Subject: BS: Halogen ovens. Anyone Got One? From: GUEST,Fred McCormick Date: 23 Jan 13 - 06:10 AM I'm thinking of buying a halogen oven and I'm wondering whether anyone out there has any experience of using one. |
Subject: RE: BS: Halogen ovens. Anyone Got One? From: BrendanB Date: 23 Jan 13 - 06:33 AM We've had one for about a year and have used it occasionally. To be honest it was an impulse buy. We use it for things like oven chips and I imagine that it would be good for prepared foods like chicken Kiev or breaded scampi. If you have a reasonable hob and oven then a halogen oven isn't really necessary. If you have limited cooking facilities then it could prove useful. They seem to do what they claim to do but I once tried making a roast dinner in it and wasn't overwhelmed by the result. It was ok but the conventional oven gives a better result. Apparently they are cheaper to run than an electric oven so that might be an advantage. |

Anyway, it is totally fantastic. I have it at work and make steaks, any frozen meat or fish, quiche, anything really. It cooks very nicely and has an automatic cutoff. |
Subject: RE: BS: Halogen ovens. Anyone Got One? From: Rumncoke Date: 23 Jan 13 - 07:21 PM I have had a halogen oven for well over a year. It is excellent for roast pork - excellent crackling, roast chickens are succulent - and for roast vegetables, plus it is cheaper. I do more cooking now and the energy consumptions is still lower than when I used the electric oven. I can look up our bills on an 'energy tracker' and there was a sharp dip when I bought the halogen oven. It does require a little more attention - I turn the meat half way through cooking and stir the vegetables roasting underneath. The oven is a round one with a hinged lid which can be hoisted up so an extender ring can be fitted. I usually cook with the extender ring in place as it seems to cook things more gently like that. I use the regular oven as storage now. |

From: open mike Date: 24 Jan 13 - 04:08 AM I got one of those infra red/convection jobbies Nu Wave or turbo Wave, of Flavorwave.. for times when there is just not enough room in teh oven for large gatherings like thinskgiving. (I do not eat turkey, and always bring a vegetarian roast Tofurky for the main dish...and the ovens are always filled with bird) It has been great to use this, and always has been a nice option to add to the baking space...I got it mainly to take to others' houses where I go for group dinners.
