shen = shenanigan = Olympics

Oh My God - thank goodness Morris & our Folk Scene will not be involved ...

The Big Shen's latest fiasco:

Patriotic Games! Olympic salute to Hitler defeat and other historic events of past century during opening ceremony

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2157414/London-2012-Olympics-Salute-Hitler-defeat-historic-events-past-century-opening-ceremony.html

Britain's triumph over Nazi Germany will be commemorated during a patriotic opening ceremony at the Olympics next month.

Stirring sections of the show, which will be watched by billions on television worldwide on July 27, will highlight the country's role in world events during the past 100 years, it has been reported.

[Yeah - like the illegal invasion of Iraq, etc.]

Although exact details of the show's format have not been disclosed, as well as celebrating Britain's triumph over Germany in the Second World War one report suggested that country's decisive role in the First World War will be emphasised.

The show will also include 'a celebration of the work of the NHS', and several hundred nurses have been chosen by Boyle to portray the 'Best of British'.

{Yeah - like the ones who can't be ar$ed to wash their hands, like the ones who abuse and mistreat elderly patients, like the ones who go to work in uniform picking up all sorts of bugs on their clothes, etc.]

As someone commented:

But if they are to celebrate the winning of WW1 and WW2 then you need to represent ALL the countries who contributed to this ie France, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Caribbean, Canada, India the list of ALLIES is endless it was not JUST a British win nor just British soldiers who sadly lost their lives ..... which defeats the purpose of having a British Olympic games.

I'm not sure that Hitler should be even mentioned during the Olympics. He perverted the purpose of the games for propaganda. Doing the same in reverse seems cheap and silly.

How about the promises made by the Brits to the Palestinians? Or the Iraqis? Or them folks in India that protested against British rule? Or Douglas Haig's "strategy" in WWI? Or Britain's part in developing nuclear bombs? Hey, how about poison gas?

If we 'celebrated' all bad things that us Brits have done there would be no time for all the running, jumping etc! But you could say the same about most nations. And for better or worse we have been involved in world affairs more than most.
It might be better to celebrate some of the good things we have done. I could think of one or two. And about the World Wars - we didn't cause them, you know.

Oh, hell, WWI was a family feud. Nicky and Willy were in a tiff because Joe invaded Serbia, but Cousin Ed got into it because of some deal with the frogs over Willy fighting with Nicky. Damned thing could have been solved without fighting if they'd talked together in the first place (see Keegan's "World War I").

If the "winners" of WWI hadn't wanted "reparations" from Willy's gang WWII might not have happened at all.

By the way, Germany never formally surrendered after WWI. There was an Armistice, but no surrender.

They signed the Treaty of Versailles. The concept of unconditional surrender was a later one, I think.

And I doubt that Edward VII had much influence then, being rather dead at the time. Unlike the other countries the UK had an elected government even if we didn't have universal adult suffrage hardly anybody else did either. Mind you it depends what your government is allowed to do. All adult male Germans could vote, but their parliament was pretty toothless.
