It's just been announced by survivors that an 4.6 earthquake has struck in York County, Maine. Damn, and I was hoping to finish baking up the pork tenderloin. Now I have to dig out of our house and evacuate to New Brunswick!

Three miles west of Hollis. We felt it here in Nottingham, NH. Well, I HEARD it, but Tom SAW stuff dancing on the table and woodstove.

Went to all the earthquake reporting sites and WMUR right afterwards, but nothing had been reported yet. And I didn't report it because I wasn't sure.

Nothing major fell off the house.

My first Maine earthquake was when I was living in Cape Porpoise in 1978-ish. I was on the phone upstairs in a very old house whose foundation was precariously on ledge on one side only. And I DID think the furnace was blowing up!

This time, too, that's the first thing we checked. (Well, second. I went to a couple earthquake reporting sites but nothing had been reported yet.)

"Our" fault is similar to the one in California -- but nowhere near as active. And the last really big New England earthquake was in Connecticut in the 1700s. Not a lot of high rises then...

Dinner was fine.

A neighbor of mine was in California for the last big quake. She came back to NYC really shaken. A big pot of water set to boil on the stove was empty when the quake was over. I envied her the experience.
This is my third quake and by far the biggest jolt. No longer envious.

I don't worry about you and the caldera, Rap. When that thing blows you will not have time to bend over and kiss your ass goodbye. Greenland ain't so bad. Just don't want to be part od Massachusetts again.

I thought it was a super wind gust, but it kept going... for at least a couple seconds! From photos on Facebook, I see that it seemed to cause a lot of plastic chairs and garbage cans tipping over.
The neighbors' dogs were going nuts, but that's part of their normal routines. I thought it might have been an earthquake, and it was. I don't know if my insurance covers earthquakes.

It's been down-graded to a 4.0

I guess it was felt as far as Connecticut. According to the news at 11:00, it was the second quake originating from that spot in the last two years.

J-boy and I were at his parents' house having dinner and doing laundry and we thought the washing machine was off-balance.

It kinda felt like that here, 9, except it was an ass pressed against every glass window farting in unison hard enough to cause the roof to make going-to-come-off-now noises... which would probably mean the fart flash mob would have been on the inside of the house.

Rufus the cat was startled, confuzzled and upset at the time of the quake.

He'd been in an odd mood all day, more aggressive than usual, more active. Tried to tire him out around supper time by having him chase a feathered stick in circles. He'd snapped at me twice earlier for no reason. Not like him at all. Like he was on edge all day.

My first words were "What the fuck was THAT?!?" as I dashed from the computer towards Tom at the table on the other side of the kitchen. Second thought was that Tom had fallen. I HEARD it more than was aware of shaking (although it registered as either Tom falling, the deck falling off the house or the furnace having a fit).

First confirmation of the quake was at Facebook as it hadn't registered yet at any of the earthquake or news websites.

Many people heard the same explosion I heard but scattered around the state. Only one guy in the office here heard it. Some felt a wave move under them. I felt the house being scraped off its foundation. Must have something to do with the ground below or the age of the building. Poor freddie is still rattled but the lady cats are fine. Of course Freddie was alone outside when it happened. Poor baby.

No. My plan is to become Main(E)land USA when the great earthquake comes and everything west of the Hudson River drops off into the Pacific. It's been my plan for years.
Actually knew a man in NYC who invested big bucks in land in Nevada for when the Big One hit and he would have water front property.

At 10:54 a.m. PST on February 28th, 2001, I was sitting at the computer (probably on Mudcat) when the apartment building I live in began to shake. I'd been through a couple of these before, so I knew what it was. But this sucker just kept right on going!!

After about twenty seconds, the computer went off and the lights went out. I began to think that the whole building (built in 1910) was going to wind up in my lap. I thought about heading for the door, but I had visions of bricks raining down on my neck, so following advice I'd heard, I positioned myself in the doorway, which is supposed to be one of the structurally sounder parts of a building, and just hung on.

It began to feel like it was going to go on forever!! But finally it ebbed and everything got quiet again.

A couple of guys who lived upstairs came running down to check and make sure everyone else in the building was okay, then go check for possible structural damage. Fortunately, other than some cracks in the brickwork (since fixed) everything was okay. This old pile has managed to survive through a number of rattlers over the years.

Fortunately, about twenty minutes later, the lights came back on. Once they crawled out from under their desks, Seattle City Light was on the job.

Seattle is not that far from the San Juan subduction zone, which is almost identical to the fault that caused the recent Fukushima quake. And geologists keep telling us that the last BIG ONE was about 300 years ago, and we're overdue for another BIG ONE. Whoopie.

This was dubbed "the Nisqually quake." It lasted for a bit over forty-five seconds and measured 6.8 on the Richter Scale.

The San Juan subduction zone is what keeps such bumps as Mount St. Helens, Mt. Baker, and Mt. Rainier, and some of the other Cascade peaks hissing, burping, and venting steam, sometimes emitting a pretty impressive belch, as did Mount St. Helens in 1980!

The Seattle area is a pretty fun place to live. It's a giggle a minute around here!!

Chongo has advised the public not to get "too shook up" about the recent earthquake. He also promised to build huge shock-absorbers under the state of Maine once elected, through a make-work project that is expected to employ at least 50,000 people, apes, and monkeys for a solid 3 years.

Can Romney or Obama match that?

A report at MSNBC earlier today indicated that several places generally south of Maine but nearby reported a "new event" in which the "ground shook" and "there was a loud noise."

Somewhat suspiciously, the Geo Svc and others reported that no earthquakes were recorded near the time in queation. Several people said it might have been a sonic boom, but others said it didn't sound like one. Several said "I dint heer nuthin' pass me the jug."

Sorry I didn't snatch a link, but I thought I'd wait for more details.

The "event" was along the east coast, so it probably wasn't a Spaw echo. It might have been just one of our good ol' boys doin' a bit of fishin' but a blast as big as what some reported wouldn't leave much fish to take home and I can't think of one of ours who'd misjudge the charge by that much.

Maybe I'll check back later if I get really bored. - - or maybe I won't.

John

In Hyannis at the time, probably eating supper; and completely oblivious. Two Irish lady visitors saw the "Breaking News" on the TV and promptly revised their plan to visit Maine "in case of aftershocks"!
They seemed to have calmed down a couple of days later and accepted my copy of the Downeaster timetable.
I tried to tell them that 4.2 wasn't that strong, and that when we had the 5.2 here, some people slept through it (depending on how their home was built).
Had a couple of 4. somethings here and it depends on the distance and depth whether it is a bang or a wave motion.
