Subject: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 07 Jan 13 - 08:35 AM Naked eye comets are so rare, but we will have PanSTARRS in March and Ison in December, both visible fron N hemisphere. Ison may even be visible in daylight. My prediction, cloudy skies over Britain for both events. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: John MacKenzie Date: 07 Jan 13 - 08:40 AM Aye Keith, twas ever thus. I've yet to see the annual meteor showers, from my northerly location. My seaweed is always limp. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Rapparee Date: 07 Jan 13 - 08:56 AM Repent! It's obviously The Sign Of The End Of The World! Or something...hope I get to see them. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Bill D Date: 07 Jan 13 - 12:25 PM Repent? Why? I didn't cause the End of the World. Yeah...I hope to see them also. Halley's was sort of a bust in '86. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Little Hawk Date: 07 Jan 13 - 12:59 PM No, Rap, it's just the sign of the end of Mudcat, not of the World! Repent indeed!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 07 Jan 13 - 02:17 PM Hah! I've never even pented, much less repented. In fact, I have no idea how one goes about penting. I suppose it's commonly done in a penthouse, but I've never been in a penthouse either. I did once meet a woman whose pictures had been in Penthouse, but that's a different strory. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Jack the Sailor Date: 07 Jan 13 - 02:28 PM Thesaurus Adj. 1. pent - closely confined shut up confined - not free to move about repent means re-confine yourself? |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 07 Jan 13 - 03:08 PM I think "repent" was originally a typo. It was supposed to be "repant", meaning to put one's pants back on. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Rapparee Date: 07 Jan 13 - 05:02 PM So after you depant you repant? |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Steve Shaw Date: 07 Jan 13 - 07:09 PM Cloudy skies won't be a problem. Comets are up there for weeks at a time. It's inconceivable that it will be cloudy every single night that the comets are around. Hale-Bopp was a beauty for two months as I recall, even though we managed a lot of cloudy nights during that time. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 08 Jan 13 - 03:54 AM I hope you are right Steve, but the last few months give cause for concern. My family further down in Cornwall have evolved gills and webbed feet. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 08 Jan 13 - 08:22 AM Hale Bopp was good in England ........... on the west coast of Ireland where I spent a week it was awesome ! Clear skies and no artificial lighting for miles |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 08 Jan 13 - 08:44 AM I remember it. It was visible for an unusually long time. Profeesional pictures show the separate gas and dust tails, but I never saw that. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: BanjoRay Date: 08 Jan 13 - 08:46 AM I spent the whole of Hale Bopp in hospital...... |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: GUEST,999 Date: 08 Jan 13 - 08:57 AM I recall waking my young daughter and going out to see Hale-Bopp mostly so she could get an idea of what millions of kilometers 'looked' like. At 2:00 AM she was suitably impressed and fell asleep on my shoulder. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 08 Jan 13 - 12:45 PM WE had a beautiful view of Hale-Bobb from out in farm country. Even got some photos of it. Thanks for posting about the two possible sightings in 2013, Keith. We have put them on our calendar for the year. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Mar 13 - 10:47 PM Anybody had any luck viewing Pan-STARRS? We tried tonight, but no luck. Tuesday and Wednesday are supposed to be the best days for viewing here in California, but it's supposed to be visible all week on the western horizon, for about an hour after sunset every day. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Rapparee Date: 10 Mar 13 - 11:36 PM I have, somewhere, a picture I took of Hale-Bopp over Monument Valley. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 11 Mar 13 - 04:23 AM We may have clear skies here tonight. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: alanabit Date: 11 Mar 13 - 07:33 AM Thanks for the tip Keith. Unfortunately, by the look of the weather and the forecast, it appears we won't be viewing it any time in the near future from Köln! |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Pete Jennings Date: 11 Mar 13 - 07:54 AM In Cologne, Al, you could always just go and look at Richter's cathedral window... |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 11 Mar 13 - 10:55 AM I think I will be envious of your warm tropical evenings and clear Californian skies Joe. Do you observe from a sunlounger by the pool? Do the palms obstruct you view? |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Little Hawk Date: 11 Mar 13 - 12:22 PM You silly bastards know perfectly well what "repent" means. You're just not willing to, that's all. ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: G-Force Date: 11 Mar 13 - 12:48 PM Anyone know whereabouts in the sky it will be (in southern UK)? |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Donuel Date: 11 Mar 13 - 11:39 PM up of course If it can only be seen in the northern hemi, then look first at the NW twilight sky and scan to the right. Once located use binoculars. I remember Hale Bopp having one red tail and one blue forming a 33 degree angle. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Donuel Date: 11 Mar 13 - 11:51 PM The orbit of the solar system has moved from "below" the galactic plane and is now in alignment with the disk of the Milky Way. Eventually the solar system orbit will go 'above' the GALACTIC plane in its own frequency sine wave orbit around the galactic center. Seems to me there is more stuff in this region of alignment of the galactic plane so we should expect a lot more stuff to be thrown out of its prior position from within and without our solar system and create more hits and near misses than in the last 600 thousand years. In other words the Earth is now in a region of awful traffic after having been drivng around in the boonies for half a million years. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 12 Mar 13 - 03:36 AM My sky did not clear until late. My neighbour has an overflow running. The wind has whipped it across my house where it has frozen, turning my place into a glacier. Wish I was in California with the movie stars. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 12 Mar 13 - 03:50 AM G Force, it is difficult. Right in the sunset. Tonight just above the moon but that will be too slender to see. Tomorrow just below it. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 12 Mar 13 - 06:36 AM I was going to ask: "What's jolting all of these comets out of the Oort cloud? But Donuel has probably answered my question. Nevertheless, would the same force displace meteors from the Asteroid Belt? |
Subject: RE: BS: 2 comets 2013 ! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 03 Apr 13 - 03:29 PM Last night and the previous night we had a very clear twilight sky. First for a month. I could not see it or find it with binos so I have missed this one. |
