In our village the little children (five - eight years old) come to our door dressed up. If we opened the door wearing costumes it would terrify them, so we don't. But we have a lit-up pumpkin and lots of sweets for them. I lit our pumpkin for the first time last night. I'm nver very good at carving it, but just do rough eyes, nose and those jagged teeth.

Actually, Krinklepops, they don't make a costume suited to your personality, but you could wear this tee-shirt instead.

At home, watching TDS/Colbert, and later, playing my guitar. The kids, few in our area anyway, don't need more sugar. And they throw out the apples cause, you know, a long time ago in a place far away, someone once put razors in them.

We had lots of lovely children last year, some with their mums, ohters (older ones) in small groups. Their costumes were very good, we admired each one. Our next-door neighbour came in a horrible witch's mask and cloak, frightened the life out of me. It's such a small out-of-the-way village that there isn't much risk to the little ones, we all know eachother. If they see a lighted pumpkin at the door, they'll ring the bell. I can't wait!

I'm going to be an old gray haired retired coot. I haven't decided yet whether to put a costume over that.

Which kinda reminds me of the lady who came into a cafe to meet some of her friends for lunch. She arrived at the table and said, "I just saw a clown outside". A friend looked at her and asked, "Was it a real clown, or just someone dressed up like one?"

Cheucy was a LARGE black/white female cat. Smart as a whip because I trained her that way. She would do what I told her to do but she would growl and hiss and moan about it. But, we got along well.

About 15 years ago, she was sitting at the top of the steps of a split-entrance I had on Halloween, watching the little kiddies come to the door. Many parents who accompany their little ones also don costumes. I spotted one such... a lady from just up the street in a Sylvester The Cat costume. I stepped out of the door a bit, pointed at her to get her attention and waved her to the door. I explained and asked her to step inside the door.

Everyone who knows cats knows what happened next.

And, she was so affectionate for nearly a month!

I shall, around 5 p.m., turn off the porch light and the upstairs lights and crawl down to my little hidey-hole of an office in the basement. Anyone bothering me will be shot, survivors will be executed. I have about 5,500 more books to catalog and I can't be bothered with hollow weenies.

I don't like Hallowe'en since people around here began using it as another opportunity to hang around in bars and get drunk -- in fact, it has become the autumnal version of St Patrick's Day. If it was still little kids in home-made costumes, I would play along, but it isn't, so I don't.

One Hallowe'en years ago, I had to rescue my cat, Black Maria, from a tittering teenager who thought it was a good idea to grab Maria off the porch railing where she was taking the air. Maria was fighting for all she was worth, which was considerable, so by the time I caught up with the cat-nappers they were good and sorry. But they would have dropped her on busy Bronson Avenue, where she would provably have been hit by a truck or gotten lost.

Like Mr Happy, I will be out. Or hiding, like Rapparee, with the cats firmly behind the home portcullis.

I will be an Irishwoman. I'll wear the sweater and cap I bought while I was there a few weeks ago! That shouldn't scare the children.

I give out dollar bills. Parents don't have to worry. The young children think the money is a treat. The older ones might think it's a trick because today $1 is worth so little. The treat for me is that I don't end up eating leftover candy!

The 'sweets dilemma' bothers me a bit, all those colourants and unhealthy sugar. I got some super sweets in Tesco's, they're sugar vampire teeth! It's only a one-off occasion so I'm hoping the children find them fun without getting high on chemicals and a sugar rush!

"getting high on chemicals and a sugar rush"

That's just filklore. Don't worry about it anymore.

The DH and I will be playing 'nice white folks' tonight. The weather's nice, so we expect between 75-150 trick or treaters. We have our lights up (white ghost, string of purple lights, string of orange) and have bought the candy. We have Hershey's chocolate kisses for the older children and Lifesavers for the toddlers.

We look forward to this every year. Where do they experience kids in their town children being happy and all adults being nice? On the news? No.

I have to collect my better half from the airport at 1810 hr, and the tinies will have packed it in by the time we get home. It's also cold and wet, thanks to Sandy, so this year's turnout will be low.

So far we've had about twenty children (mums hovering in the background, as you can't be too careful nowadays) Good thing I bought extra sweets! So polite and cute, they all said 'Thank you' and had made a real effort with their costumes. I think it's a lovely time for them, exciting and fun. I've no problem with it, (but of course here in the village we don't get nasties!)

Busy. Seeing as it's almost November 1st, I plan to outline my NaNoWriMo project. I'll also catch up on a couple of Burn Notice VOD episodes due to expire at 11 p.m. tonight. Probably also play a bunch of indoor fetch and tug of war with our dogs, who didn't get their full-out romps today thanks to my rehearsals. Between 6 and 8 p.m. these activities will take place entirely at the back of the house so as not to mislead anyone with visible light at the front.

Normally we hand out a typical array of obesi-genic crap to 50-80 kids (20 years ago more like 150 kids) as we smile, ooh and ahh at cute or scary costumes. Not this year. My husband's enjoyment of this holiday is contagious however he's out of town so I'm not sufficiently infected to bother. Not even to use the electric pumpkin-lamp instead of carving the real thing. Anyway, most kids around here clearly don't need the empty calories.

Back in my day, any old cheapskate who shut off the lights and hid in the dark was liable to get his house vandalized - sadly, this aspect of Hallowe'en seems to be going by the wayside, as the notion becomes more imbedded that your neighbours are not necessarily part of your community. (Why is my computer telling me that I've misspelled Hallowe'en?).

No kids ever come by on this street on Hallowe'en. Not a one. Not in years. It might be because it's out in the country with only a few houses around. It might be the stygian darkness and the tall trees and the way the moonlight fails to pierce the deeper shadows. Or it might be because of those incidents with the thing that howls at night out in the woods, the sounds of branches breaking in the darkness, and the various mysterious disappearances.....

I haven't seen any kids out after dark around here in a looooong time. And precious few adults either.

Owwww-OOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo!

We counted 229 trick or treaters at our house. It was wonderful!

We almost ran out of LIfesavers for the two and three-year-olds - had only one left. Had a handful of chocolate kisses at the end.

The high point came about 7:30, when my street was filled with the happy chattering of two big groups of kids. I wish parents would ask themselves, how often is my kid actually happy?

Really - between the chaotic schools, the violent or manipulative media, the pressure to excel (this esp. for girls), the divorces and the gunshots in the neighborhood, how often is my kid actually happy? (Laughing at a TV show doesn't count.)
===========
There were two ten-year-old white girls who had decided that trick-or-treating presented a great PR opp. One walked up and said

"Butterflies can see more colors than we do!" Her buddy stepped up to me and said,

"Don't text and drive!"

I agreed not to.

In the nearly 21 years I've lived here, I had 1 small group of Trick or Treaters show up. The churches have Fall Festivals. No Halloweening. I think they condemned it as Satanic long before I moved here. So, never a Halloween for Henry.

A few years ago we were getting something like 75 kids. Last night we got 22. Still fun, though. My favorite was Cleopatra, maybe 9 or 10 years old, with quite a well done costume.

Leenia, I think those two would have had me rolling on the porch laughing.

"I think they condemned it as Satanic"

Where the heck do you live, Henry? Just in terms of the general area, I mean. Arkansas maybe?

Northeast Georgia. An old company town. Famous for saddlemaking. Statue of Roy Rogers and Trigger here getting saddled up. Right down the street.

LH, don't knock Arkansas. Arkansas had pumpkin patches, corn mazes, trick-or-treating and haunted houses. And it was probably more fun because the weather was mild.

You can't believe everything you hear on TV about the southern states.

I was right there with Linus as we sat in a very sincere pumpkin patch, waiting for the Great Pumpkin to rise out of the patch and bring presents to all the good little children.

Lucy kept coming by and shouting "You BLOCKHEADS!" at us, but just about midnight, we got nice, big pieces of pumpkin pie with a big dollop of whipped cream!

She didn't get any!

Oh, she of little faith!!

The thought of Roy Rogers "mounting" his horse. . . .

The story goes--I think it was Dale Evans who told it--that when Trigger died, Roy had him taken to a taxidermist and had him stuffed and mounted. As he was standing there, gazing at the lifelike-looking Trigger, a masterpiece of the taxidermists trade, he turned and gave Dale a long, curious look.

At which point, Dale said, "Don't even THINK about it!!"

I've heard at least two story variations re Roy, Dale, and Trigger. The one not cited here yet was just to the effect that Roy said that when he died he wanted to be stuffed and put on Trigger. I'm inclined to believe that he did joke to that effect, but who really knows.

Poor old pumpkin thrown in bin, next is Bonfire Night. Not too keen as it frightens our cats and the wildlife. But as a child I used to absolutly adore making a Guy and standing round the bonfire holding a sparkler. We used to wheel the Guy round the streets asking for Penny For The Guy. Children keep these happy memories all their lives.
