Another vital question that hasn't yet been answered on Mudcat Cafe!

Well? How does a duck start its day?

I'm betting that a duck starts its day the same way Angelina Jolie does, with a nice brisk paddling...

It looks in the mirror to see if it's turned into a swan. When it sees it hasn't, it waddles away thinking, "Maybe tomorrow." Ducks don't know the meaning of "pessimism".

My sister keeps poultry, including ducks. They all start their day very early by making a great deal of noise. The ducks are quieter than the roosters and the guinea fowl. She has six drakes and one very tired female. Luck of the draw. Baby ducks all look alike.

If I had six drakes and one hen, I'd change it to one drake, one hen, and five servings of Peking duck.

Well I don't like to get too ponderous....

How does a duck start its day?
It doesn't just just flap it wings
As the bright day dawns
Ducks think serious things
The meaning of life, the exchange rate...
The place of the church in a modern state
When you've got webbed feet, you can't really wander
You waddle down to the pond
Its a good place to ponder.

Well, all spring, we had several ducks, and their adorable offspring, starting the day by walking 50yds from the creek to our garden pond.
There they lazed the day away, waiting to be provided with meals and crapping on the lawn.
Don't let anyone tell you that ducks have poor memories. They stay away for 9 months, but remember where the food comes from, when they are parents. Three generations, now.
They beat up each other's ducklings, to death, sometimes, fight each other for the best feeding spots, and mum and the siblings drive out a duckling with a weakness. To die a lonely death.
Not easy, being a Mallard.

So one day I'm in Seattle's East Madison business district, just a couple of blocks from Lake Washington, when I see a pair of ducks. Not at all unusual in that area what with the lake and a swimming beach nearby. But these two were walking casually down the sidewalk side by side.

They looked very much like THIS pair. According to the markings, mallards, male and female.

They walked (waddled) casually down the sidewalk and would pause in front of an open shop door (it being a warm summer day) or restaurant and stand there and look in. The didn't quack or anything like that, but they were making little "mutter mutter" sounds to each other. They'd look and "mutter" to each other for a moment or two, then proceed on down the sidewalk to the next open door and do the same.

There are a number of retirement homes and condominiums nearby, and it occurred to me that I had seen older retired couples out for a walk doing the very same thing.

Why do ducks have flat feet?

To put out fires.

Why do elephants have flat feet?

To put out flaming ducks.

Where I come from, everybody is called "duck."

So I presume hens rub their eyes whilst drakes scratch their balls.

Hence the affinity with Worksop...

LH, the ducks we are familiar with don't like the sun. For preference, they sit in the shade.

These were plastic squares with mortise & tenon jigsaw style locking features. You could make any size matting. They were called - (and very memorable because they fitted uneven surfaces well):

Ducktiles.
