Subject: BS: Nobel Peace Prize for Malala
From: bobad
Date: 10 Nov 12 - 06:48 PM

A friend, Tarek Fatah, initiated a petition asking that Malala Yusufzai be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize. The petition has gone viral internationally thanks to endorsements from political figures, professors, film makers etc. and to news stories in publications such as the New York Times, Newsweek, CBC, Al Jazeera and many others. The number of signatories is currently a little over 100,000, approximately 50,000 under the goal of 150,000. You can help by adding your signature.

Tarek's message:

"On October 9, 2012, 15-year old Malala Yusufzai was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in response to her campaign against the destruction of girls schools in Pakistan. In the face of terror, Malala risked her life to speak out for the rights of girls everywhere. Malala's bravery has sparked a global movement and we believe the Nobel Foundation should give her the Nobel Peace Prize.

A Nobel Peace Prize for Malala will send a clear message that the world is watching and will support those who stand up for gender equality and universal human rights that includes the right of education for girls"

Great idea. I will sign from home. Today is a day in her honor..see Huffingtonpost.com. I think it is interesting that the president's daughter has a very similar name and is about the same age but very different opportunities...mg

Mahala is a courageous young lady and we should all be pleased that she has survived this assassination attempt, and sign the petition.

We should all be aware that she'll never, after this experience, feel immortal again. She has been robbed of that feeling at too early an age. I wish her and her family well in their long healing process.

The Nobel Peace Prize is fraudulent, being offered to Obama and Kissinger as well as the EU. It has no credibility any more.

There is an alternative award group for which she would be more deserving,
Credible peace award

She has to be officially nominated by an 'official' person for the Nobel Prize..

I wish her father would back off now and let her just 'be'. Malala *wants* to be a doctor, but he's determined to get her to become The One Who Brings Education to All Women, and whilst I understand what a Right and Noble cause this is, Malala is, at the end of the day, simply a young girl who has a dream of her *own*...

She will make a wonderful doctor, even more so with this shocking experience, I'm sure. But I wish she had never had to endure what she has...

Let her be Malala, now, Dad...
Just let her be....

Malala has more than done her bit for women's education worldwide. Although not the way anyone would have wished, certainly not the Taliban!

The cowardly Taliban attack on her has done more to defeat their intentions than they anticipated, obviously. It has drawn world attention to Malala and her cause, with universal disgust and contempt for the would-be assassins.

I think others should handle it from here on. Let us hope that Malala makes a full and speedy recovery, and can soon return to her studies—and become the doctor, or whatever it might be, that she wishes to be.

Right, Lizzie. At this point, her father should let her decide. And since he obviously feels strongly about it, let him argue the point.

Don Firth

P. S. Historical note:   Although it had its flaws, Athenian Democracy worked quite well. In some ways, better than its modern incarnations, and we could study them with profit.

One of the things that was wrong with Athenian Democracy was that only men were allowed to participate. But--there were contemporary Athenians who argued that this was a great mistake, because, by excluding women from their deliberations, they were wasting half of the intellectual power of Athens.

"....Right, Lizzie. At this point, her father should let her decide. And since he obviously feels strongly about it, let him argue the point...."

I'm sure he's not reading Mudcat, Don...

....and, he strikes me as the kind of man who isn't that interested in what his daughter wants, other than he wants for her. If you watch the video below you will see that it is his school Malala attended...and that he wants her to become a Politician..

The trouble is, if he ends up almost *insisting* that she becomes what HE wants her to become, then he will end up being as dictatorial as the very people who are dictating that his daughter should NOT have an education...although, obviously, he does not have the sociopathic side to his nature that the crazy Taliban have.

He reminds me of the father of Ruth Lawrence, way back in the 80s' who decided what his daughter was going to do with her life...that being becoming the youngest person to ever go to University and, of course, become a math genius like himself...She did exactly as he told her to do, broke records, made history etc...but he had no real interest in Ruth as a *person*...I think she finally got free of his clutches and went to live on a Kibbutz in Israel with her man, having children and finally living her life the way *she* wanted to.

Malala has been through enough. From now on it should be her decisions that direct her life, and hers alone.

However, I *do* think she is 100& deserving of some kind of Award, and I hope that if she does get this, then the recognition of that award will go on to inspire all the GOOD people out there to continue to fight for equality for girls/women and to take the evil Taliban 'out' forever.

The sad thing is, this HAS to come from the people themselves, for until THEY Rise Up against this insanity, nothing will ever change...Russia did not change it, America will not change it, Britain will not change it. ONLY The People themselves will change this by giving The Taliban no place to hide, dealing with them in the right way, for these minds don't think like you or I do. They are sick minds, with no conscience, no compassion, no kindness....That sickness goes very, very deep...and it needs the good men and women true to remove it from their socieities forever.

If I were on the panel of The Right Livelihood Awards, I would nominate her.

What Lizzie said is quite accurate. One of the problems we have today in politics throughout the world is that men call the shots.

One notable aspect of this is that Malala had the courage more than many men.

The Taleban might be crazy but not much different from the religious fundamentalists in the military and in private life in our own country.

Malala's position is a political football and is being used that way instead of an
appreciation for the role women play in improving lives.

I say to hell with the Nobel farce. Let's honor her for her achievement and not for a bogus award.

From Tarek:

We did it! After tens of thousands of Canadians and even more people from around the world signed my petition on Change.org, we got every single party leader to get behind the campaign to unanimously nominate Malala Yousufzai for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.

Sitting at my breakfast table on Sunday, October 12, when I started the online petition I had hoped for a few hundred signatures and maybe find one or two politicians to nominate Malala. I had never imagined that not one, but all of our federal parties and leaders, including the Prime Minister, who hardly ever agree on anything, would end up supporting the campaign to support a girl halfway around the world.

Here is what they had to say:

"Laureen and I are pleased to support Malala Yousufzai, a determined young woman who has done so much to promote education and women's rights in her native Pakistan. All Canadians salute her courage and tenacity and wish her well in her recovery." - Prime Minister Stephen Harper

"Sixty-four years ago the international community signed onto the Universal Declaration of Human Rights...Sixy-four years later, women are still not equal. Acknowledging Malala would reaffirm the world community's commitment to women's empowerment and equality for all persons."
- NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair / quote from NDP nomination letter by MP Paul Dewar)

"Around the world, from country to country, we are seeing the emergence of a growing movement in support of Malala...(She) is an inspiration to us all."
- Liberal Party Leader Bob Rae

"I am so inspired by her bravery and idealism. We must all re-commit to ensure the rights of all women and girls."
- Green Party Leader Elizabeth May

"Tens of thousands of Canadians, Quebeckers and people from other countries have signed this petition. Malala's courage and tenacity have inspired people around the world and awarding her the Nobel Peace Prize would take us one step closer towards a more peaceful and just society."
- Bloc Quebecois Leader Daniel Paillé

Guess what else we did?

We started a global phenomenon. Canadians have inspired people from all around the world to start "Nobel for Malala" campaigns in their own countries. Petition pages have gone up in the U.K., Pakistan, France, India, Italy, Germany, Ireland, and more are on the way.

The counter on all of the pages reflects the cumulative efforts of these petitions from around the world. Over 160,000 people have signed the petition!

As it says in the petition, getting Malala nominated was only the first step. We still need to get as many signatures as possible to:

Encourage political leaders in all of the other countries to support the campaign.
Show the Nobel Foundation how important it is for them to select Malala for the Nobel Peace Prize.

For these reasons we hope that you will ask your friends and family to keep signing. Click here to share the petition on Facebook.

Together, we've accomplished something very special and I know that by continuing to work with girls' education supporters around the world we can get Malala the Nobel Peace Prize. Moreover, we will send this message to the Taliban who tried to assassinate her: you cannot bully and terrorize little girls and get away with it. The whole world is watching.

I feel a bit like a fly in the ointment but...

The Taliban dismisses our values, Human Rights and all, as the product of Western culture with all its flaws. And they don't seem to be completely lacking in local support. As Lizzie point sout, any change has got to come from the people themselves, but how is this going to happen while the values we cherish, and would regard as self-evidently right, do not sit easily in a very different culture?

I am not defending the Taliban's actions. I do wish, though, that I could understand their point of view ("know thine enemy").

Malala Yousafzai, the shot Pakistani schoolgirl-turned-icon of Taliban resistance, and ex-Eastern bloc activists are among those known to be nominated for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, as the deadline expired on Friday.

This year's award will be announced in early October, but speculation was already underway as the deadline for nominations ran out on February 1.

Fifteen-year-old Malala Yousafzai was shot by a Taliban gunman at point blank range as she travelled on a bus to school on October 9, targeted for promoting girls' education.

She has since become an internationally recognised symbol of opposition to the Taliban's drive to deny women education, and against religious extremism in a country where women's rights are often flouted.

"A prize to Malala would not only be timely and fitting with a line of awards to champions of human rights and democracy, but also ... would set both children and education on the peace and conflict agenda," said the head of the Peace Research Institute of Oslo, Kristian Berg Harpviken.

This is the best news I've heard in a long time. Anyone who's listened to her speak knows the girl is a genius.

The two recipients' challenge to their respective heads of state - of Pakistan and India - to join them on stage as a symbolic gesture of peace is a brilliant idea.

But let's see what actually happens.

What a wonderfully appropriate award. I have long considered Aung Sang Suu Kyi the greatest person in the world; and now here is another great woman to join her at the very top of any thinking person's regard.

I honestly cannot find words sufficient to express my admiration for her achievements -- which are really only just beginning.

Before they can move forwards, they have to complete Ghandi's work, discrediting testosterone-fuelled imbeciles of the sort who tried to kill her in the first place. It doesn't matter what kind of nationalist they call themselves, rioting solves nothing and mostly sets their cause backwards.
Whilst it will be the easiest thing in the world for the political leaders to come to an agreement, it will only work if their people follow. It may be that this pair form a connection the governments can build on, and so the leaders can focus not so much on where they're going as bringing their people behind them.
Perhaps it's time for the West to reply to Ghandi's jibe that civilisation would be a good idea by asking his nation to show they have some too.
