For those in the UK who remember Firecat when she was a sweet little thing and thought she had more knowledge on some things than was good for her I just thought you might like to know she is on Mastermind on Friday answering questions on - no, not Dr Who because that had already been taken - Red Dwarf!

When it has been shown I'll pop back on here and fill in some bits of the recording you ought to know :-)

Wow, fantastic!!!! When I just saw the thread title I thought 'I'll bet it's Astrophysics', but 'Red Dwarf' came a close second.....

I hope she does well too. But I must say I preferred Mastermind in the old days when you only got 'proper' subjects. Like almost everything else (e.g. University Challenge) it's been dumbed right down.

As far as the choice of specialist subjects went she ended up providing them with a very wide range, about 10 in all, since the ones that she offered had either

Been chosen within the last 3 series
Was too limited to write enough questions on
Didn't quite fit in with what they wanted
etc.

We were at the recording and made to sit just behind the contestants. No rude remarks about me or the Badger thanks. The lad sat next to us is Mr Bateman (Adam) her hubby.

The girl did good. They even managed to untangle her hair!

If you have already seen it you need this info.

There is a short gap, usually a couple of minutes between each round for the contestants so they can check the recording. Between the Frenchman and Katy in the General Knowledge there was a gap of 15 minutes!

The Frenchman is an professional quizzer. He's in the 20s in the lists of British Quizzers and in the 50s of the International league. Katy and Adam discovered this by chance a few days after the recording.

Firecat scored 14 out of 14 on her specialist subject (Red Dwarf), which is going some! But the French guy's 16 on general knowledge was bound to clinch it. (When you say he's professional, Tig, do you mean he is paid to enter, or do these comps have prize money?)

I saw the programme and think that she should of won a lot of the Frenchie's answers were mostly unintelligble (except to frenchmen)

The quiz league tables are run by the British (and World) Quiz Association. The current Number One is Kevin "Eggheads" Ashman. You get points as to where you come in the various quiz events they run throughout the year, and that is your ranking. As far as I know, there are cash prizes as well.

What can one say to a line like that? Apart from practically anything? {evil grin}

If the Frenchman is a professional quizzer, I can only say he wasn't terribly impressive at his specialist subject. As for his GK, I scored nearly as well aas he did, and I hadn't been practicing for it! Didn't do quite that well on everyone else's GK...

Firecat asked him about his next subject and was told "Garibaldi". Her answer to him was "all I know about that is that it's a biscuit :-)"
His reaction "I know nothing about him either - but I will learn".

That fits in with his general attitude to both the show and the other contestants. Obviously he depends on his general knowledge and the ability to remember easily.

We were very proud of her. I bought her a black hoody that says I Survived the Black Chair Mastermind 2013 because she really deserved it.
(Just don't say either Laurel or Bay to her)

I read the questions and wish Red Dwarf was shown here. (If it has been, I missed it.) I didn't read the answers, because without seeing the shows the answers would mean little to me. I'm still smiling at your success.
