Subject: When I am gone
From: GUEST,old git

I'm trying to find the words to a song I heard quite a few years back.
I have a feeling that it might have been the McGonigles (sp?)...but I'm probably way out on that.

Sing no sad songs for me
    When I am gone
    No grief, no litany
    When I am gone
But sing me a chorus with a sad refrain
If you don't get it right, you can sing it again
    After, have a ceilidh
    When I am gone

another bit I remember is
    stick me in a Transit

any ideas?

I think you are after another song, but there is no harm in posting a link to Phil Ochs singing When I'm Gone.

It sounds like a parody of this hymn, first published with piano score in The Southern Harp (1841), but most easily accessed in print (set into shapenote style and notation) on page 339 of the Sacred Harp, 1991 Denson Edition.

I can't find anything.

I did find this...

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me ;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree :
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet ;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain ;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain ;
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.

Christina Rossetti

Yes. It was written by Gill Burns and it's possible that Pete Coe recorded it on an early album but I can't find it on my shelf.

We certainly sung it for a while in some outfit - maybe Red Shift.

I can find the words and maybe even a recording but not today. I think I may still have the original Gill Burns vinyl in my archive in which case I can digitise it and let you have an mp3.
I'm not in contact with Gill Burns to ask her permission but I'm sure she wouldn't mind.

It's a thoughtful little song and I recorded a rough version of it for someone's funeral a few years back. I don't think the recording survived.

WHEN I AM GONE by Gill Burns

Weep no salt tears for me
When I am gone
No grief or misery
When I am gone
And don't pay a bloody undertaker
Get some nails and some glue and felt to make a
Coffin out of chipboard
When I am gone

No sighs and gloom for me
When I am gone
Build no great tomb for me
When I am gone
Keep your money in your pockets and in your purses
Don't seduced by fancy hearses
Put me in a Transit
When I am gone

Weep not so loud for me
When I am gone
No pure white shroud for me
When I am gone
Just me wooly tights and me thermal vest
I'd hate for the damp to get to my chest
You can keep my bed socks
When I am gone

Wail not your woes for me
When I am gone
Wear no black clothes for me
When I am gone
Oh red or green or yellow will do
But you won't catch anyone dressed in blue
I'll take the Tories with me
When I am gone

Sing no sad airs for me
When I am gone
No canting prayers for me
When I am gone
But sing me a song with a good refrain
If they don't get it right make 'em do it again
And after have a ceilidh
When I am gone

Recite no eulogy
When I am gone
Smile for the memory
When I am gone
No mournful little tea with lettuce and ham
Just to satisfy the people who never gave a damn
But have it in a brewery
When I am gone.

Hoi I DID NOT WRITE THIS SONG!!!!

It was written by PAT WILSON and was recorded by her, Jane Leffman and Eileen Ashton - The Ranting Sleazos - on their album 'Never Lost For Words'.

Great song she left to us as well as 'The Housework Shanty'
