Subject: BS: Shannon & Chesapeake pub, Derbyshire. From: GUEST,Andy Date: 04 Oct 12 - 08:03 AM Maybe Catters (of a certain age!)in the North Midlands can help me with some info. I don't think I have dreamed it but I know in my old bones that I have seen a pub in the Derbyshire Peak district called 'the Shannon and Chesapeake'. I don't think it exists any longer, having been renamed. I dont know where it was but I'm sure I've seen it, possibly 20 years ago. Any outdoor and drinking types familiar with the area may be able to confirm my belief (or not!). Please help put this old codger out of his misery. Regards Andy |

From: Charley Noble Date: 04 Oct 12 - 04:30 PM Maybe this reference is related: "When the USS Chesapeake was captured by the HMS Shannon, in June 1813, outside Boston Harbor, the Shannon's captain knew good booty when he saw it. Besides, no self-respecting sea captain of that era would allow the long oak timbers of a heavy frigate to sink to the bottom. That's how they ended up being built into The Chesapeake Mill in Wickham." Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: Shannon & Chesapeake pub, Derbyshire. From: CET Date: 06 Oct 12 - 08:25 AM Sounds like a place that needs some sea shanties sung. (Although shanties weren't sung in the RN. Were they sung in the USN?) |
Subject: RE: BS: Shannon & Chesapeake pub, Derbyshire. From: Charley Noble Date: 06 Oct 12 - 12:32 PM No, shanties were not officially sung in the USN either. Charley Noble |
