John C.

Wish I could give you better advice, I'm just getting over a godawful cold. You seem to be at the one point where I do actually resort to a small amount, never the full dose of any kind of decongestant just so I can get to sleep and then I know tomorrow my nose won't be running so badly. For a throat as sore as that I try and keep my place reasonably humid and also sip ice water or anthing cold enough to reduce some swelling, it makes me a little more comfortable. If its cold outside try taking deep breaths of cool air.

Good luck and hope you get better soon.

echinacea (from your health food store)...... builds up your immune system... good to take right through the "cold" season.

or go for an old Irish (but popular everywhere I'm sure) remedy...... hot whisky...... whisky, hot water, honey and lemon juice.

I used to get colds from hell too..no more! At the first sign of a cold. I used to speed to the supermarket and pick up a bag of zinc cough drops. Worked too. Now, I take zinc and vitamin C every day and havn't had a cold in months.

Rick has an important point there. A strong belief in what you are taking is an essential ingredient to any good potion.

Alison and Kendall have described my two most reliable "cures". In the first case, if you have enough hot whiskeies, you won't really care whether you get better or not. In the seconf case, a Nobel laureate can't be wrong, right?
There is, however, another remedy for severe congestion and "croup". It's a folk remedy that actually has a sound technical basis. Onions contain a variety of sulpher compounds, some of which are of medicinal value. Take a three pound bag of onions, slice coarsely, cover with water, put a lid on the pot, and bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Remove the lid from the pot, put a towel over your head and the pot, and breathe the vapors. Be careful not to get too close to the pot. The "steam" tends to help clear the sinuses, and the vapors seem to have a virucidal character. The "stew" remains potent for three or four days, but I've never needed it more than 48 hours. Just reheat it as needed. It's a lot less expensive that any other remedy, and a lot more effective than most

Yep,

Vitamin C is very important.. the zinc bit helps it to be absorbed by the body...

another point to remember is not to use a decongestant inhaler thingy at night... sure it clears the tubes... but most of them have insomnia as a side effect.

For sore throats, (this sounds vile.. but I am told it is great)... crush some garlic into some olive oil and gargle with it.......... yuck...

Vitamin C and zinc. That's what my mother told me, and her only son is a doctor, so she must be right. I take a couple of grams of vitamin C at the first sign of a cold, and a couple of zinc lozenges throughout the day, and I generally find that my colds only last a day or two instead of a week. And as far as prevention, three words: WASH YOUR HANDS!! No kidding, take it from someone who sees a couple of dozen sick kids on an average day, that helps more than anything. By the way, the most common portal of entry for the cold virus is not the nose, or the mouth, but the eyes. I kid you not. Wash those hands, and keep 'em out of your baby blues.

Aloha,
Mark Cohen

Everyone at work recently came down with "the company cold," so they've taken to hosing the phones down with Lysol. I pointed out they'd need to do the desktops, the doorknobs, the lock on the bathroom door, the faucet handles...they ignored me, I wonder why.
You actually have control over where your hands go...well, most of us do. There are so many ways to get the stupid viruses back onto them after we wash them, it's better to just not stick the things in your eyes, mouths or around any other mucous membrane. And you'll still probably get the cold, anyway. (Yes, I'm bitter :-)

The most effective way to not get colds as demonstrated in the medical setting, is to get every single one and develop a certain degree of immunity. Worked for me.

Inhaling steam, with or without additions. Friar's Balsam is th one I was brought up on. DO NOT BLOW YOUR NOSE. Hot off the press. It forces the muck into the sinuses.

And Vit C and Zinc

Nana's recipe was elderflower and mint tea.

Then there's lemon juice, brandy and honey, with hot water. For a variation of Allan's. I'm currently using Calvados - it gives a wonderful fruity mixture.

Uncle Curt's Cure works just dandy...

Make sure to totaly swallow....and pull out slowly... To get past the sphincter returning from the stomach.... you must elict a gag-respone such as two-fingers-down-the-throat.....or a reversed-spoon-down-the-throat.

Just remember Litl' Newbie's advice, "A strong belief in what you are doing is an essential ingredient"!!!!!!!!

Believe and Ye Shall Be Healed!

Dear friend(s) suffering from colds, here are two (tested) recipes:

COLD CURE #1 Ingredients: 2 large cloves of garlic juice of 2 lemons 1 bunch of fresh parsely, finely chopped 2 cups of water

Bring the water to a rolling boil in a saucepan. Crush the two cloves of garlic and add them to the water, decrease to simmer, cover and cook for about 10 minutes. Add parsely, simmer for another 5 minutes, remove from heat and add lemon juice. Drink the whole thing, as hot as possible. Go straight to bed and wrap yourself up in a blanket or quilt. Noticeable results after a day or so. May be repeated as needed. Only undesirable side effect noted is that one's friends may tend to take evasive action until the garlic wears off. . . (recipe given to me by Jean-Pierre Favino)

COLD CURE #2 Ingredients: 1 slice of lemon 4 cloves boiling water triple or (why not?) quadruple shot of GOOD whiskey

Insert the cloves in the slice of lemon and place at the bottom of a large mug. Pour whiskey over the lemon & cloves. Add enough boiling water to heat up the mixture to the point where it burns your mouth. Drink as hot as possible, then go straight to bed and wrap yourself up in a blanket or quilt. I don't see any reason why cure #1 couldn't be followed by cure #2, though I don't recommend trying cure #2 then cure #1. Note: the garlic cure seems to truly weaken cold viruses, whereas the whiskey "cure" seems to be more for one's immediate comfort---as in "I really don't care if I have a cold or not".

À votre santé,

Auxiris

Find out in your mind exactly when you felt the very first vestige and THEN, just before that, 24-48 hours - no longer before, spot what happened that was as I describe it "someone pooped in your soup" "rained on your parade" "you didn't get, or lost, or were forgotten" etc. you get the idea. Find THAT and you will be amazed how well you can feel.

Cures for the common cold: A. Go to the Doctor, spend lots of money on the office call and antibiotics and the cold will go away in about 7-10 days. B. Go to the health food store and buy any of the remedies listed above and you will be over your cold in about a week to a week and a half. C. Go to the woods, grocery store, liquor store wherever to find any of the other remedies listed above and you will be rid of your cold in around 160-240 hours. D. Do nothing except rest, drink lots of fluids and stock up on vaseline for your nose and you will feel better in about 1/2 of a fortnight.

When you are over your cold, please try to get a flu shot. Laura

Gotta go w/the vit c & zinc, tho the zinc tears up my stomach. also the WASH YOUR HANDS - & keep 'em outa yer eyes - & all other orifices - as much as possible. If ya do get it, small peices of the oherwise terribly strong regular "Fisherman's Freind" losenges & any of the herbal teas based heavily on "Slippery Elm" bark, laced w/honey & a little bit of freshly squeezed lime juice have not only helped me survive, but also helped me get thru half hour to hour stage sets w/o choking or coughing in the middle of a ballad - or getting too hoarse to function.

[never felt any benefit from echinacia]

Cheers, BK

And when you get to the bunged up stage, there are some little licorice plus other ingredients, menthol, capsicum etc. things called Imps, or Nigroids (I can't believe that name), which, despite being less than a quarter of an inch square, clear out the nose and the throat with a vengeance.

Just to tell you guys what I know about herbs (being a witch, I know a bit...):

The thing about ecchinasea is that it isn't a cure, it's an immune-system booster, so it helps prevent it for some people. If you take it, only take it for six weeks, then give yourself a two week break, and try to only take it during cold season (although for me, that seems to be all year). As far as TREATING herbaly, goldenseal seems to really help me. Give it a chance, but don't take it too long -- like echinasea, you need to give it a break.

Hope this helps LG

I usually manage to stave off the worst of a cold by a combination of the following two:

1) A LOT of whiskey & then go to sleep under a lot of blankets etc & sweat it out.

2) Eat raw onion.

I always though echinacea was also a, er...wossname...snot thinner thingie.

AFTER I posted the above whine about colds, I got another stupid one. Two weeks since the last one, which I never quite got over - and don't even suggest anything that starts with an "a" and ends with "llergy." I popped over to the market and bought some zinc/vitamin C tablets and they actually seem to be working. They totally kill my sense of taste, though.
