Subject: BS: Any cartophiles hereabouts? From: Will Fly Date: 12 May 12 - 06:48 AM My grandfather, in his youth, was a collector of cigarette cards - mainly by W.D. & H.O. Wills and Players - and I have several beautiful sets and part sets which I've been in the process of re-mounting and cataloguing. They've been sitting in old Oxo tins and old cigarette packets for the past 80 years or so and, though I've looked them on many occasions, it's only recently I've got round to organising them properly. Some sets are incomplete and I've been doing the rounds of the relevant web sites finding missing singles. Just wondered if anyone here has an interest in these things. They're very beautiful objects - each one the work of some artist or other - and though some of the sets are quite valuable, I'm interested in them for their family connections and their art. (I try to put aside the thought that each card in a set of 50 was 10 smokes closer to death for the smoker...) |

Subject: RE: BS: Any cartophiles hereabouts? From: Will Fly Date: 12 May 12 - 08:42 AM And a map-collector, according to some sites, is a "Cartomaniac". Huh? |
Subject: RE: BS: Any cartophiles hereabouts? From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 12 May 12 - 10:25 AM My sister and I used to collect the beautiful cards in Brooke Bond tea packets. They had some wonderful issues of wildflowers, animals of the world, historical engines etc. We stuck them into special albums, and swopped duplicates at school. I suppose our mum threw them away when we left home, such a pity! |

Subject: RE: BS: Any cartophiles hereabouts? From: GUEST,sniffy Date: 12 May 12 - 11:10 AM Oh, yus, Eliza, I do recall those Brooke Bond cards. I had a schoolmate called Trevor who was a mad completist about the BB series. He became known as 'Got Any Fish?' when the freshwater fish series was released. I've a couple of sets from the 1930s inherited from my grandfather. One is British fighting regiments and the other is a beautiful complete set of tinted pics of Hollywood stars and starlets all carefully glued into an album. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any cartophiles hereabouts? From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 12 May 12 - 01:39 PM 'Got any fish?' How lovely Sniffy! In those days, things like BB cards meant a lot to us children, we treasured them. By the way, does anyone here remember a set of, I think, cigarette cards, (which my merchant navy Uncle gave us occasionally) which depicted Thailand (or 'Siamese') dancers in a variety of beautiful costumes, with their long fingers bent back elegantly? They may have been cards from Woodbine or Navy Cut ciggies, as he smoked those like a chimney! Wish I'd kept all these things, but our mum was a terrible thrower-outer! |
Subject: RE: BS: Any cartophiles hereabouts? From: Bill D Date: 12 May 12 - 01:40 PM Not tobacco cards... but I sold 1914-1915 Cracker Jack baseball cards WAY too cheap 35 years ago. I still have some movie star cards from that era.I am the 'gentleman' mentioned here whose uncle collected them in Kansas. *sigh* It seems they are not valued as much as baseball cards. I was offered $2 each for them by the site owner. He also deals in some tobacco cards... http://www.things-and-other-stuff.com/ |
Subject: RE: BS: Any cartophiles hereabouts? From: Steve Parkes Date: 12 May 12 - 01:54 PM Mom recently gave me an album of Wills's cards on road safety, from 1939. (With helpful hints like "drive on the left"!) I've only posted four of them here, but I could be persuaded to post he rest, if anyone was interested. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any cartophiles hereabouts? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 12 May 12 - 02:39 PM A cartophile is a map lover. People here seem to be talking about trading cards (cigarette, baseball, etc.). See Wikipedia article on trading cards. Mudelfs, please correct title of thread or content. Harumpfff ! |
