Interesting - Sarkozy looking very vulnerable, the Far Left failing to convert support into votes, Marine le Pen looking very threatening for the National Front, but a distinct possibility of a socialist victory, a planned reduction in austerity, and a potential top rate of tax of 75%.

Is this the beginning of the end for the centre-right in Europe?

gnu .... 75% ... yikes. Makes me wonder what the future holds for us on austerity measures our own provincial government is going to dream up on getting out of it's financial mess (they created)

Well, sIx, I assume you gotta be makin a shitload a money to be at the 75% tax rate... multi, multi-milliond. Large corporation and VERY rich individuals.

Large tax rates do not apply to corporations, most of whom are lucky to return ten percent net profit with which to pay their shareholders like myself, whose small investment income (as well as my pension which is paid from income from a wide range of corporations) depends on their success.

75%? Chickenfeed. Jean-Luc Mélenchon was proposing a top marginal rate of tax of 100% - and for a brief period (aooh, 40 or 50 years ago) the UK had a top marginal tax rate of (from memory) 102.5% on unearned income.

Corporations don't pay income tax. They pay corporation tax and then when their profits are paid out (or in the case of small closely controlled companies, retained) those receiving the money (or for whom it is accumulated) pay income tax on it.

Another twist is capital gains tax.

Bozo can tell you more about this if he is so minded (without billing)

"It is the "beginning of the end".....for "liberal democracy""

Liberal democracy appears to have ended some time ago.

Guardian yesterday.
"French voters have had enough of François Hollande and his government
Austerity and corruption – and disgust at the style of the presidency – have created profound disillusionment on the left."

Plus ca change.

BBC yesterday.
"Recent opinion polls show Mr Hollande's approval rating among the public has fallen to about 25%.

This is the biggest slump for any French president in the past 50 years.

Many people are angered by the weak economy and soaring unemployment.

Mr Melenchon called for the protest and was a key speaker
And correspondents say Mr Hollande's vision of a fairer society does not sit well with the recent scandal involving his former budget minister Jerome Cahuzac, who admitted lying about a savings account in Switzerland.

Separately, opponents of gay marriage held protests in several major cities calling for the president not to sign a law passed by parliament last month allowing same-sex couples to wed and adopt children."

We can now answer the question posed by Richard in the OP.

"Is this the beginning of the end for the centre-right in Europe?"

No.

Is this the last gasp of Socialism in Europe?
It may get another go in UK courtesy of UKIP.

Thank god socialists have definitely proven their incapacity to handle state business in only 12 months.
Not sure they'll be able to stay for 4 more years, the street anger is raising very quickly..

Fantastic news coming from France this morning, despite the government preventing people coming onto the streets to protest about immigrants with their public demo ban.

France's National Front have made large gains in the first round of regional elections.

It is the first time elections have been held under a state of emergency implemented after November's Muslim Paris massacre in which 130 people were killed by Muslims.

The party has topped the vote in at least six out of 13 regions.

The charismatic Marine Le Pen and her 25-year-old niece Marion Marechal-Le Pen won 40% of the vote in their respective regions, breaking previous records.

They will become "without contest the first party of France" and hopefully hose those scroungers off the road waiting to jump into the back of lorries bound for the UK to leech off us.

Trailing mainstream parties are now considering whether to withdraw their candidates.

Exit polls suggest right-wing parties have received 27% of the vote so far, and the ruling Socialist Party and its allies 23.5%.

The next round of voting takes place on 13 December.
