Subject: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: Bobert Date: 04 Dec 12 - 06:53 PM Me, too... As a "reformed" collector I enjoy seeing Mike and Frank pick thru stuff seeing what they find of value... My collection is still extensive but I'm kinda "cured" at present so the show is like methadone... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: olddude Date: 04 Dec 12 - 08:39 PM I nearly passed out when Frank bought 15 cases of old watch parts for 10 bucks a case ... Then he says, well I don't know about them but I bet someone would know and want them. I sold one box of balance staffs for 375 bucks. Man some of the staff's like a 16 Illinois double roller is 60 bucks for one staff the size of a needle head. talk about getting a deal. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: olddude Date: 04 Dec 12 - 08:40 PM aint none of these shows that Me and Spaw don't watch, we got em all covered including hard core pawn |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: Bobert Date: 04 Dec 12 - 08:46 PM You can get in touch with these guys thru their store, Ol'ster, and buy anything you think you can "pick" from them... They aren't always 100% on the money on stuff... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: olddude Date: 04 Dec 12 - 08:49 PM Bobster check this out, see these parts, I bought them on ebay for 16 bucks. The ruby friction jewels are 4 bucks a piece just those alone. I will this set to my watchmaker for free as he always does stuff for me parts |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: Rapparee Date: 04 Dec 12 - 09:19 PM I watch it sometimes. Those places they visit always remind me of the garages and farms where I grew up. And -- this is true! -- I used to play with some of the stuff they bought in one show. How can my toys be antiques??? |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: Bobert Date: 04 Dec 12 - 09:26 PM I donno, Ol'ster... Them stuff you bought don't lite me up... But if yer happy with 'um then great.... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: frogprince Date: 04 Dec 12 - 09:31 PM Fan, maybe an addict. One time they buy something so utterly cool, the next they go crazy over what I would swear is hopelessly rusted crap. I'm a little afraid that they are getting pressure to be more of a "normal" "reality" show, with contived excuses to treat each other like shit a little more. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: Rapparee Date: 04 Dec 12 - 09:35 PM Good Lord, Dan! Ruby bearings! I haven't seen or heard of those in a month of Sundays! |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: olddude Date: 04 Dec 12 - 11:04 PM Yup all old watches needs em .. they break a lot those and the balance staffs. problem is, nobody makes them anymore so you got to sniff around to find them. I probably gave my watchmaker 400+ in the last week or so. He can't search the internet being Amish so I do it for him. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: olddude Date: 04 Dec 12 - 11:05 PM I like when Frank bought the car and paid more than 3K over what it was worth .. the look on his face. Love that show. Pawn stars is pretty good also |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 05 Dec 12 - 10:56 AM We just watched a couple DVD's of the first shows. It was interesting to me because it was a guided tour of Guyville. I cannot understand why anyone would want to buy that old stuff, but apparently people do, and I'd be willing to bet almost all those people are men. And the insults! That too is a guy thing. My husband and his best buddy do that, preferably when they have an audience. My idea of a good find is a beautiful, sparkling cut-glass bowl. Their idea is a rusty bicycle. Say what? It's like looking into a sugar Easter egg at a different, but shopworn, world. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: olddude Date: 05 Dec 12 - 11:53 AM Leeneia you just gave me a mission. I find them all the time in estate sales and no one buys them .. again .. a guy thing .. I will keep you in mind for sure |

Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: GUEST,Dealer Date: 03 Dec 15 - 07:19 AM The show is entertaining, but it is nonsense. I've been in the antique business for 40 years, and some of the garbage that they buy and put their ridiculous retail values on, just makes me laugh. They must have thousands of old automotive signs for sale in their establishment. They buy stuff that has little or no collector value at all on just about every episode. Enjoy the show for what it is. Scripted entertainment. These guys make their money from TV. Not from what they buy and sell. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: Wesley S Date: 03 Dec 15 - 08:00 AM And you waited three years to tell us? Thanks for your input. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: Ed T Date: 03 Dec 15 - 09:19 AM I suspect many of these type shows are scripted to some degree. What annoys me is the chanel space they take up in countless reruns throughout tgevyear-a license to print money. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 03 Dec 15 - 11:46 AM I dunno, Dealer. Have you ever studied the battered stuff mounted on the walls of old-timey restaurant chains? Somebody has to locate those old signs and implements. And what do you know of the men who restore old motorcycles and bicycles? If you deal in fine antiques, you know nothing about them. I am not ready to accept your cynical view. ======== And of course, Frank's oil can collection is purely for his own pleasure. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: GUEST,JTS. Date: 03 Dec 15 - 01:43 PM If you do the math on any of these shows, they very seldom make enough to pay for gas on any one "trip" much more than cover salary and expenses. As presented there is no way on Earth the pickers are making a living on what is shown. They often tend to pay too much as well. I suspect that when they get really good deals, ie. take advantage of the innocence of the home owners, that is not shown on TV and I suspect that those items are removed from the truck before they film them "arriving" at the shop. Yeah it is "scripted" yeah its edited. Real work is way too boring for tv. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: kendall Date: 03 Dec 15 - 09:51 PM I USED TO WATCH PAWN STARS< BUT, I REALLY DON"T LIKE ANY OF THOSE ILL MANNERED< OFTEN WRONG JERKS. WHEN RiCK SAID THAT THE 4 string Martin guitar was popular with bluegrass bands, I cringed. NEVER! ANTIQUE CARS? sometimes way Off. AnD THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY IS PRETTY SHAKY AT TIMES> TOO>. I can tolerate Rick, but Chumly is as useless as a screen door in a submarine, CORY IS A KNOW IT ALL DISRESPECTFUL ASSHOLE> |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 04 Dec 15 - 07:36 PM As useless as a screen door on a submarine? Love ya, Kendall. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: kendall Date: 04 Dec 15 - 08:32 PM How about a trap door in a canoe? |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: EBarnacle Date: 05 Dec 15 - 08:11 AM I enjoyed Pickers before we cut the cable. It's entertaining. We saw their van going the other way on Canal Street in Manhatten once. I am inclined to agree with Kendall about Pawn Stars. Mebbe I'm a snob but I prefer Antiques Roadshow more. The evaluations seem more realistic. Lady Hillary and I once took a pair of antique wicker chairs to Rago Auctioneers, left them on consignment and ended up with almost twice the presale estimate. You never know what people will pay. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any 'American Pickers' Fans??? From: GUEST,JTS Date: 05 Dec 15 - 12:03 PM If any of you have Netflix, you can get it for a month for free on trial in the US if you don't have it, Carol and I enjoyed "Salvage Hunters" Its a British version of "Pickers." It is well worth a look. http://www.questtv.co.uk/salvage-hunters/ |
