Subject: Tech: bonk ? From: GUEST,Andy Shandy Date: 28 Jul 12 - 12:08 PM bonk ? what's all that about then ??? If it's a new experimental system device for mods to have fun with; you are aware of the UK slang meaning of 'bonk' ??? If it was an offer, well maybe if I was 30 years younger and had some idea of your gender and contact details ???? |
Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: Richard Bridge Date: 28 Jul 12 - 01:43 PM Yes I am aware. Thanks for the offer but no thanks. It really took off as a usage after Boris Becker used it in connection with his paternity suit. |
Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: Bill D Date: 28 Jul 12 - 03:25 PM spelled as 'boink' in some places, .....but why on earth LOOK for smarmy cultural uses of words which have many other uses? I am 'aware' of a number of UK uses of slang and vernacular which put a slightly naughty twist to phrases, but perhaps if I ignore them, they will go away! |
Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: Jack Campin Date: 28 Jul 12 - 03:48 PM I've never yet needed to know what Americans mean by the word, though I have seen it alluded to in geeky circles in ways that suggest they don't always mean "shag". So what's the story with the American usage? (I haven't seen it on any control in the Mudcat user interface, which it seems Andy Shand has spotted). |

Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 28 Jul 12 - 04:37 PM Has the initiating post in this thread gone missing? Otherwise, what's it all about? |
Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: JohnInKansas Date: 28 Jul 12 - 05:52 PM We have one regular (or maybe it's a few regulars) noted for half-as(s)king a question, or posting an unintelligible statement with no context or explanation, and expecting discussion. Perhaps GUEST, A S thought it was a standard protocol here. The first post is just as it was when the thread appeared, although another thread with nearly identical subtect/title was deleted - unless someone half-a(s)sked "This thread has been deleted" and expected us to discuss that(?). So far as I've been aware, "to bonk" (v) meant to strike a blow, or "bonk" (n) to the blow itself, usually associated with a blow to the head, and may have originated here around the time when the Three Stooges were considered hilarious comedy, or perhaps before. I am aware that some have corrupted the usage to suggestive meanings, but that's common for "slang" or "jargon" where most of those who use the terms have no idea what their usual/customary meanings are or were, and ass.ume that any term they only vaguely know must be "dirty." (Listen to a tent full of preteen boys at their first campout for samples of "dirty talk" totally lacking in comprehension or intelligence - but sometimes vaguely funny in spite of it all.) John |

Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: GUEST,Andy Shandy Date: 28 Jul 12 - 06:25 PM Nope, nothin too complicated or sinister behind my opening question. Wasn't even aware there'd been a similar thread recently. But the someone[s]on the mudcat exec team, to whom this open question was addessed, does know what & why I asked; but is so far remaining tight lipped ??? I would presume for either serious top secret security reasons or sheer sunny weekend daft humoured sillyness...??????????? yeah !!!!! |
Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: artbrooks Date: 28 Jul 12 - 07:19 PM "Bonk" has the same meaning as "hit the wall"...i.e., totally run out of energy. Any (US) cyclist knows the word. |
Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: Newport Boy Date: 29 Jul 12 - 03:46 AM Correction, Art - any sports cyclist knows the word. I remember it from the 1940s, and heard it used by French cyclists (with an accent) in the 1950s. Phil |

Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: John MacKenzie Date: 29 Jul 12 - 04:54 AM Well obviously our transpond friends, and the clean minded members of Mudcat are unaware of the euphemism, "A quick bonk" meaning to engage in what Mike Harding calle 'carnival knowledge' with another person. Whereas having'Hand shandy' (see Andy Shandy) is normally a solo occupation. |
Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: John MacKenzie Date: 29 Jul 12 - 05:05 AM Un bonc (sic) |
Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: Steve Shaw Date: 29 Jul 12 - 05:51 AM For cyclists, "hunger knock" is the forerunner to the dreaded bonk. Once you get the knock you have to grab some energy food quick. Bonk makes you light-headed, dizzy, very shaky, weak and incredibly thirsty, and it takes some time after eating before it goes away, and you're never quite the same that day. |
Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 31 Jul 12 - 08:21 AM It sounds as if the opening poster chose a pretty appropriate pseudonym. |

Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 31 Jul 12 - 01:48 PM British slang seems to go for words like that. I think Andy Shandy has bonk mixed up with boink. boink - to have sex with, esp. if one is male bonk - to hit plonk - cheap wine pong - bad smell |

Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 31 Jul 12 - 03:14 PM Bonk with the meaning of sex seems to be English street slang, it has unfortunately spread to Canada. In the U.S., it is a slang word meaning to hit (1970 first usage found by Lighter); also a term of sports cyclists as noted above in Lighter, Historical Dict. American Slang; Cudden 1979. It was used with the meaning 'to hit' in England, 1972- "A British Judge jailed a man for bonking his wife with a hammer." It does not appear in Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Ed. 1996. It does not appear in OED 1987 supplement, although I think cyclists' usage is older. If we are lucky, the nasty English usage will go away. |
Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: John MacKenzie Date: 31 Jul 12 - 03:26 PM It's been around as a euphemism for sex, for at least 50 years that I know of. It's not only used in England, it's also used in Scotland. Is that nasty as well? |
Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: artbrooks Date: 31 Jul 12 - 03:58 PM I would certainly think so! I mean, just think of all those thistles stuck up your unmentionables! ...oh - you meant the word itself? I dunno... |

Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 01 Aug 12 - 09:16 PM I need OED post-1987 revision, obviously. |
Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 02 Aug 12 - 04:39 AM (2nd attempt at posting so apologies if it arrives twice) "origin 1930s: imitative" I assume that is the origin of the first meaning, imitating the sound if something being hit. A date for the origin of the second meaning is probably not the same. My Shorter Oxford gives it as L20 - i.e. late twentieth century - but gives no examples. |

Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? Subject: RE: Tech: bonk ? From: Jeri Date: 02 Aug 12 - 06:27 PM John, are you familiar with the USian phrase "Bite Me"? (Or "em etib" backwards.) For the record, "gobsmacked" is "dekcamsbog" backwards. I think if someone is bonkers, it means they're fucked up. Not too different. |
