9... GOOD question. Years ago, MOST refridgeration units were made in Canada. Later, they were made in Canada, shipped to the US, put in goods and those were shipped back here for Canucks. Then, they were made all over the world. Before that, all white goods carried at least a 5 year warranty. Then, Mulroney brought in NAFTA... all such warraties were reduced to 1 year, no matter where they were made... USA, Mexico, China...

AND, fact is, they are MADE to fail. Just like my BUILT FORD TOUGH truck that needs brake service annually even though my purchase contract says otherwise. Fuckin theives!

I recently had a Hotpoint clothes drier repaired on warranty, after just three months use. When I called the toll free warranty line, the receptionist indicated that my repair issue was a common one.

When the repair guy arrived he said that today's appliances are not made to last any time, versus the ones produced ten years or more ago (as we all know). He laughed when I pointed to the term "Commercial Quality" listed on the unit just after the logo (he said, "that's a good one").

He additionally told me that if you purchase a stove with a digital clock, it cannot be repaired, that if the clock goes bad, the entire stove has to be replaced. Sad-and, they call that progress and society is working towards sustainability.

Quality of manufacture and new product warranties ain't what they used to be. During my time in the industry, 36 years, I saw many, many changes, The worst change of all was the manufacturers' attitude towards their distributor base, retailers and consumers; the love is gone, which is the reason I retired a couple of years earlier than planned.

An appliance's warranty period does not mean it will be trouble free during that period. It only means that the manufacturer will (try to) fix the problem, usually for free, during that time. Even today, if an appliance fails, it is usually in the first couple of months...the time you are getting acquainted with all of its features. If it gets past the 'honeymoon period' and is used correctly (eg not overloading a washing machine on a regular basis) it should last eight to ten years...still, a lot less time than formerly.

EdT, my experience is that service people are notorious for bad-mouthing products they work on, especially if they work for a company that sells and services products. I would be surprised that a clock module could not be replaced on your stove. But maybe things have gotten that bad.

Years back when cameras used film I recall one company--top of the line--that darned near destroyed its own market by producing cameras that had bad electronics. It went on for two years before they woke up and stopped making excuses for it. Three days ago a buddy of mine showed me a digital camera manufactured by them that does everything except make the coffee and start yer car, and I ain't 100% sure about making the coffee.

John, I have an old friend who worked for GE. He said pretty much what you did. There used to be a sense of pride in making something so well that it would last. When I look at recent house construction, automobile manufacture and numerous other things that at one time I would buy because I trusted the manufacturer's name on the product, well, those days are gone.

If I miss you tomorrow, have a wonderful new year. It's a pleasure to see your posts. I forgot this year but I won't on September 4, 2013.

Unfortunately many people these days like product redundancy .... gives them an excuse to go out and get the "latest and greatest" ... personally I prefer whatever I buy to have the quality to keep it going for at least 10 years.

Just watch the business pages, every time a new product (phone, tablet, whatever) saturates its market and sales stop increasing there is a panic about the company's "problem". The investors demand perpetual growth

sIx... yup. Ten year minimum on major stuff. And, a freezer should bloody well freeze (0F = -18C). Next one that doesn't either gets fixed or replaced or refunded within 30 days. In New Brunswick, the laws says one has 30 days to return whatever in good condition for a refund.

And, I will NEVER buy a combo again... fridge and freezer will be separate units.
