From: Bobert Date: 01 Dec 12 - 08:02 PM So this past Tuesday or Wednesday, I donno, I was at the local nails place getting a nail put on my picking finger and there was a lady next to me getting all ten and me, well ya' know I'm gonna be talkin' shit and so this lady and I get talkin' and she wants to know why I was getting just one nail so I told her and then we get talkin' music and me talkin' blues and next thing we're talkin' about her husband... Seems that hubby just don't do what he's 'sposed to and... ...well, this ain't goin' where you thought it was 'cause... ...in this case it was a clock that she wanted to give away??? Well, seein' as there have been a lot of clock stories of late her in the Mudpit I figured that I'd ask her about it and next thing ya know this ol' gal is offering this clock to me??? Hey??? Free??? So, in spite of a recent inhury, I had a neighbor drive my truck to this ladies house this morning and there in her garage was a perfect 1958 Ridgeway Model 127 grandfathers clock?!?!?!?... So it's out i the gargage and I have the original owners card and some envelopes with spare parts and a warrent bbok and an owners manual, to boot... I am clueless what to do with it but... B~ |

You can not only pick with them, you can also "brush" (sweep forward across the strings) with them, and they won't break. They have been a huge asset to my guitar playing. I have to get "fills" put in at the back about every 6 weeks as the nail grows out, and it only costs $15 to do 4 nails on the right hand. A bargain. I'll never go back to using uncoated nails. |

Then they can use either the soft part of their fingertip or the part with the nail behind it to hit the string. I've tried it, and it works, but I'm not dedicated enough to get really good at it. It's called the 'flesh and nail' method. The only time I need the nail is if I am either strumming or alternating claw-hammer with accented down strokes (strum)... Other than that it's a thumb pick (plastic) and two finger picks (plastic on forefinger and metal on middle finger)... And, yes, fake nails allow the first two of those styles without any picks at all... Been getting just the forefinger done for about the last 20 or so years... B~ |

The acrylic is a white powder in a little jar. It is applied by a brush that is dipped into a clear chemical liquid (acetone?). This turns the acrylic powder briefly into a gloppy clear viscous semi-liquid that is quickly spread on the nail, using the brush. It is spread out in a even layer, about a millimeter thick, on top of the entire nail. It begins to harden within less than 30 seconds, and sets up in about a minute, I'd say. It is then sanded and filed lightly to the final shape. What you have then is a heavily armoured nail that is virtually unbreakable under normal circumstances, and works great to play the guitar. |

The only ones that are "standard human strength" naila are those that I damaged violently while working and that is due to the reaction to such trauma because I have mild psorisis. That stuff just made using picks a chore when I had to and made pain when I did mess up a nail. Kinda like drivin a 4X4 in the backwoods... ya go where a regular truck won't go so, when ya do get stuck, ya REALLY get stuck. But, yeah, pickin with natural nails, painted or not, beats picks anyday. Regular disclaimer... I was not ever a good player in the LEAST! Nor I am anywhere near qualified to comment on such matters. I sounded okay in the kitchen when everyone was under the inluence. Well, at least when *I* was. Actually my deal was, I paid two bits or some such for a non-running old pocket watch with no crystal to put in still life photos. Then some crazy guy in NY asked about buying it for parts. Instead he got it all fixed up, and sent it back with a great old mellow chunky chain. I've found a couple of excuses to wear it for special occasions, with a vest my current lover made for me. I don't know that I'm as attached to my watch as gnu is to his, though; I might consider letting mine go for an even million bucks. |

I know one folk musician who's been doing his own nails that way for years. I guess it might take some practice to get it right, though...a few trial runs. I just get the Vietnamese guys (or girls) to do it over at the local "Le Nails" for about $4 per nail, and I need 4 nails done on the left hand only. For some reason it's always Vietnamese staff in those places. I have no idea why, but they must have a lot of schools for it in Vietnam or something. One thing is, you have to work quickly with the stuff after it hits the liquid accelerator. You've got maybe 20 seconds to spread it evenly over the nail before it starts to set up. Oh, and you also have to clean the nails with alcohol before applying it (to remove any natural oils) and then sand them lightly with a fine grit sanding pad or sanding wheel on Dremel Moto-tool, so that the acrylic will adhere well to the nail's surface after it hardens. If this isn't done, it can tend to lift off the nails at some point. I use a Dremel tool with a sander attachment on it about once a week to sand them back at the front as they keep growing out and getting longer. It takes too long filing them by hand. |

Yes, I play right-handed like most people do. I do use the thumb and three fingers when picking...depending on the picking pattern. Some patterns only require the thumb and 2 fingers. Thumb is for alternating base, naturally. The 3 treble strings can be played using either 2 fingers...or 3. If you use 3, then the ring finger takes the 1st string. This is useful in certain picking patterns. Thumbnail is great for long strums too. Carter picking can be done with thumb and 2 fingers. Fingers do the strums in that case, brushing forward and back, thumb does the base. |

I tuly am sad I lost the ability due to injury and disease. Bones, strings, whistles... nah... I miss my Bodhrans. Terribly so. I even miss playing cardboard boxes and plastic gas cans and beer bottles and pots and pans with my ciapan (tipper)... and beer cans?!... well, that was a treat for everyone that saw and heard what I could do with an empty beer can if I do say so myself... and I do. Sigh... sorry. Just feeling sorry for myself. Pathetic. For all and sundry... make as much music as you can EVERY day that you can... it's a treasure. |
