Subject: BS: Help name our new dog? From: katlaughing Date: 24 Mar 12 - 04:33 PM Our Luna was bored and needed a playmate, so today we went to Pet Smart and met with the Petsamaratins who drive over from Utah, every other weekend to adopt out dogs. They had a ten month old border collie, which looks more like a McNab BC, like our old Merlee. Anyway, she came home with us and she and Luna are getting along great, as are the cats and grandson with her. Looks like a GOOD fit. I told Rog we could consider her an early b-day present to me.:-) Anyway, her previous owners claimed they'd had her since she was two months and only noticed when she was ten months that she was a girl and squatted to pee on their perfect grass, so they turned her in! Idiots! So, her name right now is "Minnie" which none of us like and it doesn't fit her personality, so how about some suggestions? I think it'd be best if it had the same sound at the end as "minnie," but different.:-) She is sweet, fast on her toes, and looked like some kind of so-fast-it-was-a-blur-fish when going after a ball a few minutes ago. She can leap at least five feet, all four feet off the ground and shows the BC intelligence. So put yer thinking caps on and the winner gets a prize to be determined.**bg** Thanks, kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: Bert Date: 24 Mar 12 - 04:56 PM I think you should live with her for a while until the right name suggests itself. Our cat was officially named M&M but after a couple of months his real name became obvious and now he is "Floppy Cat" From what you have said so far "Speedy" might be an option, but give it a few weeks. |

From the suggestion of Sola, we are thinking of going with Soli/Sully or maybe la dulce only pronounce it "dull-see." Can't go with Sylvie due to my dad's widow, Sylvia, not one of my fav. people.:-) Definitely like unusual and, like Bert says, we may have to live with her for awhile before the right one comes up. Keep 'em coming, folks, and thanks! |

Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: gnu Date: 24 Mar 12 - 07:29 PM Dan... "Spaw" One syllable, which is important when naming a non-human, and just seams to be a good name. Kat... "She is sweet, fast on her toes, and looked like some kind of so-fast-it-was-a-blur-fish when going after a ball a few minutes ago. She can leap at least five feet, all four feet off the ground and shows the BC intelligence." Reminds me of Spaw, mentally at least. >;-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: Beer Date: 24 Mar 12 - 08:19 PM How about "Puter", so when she is out and you want to call her you would shout "Come-puter".computer. Or how about "Arf". So when you are calling her you would be shouting ARF!, Arf! arf! I know they are old jokes. Here are a few that sound close to "minnie". Bonnie, Angie, Annie, Brownie and Aggie. I like Bonnie. Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: Bert Date: 24 Mar 12 - 08:21 PM Gnu, the only time old Spaw gets all four feet off the ground is when he's on the job. |
Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: Crowhugger Date: 24 Mar 12 - 08:40 PM Not at all meeting the rhyme criterion but fits with her high jumping: Pogo. Closer to the rhyming thing: Ricochet (Rickie for short) I wouldn't worry too much about making the name rhyme for the sake of the dog. Years back we adopted a 16-month old shepherd-lab mix, named Norman after a horror movie character. Within a day he understood very well that when we said "Rudy" good things happened to him--food, love, walk, fetch. |

Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: GUEST,Hookey Wole Date: 24 Mar 12 - 10:33 PM Then there's my name "Hookey" - sounds good to me. Or, seeing as Borders are notoriously mental {I KNOW, I used to take one for long walks} "Barmy" Or, a tribute to one of England's dearest loved wartime singers "Jessie" Or one of Englands fattest banjulele playing singers "Tessie".... |
Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: gnu Date: 24 Mar 12 - 10:39 PM Sorry about the spelling. I ain't up on my French... well, Acadian French anyway, but... Vien'cit la, Phydeaux. I said SIT LA, m***********! Is that part of it, Beer? I can't recall it, but I heard a joke where that was part of it. There is a guy here who does mostly French venues and he mixes in English words in such a way as the Acadians do in everyday language that would crack you up. He's VERY funny. Dunno why I have never seen this guy on TV... Just For Laughs festival? Then again, I have never seen some other locals on Just For Laughs either and they are surely better than some of the thousands of reruns aired on The Comedy Channel. Money, I guess. |
Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: ChanteyLass Date: 24 Mar 12 - 10:42 PM Well, my first thought was Chantey : P , but after your description I thought Rocky, short for Rocket, because she moves quickly. Now, most people think of Rocky being a man's name, but I think it is also used for women named Raquel, although in that case it may be spelled differently. |
Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: Ebbie Date: 24 Mar 12 - 11:26 PM Well, since Merlin was such a special dog, how about a name for the new babe that honors him and invokes his powers? Like Merrily, or Linnet/Linnie, or Meribeth/Bethy, or ? |
Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: ranger1 Date: 24 Mar 12 - 11:36 PM I like Beer's suggestion of Bonnie. |
Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: katlaughing Date: 25 Mar 12 - 12:33 AM I like Merrily, but I don't think the rest of the family would go for it. Some of the other suggestions are good, some funny, but nothing has struck as "just right," yet. Oh, and she is definitely a McNab like Merlee was..so quiet and right beside you anticipating what's next, but without all of the "barmy" as mentioned above of BCs.:-) That is a fun suggestion...I kind of love it...goes along with Luna getting called Luna-Tik once in awhile, old joke or not.:-) Tilly is in consideration as I've always liked it since taking care of an old lady in a nursing home whose name was Tilly Olguin (Ohl-geen soft "g".) Off to go look up more Scottish names. Thanks, ya'll! We keep referring to her as "the new one" so we have to hurry and come up with one or she'll start being known as the "Newbie!" |
Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: Bert Date: 25 Mar 12 - 02:10 AM Hinny might be a good name for a Border Collie. |
Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: MGM·Lion Date: 25 Mar 12 - 02:13 AM "Hinny" is a NE variant of "Honey", the name I suggested above. I agree it would be appropriate for a border collie. But I still like the suggestion of sweetness inherent in "Honey". ~M~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: Richard Bridge Date: 25 Mar 12 - 07:10 AM Benny is a very dim character in an old TV soap called "Crossroads" - a name ("Bennies") that politically incorrect UK soldiers gave the Falkland Islanders when Argentia last invaded there. In the US Benny is a derogatory term used by year-round residents of the Jersey Shore to describe rude, flashy, loud, tourists from northern New Jersey and New York. Benzedrine is the trade name of the racemic mixture of amphetamine (dl-amphetamine). The drug was often referred to as "bennies" by users and in literature. Cambridge online dictionaries also give "a sudden period of uncontrolled anger; a tantrum" |

No waking us up to go pee or anything and when I got up she was in "Papa's" recliner while Luna had the whole sofa to herself per usual! Still thinking about Dulcie, Shemmy/Chamois (though she is not like a car-polishing cloth! She does shimmer in the light, so Shimmy is what brought us to Shemmy, that & the way she goes after a ball) and a couple of others, including Barmy! We really like more unusual. She is very calm, McNabs really differ from BCs in that. Thanks, ya'll! |

Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Mar 12 - 12:31 PM I second ChanteyLass's suggestion of "Rocket." I was going to first it but I found the suggestion already in play as I read. :) Kat, if you've paid any attention to Cesar Millan, be sure that as you blend this family that YOU are the pack leader. It makes it much easier on the dogs to know who is in charge. My dogs have more than one syllable in their names, and still manage to know that I'm talking to them. I like the idea of having Luna and Rocket - you have a theme there. My dogs have spice/seasoning names. I don't tend to give them people names any more, it confuses people in my life. (Please don't name her "Maggie"). SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: katlaughing Date: 25 Mar 12 - 12:36 PM Naw, she won't be Maggie nor Mimi, as I have friends who carry those names.**bg** Luna's full name is StellaLuna after a children's book of the same name, about a bat, which does not mean she is bat-like...she has starry colouring on a silver-grey "sky" and we love saying "LOOO-nah" to her. As an homage to Art Thieme from whom I learned the song, Shake Shugaree, we are trying out Shoo-gah-ree with Shoog for short. So far she and the kid like it! whaddaya all think? |

I also like the Scottish name "Esme" which is short for Esteem. The one show I heard it used in pronounced it "ez-mee." Sorry if I sounded a bit tetchy about McNabs. Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: GUEST,kendall Date: 26 Mar 12 - 07:22 AM Any dog can be destructive if not trained to be alone for a period of time. Training them for that is so simple. All the dog needs to know is that you will come back, and it has not been abandoned. This can take a week or so, but it's better than having it destroy your house. It's not boredom, it's fear and frustration. |

Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: ChanteyLass Date: 26 Mar 12 - 08:35 PM Ceilidh sounds good! Kylie Minogue is an actress and singer who was born in Melbourne, Australia. I would describe her as a pop singer. If you've ever watched The Vicar of Dibley on PBS, there is one episode about the town planning a celebration and Geraldine badly wants Kylie to appear at it but knows that it won't happen because a star of Kylie's stature would never come to a small place like Dibley. But at the end of the episode, Kylie does arrive and Geraldine can hardly contain herself. Here's a video of Kylie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3f_gdeZFeIg&feature=related |
Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: katlaughing Date: 26 Mar 12 - 10:35 PM Thanks, gnu and CL. Second time HOME ALONE and someone decided to drag out all of the empty cat tins from the trash. Luna would never do such a thing, so you-know-who had a fun/guilty look to her when we came in and scolded. It looked like she'd had a blast and I am sure Luna had a few good licks, too. She didn't tear up all of the trash, just what was on top. Now she knows it is not allowed I don't anticipate any more trouble. She's smart and eager to please. AND, they are actually playing rough and tumble together, today! Luna had been rather demure having been our only "child" and Ceilidh is definitely an alpha, but they've had a lot of fun and been safe with each other. It's a blast to watch. I know Luna came from having lived with at least one other dog and obviously missed having a playmate. Thanks, again, my friends! katproudmama |

Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: katlaughing Date: 01 Apr 12 - 12:16 AM Well, we've had her one whole week and there has been a final (I hope!) name change! Ceilidh was not working out. No one but I could remember it, Morgan confused it with a classmate's name of Kylie and it didn't seem to fit, no appeal to her. So, she is rechristened, A. Maizee Grace, Maizee for short after a dear friend's old dog from many years ago. I called my friend tonight to ask permission and she said her Maizee had just come to mind a night ago as she was thinking about getting a new second dog to keep her new dog company, just as we did for Luna. We're pretty in sync a lot of the time, so, through the phone call, it seemed like the Universe was telling her to get a second dog and for our grrl to become Maizee. This one really *feels* right. I've never had so much trouble choosing a pet's name before. Once again, thanks to you all. One week later and we are still just as pleased as ever to have her in our family. ATB, kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: katlaughing Date: 01 Apr 12 - 12:35 AM Nope, we won't always do that. She will learn. Today, there was not a hair out of place when we came back from an hour away. She is smart, McNab's are like border collies that way, but she has no problem with knowing that I am the alpha bitch!**bg** She's a good dog. She learned hand signals as well as voice commands in a day, no kidding, just like our old McNab. When I point down, stay, she parks it right where she is while Luna, who *knows better* takes her time, but does obey. Luna has more of a one task mind, i.e. THE BALL, whilst Maizee is concerned with where I am and what I may want her to do, just as Merlee was. (Our old McNab.) Theya re having tons of fun together and in visiting the neighbour's dogs through the fence. kat |
Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 01 Apr 12 - 12:42 AM I realize that when you choose a dog you choose characteristics of the breed. With Zeke here, the trash is up, because no matter how many times that dog is told "NO!" he WILL get into the trash. He is a food-seeking missile. I mentioned to a friend with 2 labs that, despite his having been neutered, he still has the balls to go after a lot of out-of-reach food. She laughed and said that to solve that problem we'd have to cut off the other end of the dog. "Counter surfing" is a term that was invented for Labrador retrievers. :-D SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Help name our new dog? From: katlaughing Date: 01 Apr 12 - 01:09 AM Thanks, MtheGM, that's it! LOL, SRS, my sister had a lab like that. She even had an under-the-counter-with-a-door trash bin, but had to shut it with a bungee cord because he would always get into it, otherwise. |
