Well, well, well...

Seems like the US is purdy danged hot...

108 in St Louis is hot, folks...

People always gotta say, "Hot enough for you?" which I reckon they think makes 'um sound "in" or "funnY" or "__________*...

I donno...

When people ask me that my response is "Nah, put another log on the fire"...

But this hot is the real deal so...

...plenty of fluids and air conditioning... Right???

I'd settle for some rain or even higher humidity. Just enough to put out the fires. There's one burning just south of town that's taken out about 10 homes...and I mean just south of town. It's 90F and the humidity is 12% at the moment. There's no real change for at least the next 10 days.

By the way, nearly all of Indiana and Ohio are high fire danger areas at the moment.

At North Myrtle this week - a small gathering of the shrinking clan, but four generations, none-the-less. Dreading going home Saturday morning with highs for the next several days above 100F, and one small window AC when we get there. But the house is small and shaded, we will lay low, and tomorrow, we have one more perfect day to play in the ocean between breathers under the beach umbrella.

We had a mild winter, a long spring, and now summer is coming on like going from 0 to 60mph in 30 seconds. Get ready for summer on the Piedmont, Bobert. Much different from summer in the mountains, where at least the nights are likely to cool down. The next several days are going to be unusually brutal throughout the mid and upper south. Let us hope weather such as we are in for does not become typical.

106 here in North east Indiana Our church has V.B.S going on all week.
Moved the games to the church basement but still had some cranky hot kids and adults. Hopefully, Sunday will cool down a bit for the carnival

Wa'al, like my dark-skinned 13-year-old nephew once told his Scandinavian-skinned cousin: If you don't think you'll get sun-burnt, you won't.

In the same way I would postulate that in southeast Alaska I could use a bit more summer-like weather. Last week we had 3 days of upper 70s-low 80s temps- we are now back to highs in the low 50s. Oh, and chilly rain.

It's been pretty nice on the Carolina coast all week. Supposed to hit 100 on the weekend though. July 1 will be the hottest Canada day I have ever seen.

We had 106 yesterday. It may help explain how the Kansas City Royals beat the top-rated Tampa Rays three games in a row.

I think I heard that Tampa air-conditions their arena. Sissies!

We went to the park last week to watch Shakespeare at 90 or so. Damp bandanas around the neck made it possible.

Keep close watch on the very elderly, people.

I do remember the 109-111 days in Wichita in the mid-1950s.(I delivered papers).. and it seems Kansas is having similar weather again. (It was 115! in Hill City yesterday.'Only' 106 in Wichita.)

We in DC metro area could get 101, it says. I think I'll delay lawn mowing.

John MacKenzie, you are not alone. Last month broke local records for being the wettest, chilliest May. Out of 31 days, it rained for 29 of them.

Don't know yet about June. As I said, we had three days of hot, dry weather but overall it looks like it may be another for the record books.

Actually, it is not as bad as it sounds. Juneau, Alaska's rain tends to be more of a heavy mist. You can walk for blocks without your head actually becoming wet. We rarely see the straight-down rains of 'down south'. But yeah. The temperatures tend to stay in the 50sF.

About 30C here, 35H (Humidex), but the breeze makes it pleasant. Full moon is Wednesday and I expect it will get hot and stay that way for 4 to 6 weeks. Then again, Mom Nature will do whatever she wants.

Of course, when it's sunny, anything over 25C burns my red Irish head.

JtS... I am reminded of pumping gas near Twillingate, NF (the one north of Gander) one July 6th in dense fog and wet snow. Couldn't see ANY icebergs but the Fisherman's Platter was soooo good... $8.95 and it coulda fed two people... normal people, that is. >;-)

40H today. Little wind. But we had a fair bit of rain up to yesterday. I feel for those out in the west US with all the dry timber and fires.

Does the US have an equivalent to Humidex?... a "feels like" temp?

Gnu, here in the US, we call it a Heat Index or just a "feels like" (your exact words!) temp. There's a nifty little chart, the third graphic from the top with some additional info below it, here. http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/heat/index.shtml

JtS... I was in a town near the other Twillingate earlier on that tour (coulda BEEN Twillingate, can't recall). I was approaching a bridge and it was 10AM. Three guys in uniform were running from the Crappy Tire store with rods in hand and there were over 50 guys fishing salmon in the river. I stopped and watched a half dozen of them land salmon. NOTHING tastes better than a fresh caught Brilliant. There are equals but none better.

Well, back from the beach and into the heat! Called my neighbor last night and he came over this morning to turn our little window AC on - bless him!

A rarity with this heat in my part of the country is the relative humidity is pretty low - 33% right now. I've been out filling bird feeders and baths and watering plants. I must say that 100F with lower humidity doesn't feel nearly as nasty as what is more typical here - mid 90'sF with humidity up in the 70-90% range.

Hope all our friends in the greater Washington DC area have power to get through this heat after last night's wind storms.

I'm disappointed!!! It's only 100 here and 30 miles up the road in Charlotte it's 104...

No matter... Beer-o'clock (5:00) will be here in 20 minutes and I'm gonna pop an ice cold chilly Iron City Beer, strip naked and jump in the pool...

Atlantic salmon, fresh never frozen, is a fantastic meal, as is fresh cod no more than a few hours from the water and trout cooked the same day. I will not say one is better than the others. I love them equally.

My favorite restaurant meal however is rack of lamb.

hmmm for Canada Day, I think I may open the cans of moose and rabbit (snowshoe hare) that my dad brought me in April.

....cooling off INSIDE our house here in DC metro area after 22 hours of power outage. And several hundred thousand still have no power. That was one he&& of a storm!

A teeny bit cooler (down to 85°F) outside too...

The 115 F mentioned in Hill City KS up above was the fifth consecutive day that Hill City had been the "hottest point in the US." It is actually unusual for the record to sit in Kansas except for an isolated day or two at randomly scattered places.

While Wichita had a couple of days at 105 - 107 F last week, it's cooled off a lot in the immediate area and yesterday it only reached 103. (I think it was one of the 106 days that I picked to mow the lawn, but the heat was hardly noticeable since I only did the part that I could do sitting down (on the mower). Our relatively tiny lawn only takes about an hour to do what the mower can get to - and I'm not too fussy about the fancy edging & trimming.)

Wichita and nearby have been under a "burn ban" for about a week, but it's not actually due to the tinder-dry grass and fire hazard. It's because the ozone levels have been high, and any unecessary increase due to open fires could lead to some hefty EPA fines. The increased ozone probably is at least partly due to the wildfires to the west, but "officialdom" hasn't given an explanation. Increased ozone levels are a fairly common side effect of higher temps.

Those elsewhere might want to reflect on whether unusual temperatures in their areas might produce similar "peripheral effects" just as dangerous as the heat itself. The local "news" reports don't often appear to be all that aware - if they can get a headline just from the temperature report.

John

Here in Guam out temps are pretty regular between mid-70s and mid-80s. Sometimes the temp will break 100 but that is usually in the city with all the concrete and asphalt.

I'm feeling for those of you in the hottest states. It's fun to tease you about your cold weather but hot weather is no joke. Good luck back there.

I'm just back from south-west France, where the temp hit 36C near Bordeaux - way too hot. Stopped off in (old) Orléans where the night temp was 27C - too warm to sleep with the shutters closed - and no air-con in the hotel...

So it's back to sunny Sussex - just 18C here today. About right for a little lunchtime jazz gig in my local.

I don't know what the temp was yesterday, nor do I want to. Let's just say that wearing a uniform that consists of dark green trousers and a grey shirt is not fun. And before anyone asks, yes, they do issue shorts, but much of what I do requires long trousers from a safety standpoint. I really don't want to be running a chainsaw or a weed-whacker in shorts, thanks.

Going to 104 again today...
