Subject: RE: BS: Is Rochester N.Y. a thriving city ? From: beachcomber Date: 17 May 12 - 06:27 AM Yes, as I have posted on another thread, apologies for the incorrect city name on the thread title. I may visit Rochester also and that is why it's name was on my mind . It is really Erie, PA that I want to know about.

Subject: RE: BS: Is Erie, PA. a thriving city ? From: artbrooks Date: 17 May 12 - 09:17 AM We lived in Erie for a few years. Folk music? Fuggedaboudit! A couple of nice coffee houses downtown, but not known for open mics or anything similar. Presque Isle Park (which is really a peninsula) is nice, if over used. Pittsburgh, where there is a lot going on, is two hours south. Bring several good books. Of course, this was 15 years ago, and things may have changed. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Erie, PA. a thriving city ? From: GUEST,olddude Date: 17 May 12 - 09:59 AM I live 25 miles from Erie, lots of history around the area. If you do visit give me a shout, I will take you around. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Erie, PA. a thriving city ? From: Ebbie Date: 17 May 12 - 11:02 AM I'm curious- what does 'thriving' mean in this context? |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Erie, PA. a thriving city ? From: Charlie Baum Date: 17 May 12 - 12:29 PM The Chautauqua Institution is about 35 miles east. Folk in Fredonia and other cultural opportunities in Fredonia, NY (It's the home of SUNY Fredonia) are about 50 miles Northeast (up I-90). Presque Isle played a role in the War of 1812, now celebrating its bicentennial. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Erie, PA. a thriving city ? From: Joe Offer Date: 17 May 12 - 09:19 PM I really enjoyed driving the Lake Erie shore on the US side, and the trip from Buffalo to Cleveland is a very nice part of it. Lots of lighthouses and pretty sights. Presque Isle Park in Erie has a very nice lighthouse. (the Canadian shore of Lake Erie doesn't have a road along the shore, so it's hard to see) Now, Erie does not seem to be the kind of town that would have a Hooters restaurant, but it does - and I ate dinner there one night. The waitresses there were very nice to me...just like ordinary waitresses, but with fewer clothes on. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Erie, PA. a thriving city ? From: number 6 Date: 17 May 12 - 10:10 PM it's not named Eerie for nothing ... ok, ok ... now to the serious side ... was stuck in the airport there for a few hours once about 20 years ago ... it was a small, a very small town airport. That's all i know about Eerie Pennsylvania. biLL |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Erie, PA. a thriving city ? From: artbrooks Date: 18 May 12 - 12:59 AM We have many good memories of contra dancing in Fredonia and the fall Folk weekend. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Erie, PA. a thriving city ? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 May 12 - 01:02 PM It is probably a pretty area to drive around, as a guess. Eastern hardwood forests and lots of interesting things to look at, even if you don't find music. The Allegheny National Forest is nearby. Here is a list of historic sites in PA, some will probably be in that area. At the bottom of the page are links to other Pennsylvania lists to look at. Sounds like a nice trip! SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Erie, PA. a thriving city ? From: beachcomber Date: 19 May 12 - 06:03 AM Thanks to all you good folk who replied to this thread. By "thriving" I meant to ask if the city has been hit by closures of factories etc as some others, that I have read about and seen pictures of, have. However you have painted a more interesting picture by far and I am beginning to look forward to a trip over there. You are very kind , Old dude, to make your offer to guide us around (I sense in you, a certain pride in your hometown which I like very much) but I would not be game to impose my self and family on you. Thank you very much, I haven't made any arrangements yet in any case.. |
