Subject: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: kendall Date: 31 Jan 13 - 07:28 PM I get conflicting statements that Fox noise is banned in Canada. Others say not so. What is the truth? |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Little Hawk Date: 31 Jan 13 - 07:39 PM No, it's not true. Fox News is definitely available in Canada. I don't think it has a very big fan base here, but it is available. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: frogprince Date: 31 Jan 13 - 07:45 PM Prob'ly most Canadians assume it's a subsidiary of the Comedy Channel. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Ed T Date: 31 Jan 13 - 08:40 PM I believe Fox may be on my cable package - but I don't watch it or Sun TV either. I don'tsee how it would be banned under any Canadian statute, unless it is clearly and knowingly promoting hate? But, saying that CRTC has tight control of competition on the radio-tv airwaves. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: GUEST,999 Date: 31 Jan 13 - 08:52 PM In a word, it's not true that FOX News is banned in Canada. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 31 Jan 13 - 09:18 PM Carried by Shaw Cable in Calgary, as an extra-cost item ($1.75/mo., I think). MSNBC, CNBC, Bloomberg and other "news" and blather channels are available. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Songwronger Date: 31 Jan 13 - 11:02 PM Fox news is no worse than NPR. I listened to NPR for the first time in a while the other day. Report from Mali. Female reporter, black woman, French accent. Saying that Mali is the gateway to Europe and the world, and the U.S. MUST fight in Mali in order to stop Chinese aggression. Amazing. Z. Brezinski's 40-year-old program to put the U.S. in a world war with China. Brezinski the handler of Carter and Obama. And NPR reporting lackadaisically that we need to go toe-to-toe with the Chinese to secure Africa's raw materials. Fox news is obscene, but no worse than NPR. NPR is just slicker and more low-key. Both preach death and destruction. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Amos Date: 31 Jan 13 - 11:14 PM SW, you must have listened to a totally different NPR than the one I get, or your ability to understand human communication is seriously dinged by youthful trauma. I suspect the latter. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: GUEST,Musket sans cookie Date: 01 Feb 13 - 03:26 AM I don't know about banning Fox but if they did so here in The UK, satirical comedy programmes on The BBC would run out of material. Sometimes a Fox news item is just screened with no introduction or comment as it is self explanatory. Mind you, it runs the risk of us becoming smug when we laugh at the gullibility of some of our cousins across the pond... |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Nigel Parsons Date: 01 Feb 13 - 04:20 AM I enjoy watching the BBC news channel when in my local Wetherspoons (a large UK pub chain). They have the sound off & the subtitles on. Some of the subtitles are hilarious. You would think that when the newsreaders are reading from a prepared script that the subtitlers would be given that script & just have to feed it in at the right pace to match what's being said on-screen. Nope! they seem to try to do the subtitle while the programme is being streamed 'live'. It wouldn't be quite so bad if they checked & corrected them later, but when the same news comes round (on roughly a half-hour loop) the same howlers are still there. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: GUEST,Musket sans cookie Date: 01 Feb 13 - 06:16 AM Sub titles are software driven and nothing to do with BBC News or anyone else. They cut in at the broadcast feed end, hence work during live interviews. I was giving a talk, no script at a conference the other year and was fascinated at being distracted by the sub title feed that was on the monitors and big screen. I suggested that a) they try to ensure speakers can't see the distraction and b) they let us see afterwards as it was an object lesson in clear diction required! They improve with use so I assume a regular news reader gets a more accurate translation. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Greg F. Date: 01 Feb 13 - 09:07 AM Fox news is no worse than NPR. ShitWringer, that statement may be in contention for one of the top ten most assinine things ever said on this forum. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Airymouse Date: 01 Feb 13 - 10:30 PM Some English words are hard to pronounce because some of their letters are silent. For example, some people have trouble with "schism", because they don't realize that "ch" is silent. Similarly, it's important to know that the "x" in Fox News is not pronounced. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Mooh Date: 02 Feb 13 - 03:24 PM We get Fox news in Canada but I don't watch it except to get a laugh, and when I see a link to it for some reason on a discussion forum or Facebook. What a waste of airtime it is. I can't believe people like this shit. Other news networks are sliding in quality, maybe because there isn't enough coin to do the job right, but Fox news is just a joke...except that some people actually form their opinions around it. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Little Hawk Date: 02 Feb 13 - 08:05 PM How much you like Fox News probably depends mostly on where you grew up, and what your parents generally believed in. This is how people's foundational beliefs are usually formed...during their childhood. By the time they reach their teens, their minds are usually all made up about who "the good guys" and "the bad guys" are, and they interpret everything on that basis for the rest of their lives. Only a few free spirits are ever born to break the mold that they were cast in. Most just repeat whatever they were told. "Thus are the sins of the fathers passed on the the sons, yea, even to the 7th generation." Political parties all know this, and they work very hard to keep it that way. The last thing on Earth they want you to do is think for yourself. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Greg F. Date: 03 Feb 13 - 10:01 AM No, Hawk - no more of your relativist apologias. How much you like Faux News depends on how much of an ignorant moron imperviousto fact and with no critical thinking ability whatsoever you are. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 03 Feb 13 - 04:47 PM I get hundred of stations of my space-bird link. However my time is worth more than wasting it on any shit from Fox, so my tuner just does not go there! |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: GUEST Date: 04 Feb 13 - 11:57 AM Fox News is not banned in Canada, but you gotta pay for it. Here in Toronto Fox News costs $2.00 per month on Rogers cable. Not really worth it when we have Sun News which is just as stupid included in the package. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Feb 13 - 05:07 PM Yes, reading the Toronto Sun at the restaurant is all you really need to do to find out what Fox News might be talking about. And you can get it free at any cheaper restaurant. And you can read the entire news section in, oh, a minute or so, because 99% of that stupid paper is consumed by the advertising and the sports pages. It's fine for wrapping fish, though. Or starting fires. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: saulgoldie Date: 05 Feb 13 - 01:52 PM I'd take a discount off my cable bill to offload Fox "News." In fact, I think it is only a matter of time before we get offered a cable "menu" that allows us to get what we want, and not pay for what we don't want. I mean, besides F"N," how many shopping channels do I *really* need, anyway? Fox is hardly better than NPR? Yeah, what the others have said. Just one recent example--Bill O'Really spewing about immigrants, allthewhile not at all acknowledging that his people once came here and were the spat-upon immigrants of their day. Nevermind that anyone whose ancestors arrived after about 1450 BCE were ALL imigrants. But Fox never lets the facts get in the way of a healthy rant. Whereas NPR meticulously fact-checks what they say, and apologizes and corrects it when they get it wrong, which is hardly ever. Saul |

Subject: RE: BS: Fox News Banned in Canada? From: Mooh Date: 18 Apr 13 - 03:09 PM It is a piece of crap, but it is on the dial. I don't have a choice as it's part of the package we get in the bundle. I've watched it for a couple of minutes a couple of times just because it's amusing at first, but then I realize how tragic it is that it passes as news. It's a waste, for sure. Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Willie-O Date: 18 Apr 13 - 07:04 PM Trust me, we not only have access to Fox News, our own variant "SunTV" on basic cable/satellite (satellite anyway), we also have PLENTY of right-wing blowhard talk radio stations. Sure, we have CBC which, despite rightist whinings to the contrary, actually airs most points of the political compass, short of the extremes at either ends. But privately held media, which certainly outnumbers public broadcasters both in outlets and listeners, is overwhelmingly conservative. It is interesting and instructive to note that the grand poohbah of SunTV, before he took on that project, was Stephen Harper's mastermind of communications, Kory Teneycke. The rumour probably started because SunTV was nicknamed "Fox News North" by its opponents during its licencing hearings, and it had that one-degree-separation from the Dark Lord. Where the rumour went off the factual rails was that Sun got its licence to broadcast without a whole lot of difficulty. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Fox news banned in Canada? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 18 Apr 13 - 07:24 PM This thread is going round in circles. The presence of this channel on Canadian cable was reported on January 31. The Sun is an abomination resembling Brit Tabloids. |
