I know I'm supposed to react automatically with "How typical of that evil corporation!" but I have questions.

Do you really think that Idaho, with its mountains, valleys, rivers, plains and aquifers has only one water supply?

From what I've been reading the last decade, two-headed fish are more likely to be the result of contamination by vitamin A and its relatives than by phosphorus.

Do the bodies of water in question show other signs of high phosphorus, such as lots of algae?

And finally, isn't it odd that when he decides to get personal and confront somebody, it's a low-level civil servant, almost certainly a woman, at the front desk of a government office? What a risk taker!

the Daily show is not confrontational journalism. It is sketch comedy. Also truth does not matter to them. Funny matters.

Selenium is a vital nutrient for humans. I have been told by a doctor to eat more of it. In some concentrations it may be poisonous to fish.

On the other hand 6 of 6 Simplot plants are exceeding the EPA limits for selenium emissions. That is probably six different rivers or at least 6 separate regions on rivers.

Elements that are vital nutrients for humans are generally toxic in higher concentrations. My experience, from many decades of working in private industry, is that self-regulation only benefits those being regulated.

Yeah, we out here in SE Idaho knew about the sketch before it appeared. The "reporter" was asking a lot of people to comment. Yeah, too much selenium (or anything else) is bad for Nature and for you personally.

Oh, yeah -- the local municipal water supply is okay. The selenium content is a maximum of 3.0 ppm and upper EPA limit is 50 ppm. There's also 1.82 ppb of uranium, the EPA standard is 30 ppb. I don't think, or suggest, that the guy was drinking water straight out of the river -- giardia (a/k/a "The Beaver's Revenge") is unpleasant.

Dick, I am quite aware of that. It was Manvi (for comic purposes I am sure) calling it "a toxic byproduct of phosphate mining" with no other explanation, that I was trying to counter.

Actually, they DO do confrontation. But not for its own sake. For the laugh. And for the schadenfreude of enjoying the interviewee's mortification at being made to look as stupid as they are. And Mandvi, in particular, has gotten more testy lately. In another piece, he deftly juxtaposed the notions of "gun rights" and "gay rights" making a complete fool out of a legislator in Missouri. Honestly, I don't know how they can continue to suffer all the fools so gladly. If I had been doing what they do, I would have blown my top years ago. But I have seen him looking like he is getting less inclined to suffer them.

And they DO do truth. I would bet two weeks' salary on the truth content of E-V-E-R-Y-t-h-i-n-g on TDS/Colbert against a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g on Fox "News." In fact, it has happened on more than one occasion that a piece that appeared on TDS/C in satire has been the first appearance of that story that THEN migrated to the "legitimate" media.

The selenium IS a by-product of phosphate mining. No doubt of it. What is in question is its effects on plant and animal life. Monsanto, as well as Simplot, is involved in phosphate mining around here.

My point being that they go for laughs above all. Stewart explained this pretty well when he made the speech that killed "Crossfire."

Saul Goldie. I could take your bet and win it pretty easily. Fox does do a couple of hours of straight news a day including reading AP and Reuters stories right off the "wire." According to the terms you specified, I could put that up against pretty much anything that the Daily Show's "News" team says on any show and show it to me more "true" unless of course you consider hyperbole and sarcasm to be "truth."

Government doesn't regulate for your safety. Look at how the EPA raised allowable radiation levels after Fukushima---

The EPA maintains a set of so-called "Protective Action Guides" (PAGs). These PAGs are being quickly revised to radically increase the allowable levels of iodine-131 (a radioactive isotope) to anywhere from 3,000 to 100,000 times the currently allowable levels.

The group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) is all over this issue, having obtained internal emails from a FOIA requests that reveal some truly shocking revelations of the level of back-stabbing betrayal happening inside the EPA. For example, under the newly-revised PAGs, drinking just one glass of water considered "safe" by the EPA could subject you to the lifetime limit of radiation.
