as Joseph." Here's some information about this day. http://www.planetblacksburg.com/entertainment/acdc-031807-stjoseph.php Have you had a zeppola today? Here's a recipe. http://www.quahog.org/factsfolklore/index.php?id=166 |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day From: SINSULL Date: 20 Mar 12 - 01:31 PM Why is St Joseph's Day celebrated by witches? Can't access the folklore link. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day From: Joe Offer Date: 20 Mar 12 - 01:40 PM I don't know if I should say this publicly because you never know what Spaw will make of it.... My dad says my mom prayed to St. Joseph to find her a man....and she found my dad on a blind date. So, she named her firstborn son after St. Joseph the Matchmaker. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day From: ChanteyLass Date: 20 Mar 12 - 09:52 PM Joe, I love your family story! Sinsull, I never heard anything about St. Joseph's Day being celebrated by witches. Hmm . . . , I wonder what that's all about? |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day From: SINSULL Date: 20 Mar 12 - 10:04 PM A minor reference to it in a trashy novel on witchcraft. Thought someone here might know. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day From: Peter the Squeezer Date: 21 Mar 12 - 07:12 PM I've always felt a bit sorry for poor old Joseph! He's the one left to bring up somebody else's Son. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 21 Mar 12 - 10:46 PM When I read the recipe for zeppola, I knew they would be so delicious that anybody would want to celebrate by eating them, witches and warlocks included. Joe, I don't think that Joseph made matches. He was probably into bigger stuff, like houses and furniture. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day From: GUEST,crazy little woman Date: 21 Mar 12 - 10:48 PM Take a look at one of my favorite paintings - St Joseph the Carpenter by Georges La Tour. http://www.abcgallery.com/L/latour/latour49.html |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day From: GUEST,crazy little woman Date: 22 Mar 12 - 11:30 PM Oh good, Chanteylass! I was feeling sad, thinking not one person wanted to see something beautiful. When I first saw this painting, it was reproduced in an elegant art book. In the book you can see the little Jesus is tired, but he holds the candle peacefully, with no trace of crankiness or irritation. To tell you the truth, I believe few paintings of that era (1600's) catch an expression such as that. I admire La Tour for being able to capture the subtle changes around the eyes which tell us that a child is tired. I'm glad you like the painting. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day From: ChanteyLass Date: 23 Mar 12 - 08:52 PM On my computer screen it is hard to see those details. I wish I could. However, I like the subdued palette of different shades of brown and its contrast to the bright parts lit by the candle, especially the face of Jesus. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day From: GUEST,crazy little woman Date: 23 Mar 12 - 10:31 PM I think La Tour was famous for painting faces in unusual lighting. Another thing delightful in the painting is Jesus' knees. Once I took an airplane flight next to a mother who was holding her two-year old son. I spent a lot of time looking down at his knees as he slept. At the end of the flight, I told the mother, "I've been looking at his cute little knees." She said, "Yes, it's things like that that make you want to keep having children." |
