I always wanted a lava lamp. The cost put them way out of reach in the 60s. I used to stare at the one in a shop window and dream myself into its organic-looking depths. I never knew anyone who could afford one for their very own.
Well!! That's all changed. I just found me one for $10 in the cheap shop. Can you imagine?!!
I actually had a choice of 5 colours. I nearly bought several but I made myself take home the green one.
True-love and I placed it before us and waited eagerly for it to warm up. Then we held hands and watched the blobs perform.
So wonderful. We didn't need sounds or perfumes or food or mushrooms or anything.
I'm in heaven. My True-love and my lava lamp.

Ours is much more laid back than most of those. Must be the pace of cyberlife. Our blobs take a long time to form and then glide to the top and jostle for the highest spot before fainting and drifting down.

Joybell - I bought myself one for Christmas this year for much the same reasons, and mine is also green.

I love watching the way it starts off from cold too, forming structures a bit like the "black smokers" you see in deep water natural history programmes.

My OH just goes on about surface tension and immiscibility (sp?) and things like that but I find its shapes soothing.

I think the ones in the link above have been speeded up. Mine takes an hour to get going, and then gradually speeds up, with the wax risers getting smaller as the temp goes up.

It came with instructions not to run it for more than 6 hours at a time.

I spent four years commuting to college and spent fifteen minutes every day in front of a store window with a red lava light. I barely had bus fare so I could never buy the lamp. Or the rings displayed across the street in a pawn shop window on the trip home.

I also loved the lava lamps in a store window when I was in high school. I found one many years ago that was small but sufficient. I looked at the colors and opted for the clear liquid and the red wax, with a blood-corpuscle look. It's a great meditation piece if I'm working on something, to look away from the monitor and gaze at the moving blobs.

I loved them when they first appeared. I just wonder why they fell out of favour, as they're super things to have and we need calming even more in today's mad world! I also remember when dancing at private parties there was often a psychedelic, ever-changing design projected onto the (inevitably white) wall. A bit like a marbling effect. Does anyone remember those?

Anyone else remember those fibre optic lights? They looked like a clump of opaque white plastic grass, then when they were turned on pretty colours sparkled at the tips of the plastic strips. Nowadays the technology seems to be used on Christmas trees, but those lamps came first.

So I wasn't alone all those years back. On the other side of the world SINS and SRS were gazing at lava lamps in shop windows.
Those fibre-optic lamps are still around too. Alien is right 999. Pretty but without that organic, slightly obscene quality. Like watching the birth of the first amoeba.

I am a quirky lamp junkie. I have some interesting LED lamps that look interesting. They used to be so expensive - I don't know if anyone makes many of them still. One of these. Here are some other models to look at. I don't see my clear acrylic light tower any more. I guess when LED became more bright and functional than art they stopped making the art. But I love it - it is a striking vivid color, seven to choose from depending on the buttons you push.

I should have mentioned earlier - we called those "Oobleck" lamps. After Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss. The earliest Dr. Seuss books we had were Oobleck and The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins.
