I've had an unhappy day and didn't feel like cooking; Jacqui, same thing, so we went out to a Chinese buffet. Suddenly the lights went dim and in walked MR. CREOSOTE! I said to Jacqui, "I hope they don't skimp on the pate'". Poor guy must have weighed 400 pounds and I don't kid you.

So let me get this straight...Kendall went apeshit when his blood pressure went apeshit and probably drove poor Jacqui to distraction. BUT the cuff didn't work so his BP was just fine.

It's a family thing. The wrist cuff doesn't work on me because my heart beat is so faint it can't detect it. Even the nurses have a difficult time hearing my diastolic pressure.

I too am on Amlopidine but I was started on the 10mg dose. I am also on Ramipril and until recently was on 5mg. During the problems I mentioned below I had my Ramipril upped to 10mg.

Initially I did experience some slight swelling of the ankles but this soon subsided after my body got used to the medication.

More recently in an effort to attack the "whitecoat syndrome" I was put on 2.5mg tablets of Indapamide which is a diuretic or water tablet. The doctor explained that these are a new formula and type of diuretics and that I should not be too much troubled by having to pee constantly. I have to say that as far as the peeing goes I have not noticed any read difference - in fact I think there is a slight improvement in that I am not having to get up in the night as much; in fact on the last three or four nights I have not had to get up at all. I am not sure how this works because diuretics are supposed to remove the salt from your system by passing water. If I am not going as much am I not passing as much salt??

It does reduce my BP so I guess it is working.

There is a slight side effect in that at this stage it makes me feel light headed and a little dizzy at times. The Doc says this is not unusual and should pass after a while.

This is needed only in the short term until I can get this **** "whitecoat syndrome" situation under control and get the surgery I need.

A through investigation uncovered the culprit. My wrist monitor can not deal with my atrial fibrillation. It keeps giving false readings.
My Doctor checked it today and his cuff gave a normal reading while mine was higher than a hawks nest.

My P.T. would disagree with that....especially when you go at a slow enough rate not to increase your heart rate to the necessary levels to consider it "cardio" work out.

I think thee are probably 101 car mechanics, joiners and gardeners who would disagree with you! Anything physical can and often will increase your heart rate. A decent medical practitioner will tell you that any form of exercise can and will increase your heart rate - And if you can increase it a little for a long tine it is better than short bursts of high intensity.

MikeL - If yoga doesn't suit - Try Tai Chi and/or Chi Gung.

I take Amlodipine and Ramipril.Initially, I took just Amlodipine in 10 mg doses, but I got terribly swollen legs ,and had to have dieuretics. Then my doctor reduced the Amlodipine to 5mg ,plus 5mg of Ramipril, and now everything's fine and the sewlling's gone too.

Most people feel uncomfortable when visiting medical or dental places. It is normal.

10 or 20 points is fairly normal too. The medics expect this and allow for it when taking your BP.

However mine goes way up by 70/80 points or more and in these circumstances the eye surgeons just will not operate because of dangers of the eye "exploding". Yes this is their word !!!!

I wouldn't be too concerned about your increase, but if it goes much higher it could be worrisome.

I stress that in my normal situation my BP is OK and it is no problem other than the huge increase when I go to the Doc's or hospital.

You are right.....to a point. You can influence your BP by various ways of unstressing yourself. EG deep breathing, thinking of calm things etc.

However we have tried all these things, they work OK until I go either to the Doctor's or to the Hospital. Once there , there is no way that any of these work for me. The Hospital even put a small dark room at my disposal where I could try out these techniques...but no go....my BP just spurts up.

Last week I went to my GP where he measured me at 199/95. I measured myself at 125/69 before I went and 122/71 ten minutes later at home. (yes we have had my monitor checked out and it is accurate).

I used to poo poo this idea of White coat syndrome" but now to me it is real. the object now is to try to get around this so that I can have the surgery that I need.

It's quite common for BP medication to include a diuretic - these work by making you pee more, thus getting rid of more salt from your system. It shouldn't be painful, though - maybe you have an infection?

Our dentists office now has a policy of taking BP at each appointment. (We have coverage for quarterly cleaning and polishing) My pressure is just fine, except when I go in there to get 'em shined up. I don't feel the least bit of fear or anxiety about it. I consider the hygienist who does me to be nice people, a family friend. So why the heck 20, 30, or more points higher than any other time?

I just had my routine appointment. The blood pressure machine tried twice to get mine, and still didn't work. Squished the hell out of my arm. When the nurse gave up and took it manually, it was 110/7?, but my pulse rate was 100, which I'm sure was caused by having the circulation nearly cut off in my arm for a short period of time.

Yes, you can get into a loop of "my blood pressure was high before, I'm worried it will happen again" so it's high again. You'd be surprised how easy it is to affect your own readings. It doesn't take fear, just anxiety, and most of us feel at least a little anxiety when we go to the doctor's office. Maybe ask them to check your BP again when you leave?

I completely agree with you and in no way do I fear going to hospitals or doctors. At least conciously that is. Maybe it is a subconcious thing that has manifested itself very recently. I have to confess that I have never truly been able to relax with things medical but I have never been stressed about it either. Like you I know that I am in the right place.

I do try to do some relaxation exercises though I have not tried hypnotherapy and I am not really built for Yoga !!! But I will look into it if the current plan does not work out.

Mike - Relaxation techniques can sometimes help to control high blood pressure caused by stress. It might be worth your while talking to a hypnotherapist or starting yoga to learn to manage situations like that.

Hi

I have been treated for high BP for many years with a succession of medications- at the moment I am on Ramipril and Amlodipine. These have always controlled my pressure successfully - BUT recently I had to go to hospital to have a cataract operation on my left eye after having the right one done a couple of months ago.

When I had the Pre-op examination my BP was 193/99 and the surgeon would not agree to operate unless my BP was monitored and lowered.
On monitoring my BP for a period of weeks - including "ambulatory monitoring" for 1 week - my BP was seen to be perfectly OK average 0f 120/70. So I went for another pre-op examination. Guess what?? My BP was again "sky high" and I was refused the operation again. This has happened a couple of times more. They have decided that all of a sudden I have "white coat hypertension".

So my medication was slightly changed and I went through another period of monitoring only for the above problem to be repeated again.

I will say at this time that I have had several previous operations ( including 32 weeks of radio-therapy for throat cancer) as well as prostate and other minor ops. Indeed I had the right eye sucessfully operated on as recently as May this year and never had any problems with BP.

I do not fear operations or hospital (indeed I requested this op because I am having difficulty with managing the imbalance between the two eyes).

The surgeon is now talking again to my GP and they have decided to prescribe Diazipan to be taken on the day of the next pre-op and of course on the Op day should this work.
I am now monitored(self) 3 times every day and the pressures are well within the guidelines of 140/80 set by my GP for a person of my age and "stature".

My GP is not confident that the Diazipan will work but says it is the next logical step. They don't seem to have any proposals what happens if this is the case.

The problem is that I now am anxious that the proposed solution will not work and so this no doubt will make my BP even worse. Seems like a double-edged sword???!!!

Has anyone had any similar problems and any other solutions???

Look, I started that thread because my blood pressure SUDDENLY went up too high. It is now back to normal,118/70.That is not a serious condition. I saw my Doctor just minutes ago and he said it was probably the prednisone.
