Today I had to take a family member to the doctor. Eye doctor. He went in, I stayed in the waiting room. There was a TV high on the wall, in the corner. Small room. Blaring program.

I tried to ignore it, but it was like being in a madhouse--the voices, snips of gibbering, sound effects, snips of music. A loony bin. Dozen people sitting around silently in the din, a couple of them watching the tube with mouths agape.

I finally closed the book I couldn't focus on and watched a bit of TV. First news I've watched for more than five minutes since they tried to sell us the horseshit of 9/11. Twin towers demolished, they told us it was fires in the wastebaskets. Fuck TV.

So I was watching live reports from Michigan. Protests against the new "right to work" law there. Lame-duck fascists forcing through a law that will eventually destroy unions' right to collectively bargain. I think it might have been Bill O'Reilly's show. Never seen him--pale, cadaverous looking, hair like a black shoe polish job. Jabbering about how bad unions were, how great the new law is.

Anyway, ten minutes, then I said in general to the room, "This is fascism." Absolute horrified looks from the others in the room. A SERF spoke up. "That governor Snyder is a fascist, and proud of it." A woman nearby said, "Well, some would disagree with you." I said, "Well, some would say that Obama killed bin Laden, but he died in 2002. Just do an internet search of 'Fake bin Laden photos' to see the doctored death pictures." I only brought up bin Laden because O'Reilly was touting a new movie about the non-event of bin Laden's demise after enhanced interrogation proved effective in safeguarding the American homeland blah blah blah. Selling us torture. So I said that about bin Laden, and everyone looked like they wanted to waterboard me, so I went outside to read. Didn't want to because it was in the twenties, but I'd said my piece, and the TV was annoying, so I told the receptionist I would be on the bench in front when needed. She didn't even look up from her copy of the National Review to acknowledge me. I went outside to read. A Mark Twain story about cannibalizing the passengers on a snowbound train.

They called me in later and the nurse in back saw my jacket and stocking cap and asked why I'd been sitting outside. I said because of the fascist noise in her waiting room. She didn't know what I meant, so I said, "The TV. It's spouting hardcore fascist indoctrination." She got that spooked look but she was stuck with me, so I asked why they subjected people to that. She said she thought the TV came on by itself at 8am and shut off at 5pm. (This is something I want to check on. The clinic may have funding tied to such an arrangement). Anyway, we talked about the Michigan thing, then about medical stuff, then the doctor came by to do ass coverage, and we left.

I gave up on TV after 9/11 (selling us right-wing fascism), and I gave up on NPR not long after (selling us left-wing fascism). I couldn't even COUNT how many brainwashing techniques I noted in that few minutes of O'Reilly's show this morning. Visual presentation, wording, segues, half-truths, disinformation. SOOOO obvious to me after the long hiatus from TV, but no one else was questioning it, apparently taking the garbage as fact.

One more visit to that doctor (I'm sure I'll bitch about the same thing again), and then I'll put my complaints in writing. The doctor may not know what's going on in her waiting room. She's busy in back, and she may just tune it out. But I'll send her a letter and make her aware of it, and I'll offer some nice Haydn and Schubert recordings to ease her patients into treatment. Can't imagine what my blood pressure reading would have been if I'd been the patient.

I hate government propaganda, be it left-wing or right-wing. Problem is, the wings are merging, and if more people don't start bitching like I did today, the First Amendment right to bitch will be crushed under Obama's boot, or Hillary's or the next Bush. Use it or lose it.

That last line on your post Songwronger says it all.

The problem is very little people are noticing this propaganda and the merging of the wings. People tend to be in a state of numbness, they don't want to take notice. The propaganda suits them just fine.

Use it or lose it ... well, it looks like we are going to lose it.

I stopped watching TV over 25 or so years ago. I'm pleased to know I haven't missed anything.

Sounds like the OP is a perfect match for Fox News. Both give us only the most reliable information.

I assume that the reference to an early demise of Osama bin Laden was satire, wasn't it?

Ain't necessarily so.

On Mudcat some people glory in believing 6 impossible things before breakfast.

The OP is no slouch in this regard.

And at least one-from the UK-- has been known to cite (approvingly) Obama as being a "coconut"--from his own vast experience in what it is to be a "real" American black man, no doubt.

Everywhere I go (waiting rooms, hotel breakfast bars, etc.), I ask them to turn off Fox News. I have noticed more and more people clapping or thanking. Not everyone is a brainwashed dummy...but some sure are.

I get useful information from TV.... but I have learned to sort it and discriminate between obviously distorted, biased crap and mostly honest, reasonable attempts to present information.

The only way to learn the differences is to see & hear ALL forms of analysis and to apply standard rules of logic and fallacious reasoning. It IS possible to learn these things.... (and an internet search for "fake bin Laden photos" doesn't meet my standards).

True, Bill - but for a large segment of the population its too much trouble, when they can believe forwarded chain e-mails and the bullshit any idiot can "tweet" or post on a website.

Never underestimate the awesome power of stupidity.

I don't givashit WHAT it is. I DUNNAE WANT my peaceful waiting (for whatever) to be intruded upon by E-N-N-Y aural or visual noise. Not "seasonal," not "other seasonal," not nothing, no way, and no how!! NEVAH!!

If I am shopping, then let me think and get it done properly. And if I am "just waiting," well then, whythefuck aren't you ready for me that you feel you must "entertain" me?? Millions of people are on time each day, and each hour. Why can't YOU be??!!!

Why yes. Yes, I DO feel much better for that. Thank you very much.

Saul

Television in waiting rooms bugs me, too. The only medical establishments I have patronized recently that are free of it are the medical laboratory at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, where the techs can't afford to be distracted, and the eye doctors.

The optometrist doesn't have it because he wants his clients to look at hs lavish display of expensive fashionable "eyewear". At the opthalmologist's office, they deliberately keep the noise down so visually impaired people don't have to deal with any more distractions than necessary.

I hate it when the opthalmologist has to stick his lens on my eye, but I appreciate the professionalism of his office staff.

Oh... just remembered... most of the TVs I see in waiting rooms have the option of having sound muted and closed caption text enabled. I know of a couple where they actually did it!
Might be a suggestion would help.

The only recorded music I can comfortably listen to, as a captive audience, is classical and semi-classical. I do not want seasonal instrumentals, I do not want lyrics, I do not want singers, whether hot or not.

This is true in offices and on the telephone. I swear two-thirds of the music that one cannot escape on 'hold', their staff has never been subjected to.

I could also do with less of "Your call is very important to us..."

In airports a weather channel is about as much as I can handle.

Fake bin Laden Photo

Side-by-side comparisons, published by the Obama administration after the Mighty Barack brought down the villainous bin Laden.

The pic on the right is the one they claimed was the just-killed bin Laden. The pic in the middle is of an unidentified Pakistani man. The pic on the left is bin Laden.

If you can't see the photoshopping that was done in this...

The Obama administration did not release any photos!

""It is important to make sure that very graphic photos of somebody who was shot in the head are not floating around as an incitement to additional violence or as a propaganda tool," said the president.

"We don't trot out this stuff as trophies," Mr. Obama added. "The fact of the matter is, this is somebody who was deserving of the justice that he received."

Whoever Photoshopped those photos was trying to cause trouble... lots of folks can use Photoshop

Yer right, the photo in the middle was photoshopped by some jokester to feed the tin foil brigade - looks like they caught a live one.

Besides....

Court ruling

" A federal judge has turned aside calls to publicly release video and photographs of the U.S. military raid and aftermath that left al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden dead.

Judicial Watch, a conservative legal group, had asked the Department of Defense to comply with a Freedom of Information request for the material, especially photos of the September 11 mastermind lying dead on the third floor of his Pakistan hideout."

Obama's people distanced themselves from the laughable photo deception after it backfired, but they still claimed they had DNA evidence. Hard to prove that DNA was photoshopped, I guess. No telling whose body, if any, they dumped in the ocean. The whole op was staged bullshit. As phony as the Jessica Lynch episode. Obama, like Bush, couldn't tell the truth if he had to.

Do you want to go through all of the fake bin Laden videos that have been released over the years? I could pull up some pics that are real doozies. Pics and videos 100% confirmed by Fox News and NPR as the "real" bin Laden. Not even close look-alikes.

And the alien autopsy at Area fiftywhatever.
And the moonlanding set in Nevada.

And Elvis in the appliance department at Walmart.
And Paul McCartney's 1960whatever funeral.
