Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 24 Mar 13 - 06:26 PM Thank you from me too! But regarding 'the warmth of the season', it's blooming cold here in Norfolk UK. Spring seems light years away! (I've always seen Palm Sunday to be a rather solemn occasion and the start of the momentous events of Holy Week. Today in church 49 verses of the Gospel were read with quiet sadness and respect. We weren't being joyous, instead we were feeling Jesus' pain and humiliation. Perhaps Easter Day is a more appropriate time for joy?) |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Jack the Sailor Date: 24 Mar 13 - 06:33 PM How can you be said when you know the outcome? :-) ) |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Mar 13 - 06:34 PM Hi, Eliza - Palm Sunday is an interesting mix of emotions, as is Maundy Thursday. Both services start out with a joyous tone, and then end up very somber. Seems to reflect real life - it's never pure joy, and never pure sorrow. And this week gives us a chance to do some of our best music. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: GUEST,mg Date: 24 Mar 13 - 06:40 PM when did the ass all of a sudden become a colt? |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 Mar 13 - 07:57 PM They must be using a dodgy translation up your way mg. An she-ass, accomnoanied by a foal is what the Gospel says. Some translations call the foal a colt (which is not the normal term for a young donkey), but there's no suggestion Jesus is riding on the poor little thing. He's on the mother. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: mg Date: 24 Mar 13 - 08:09 PM they switched the gospel at whim. Also I want to a funeral rosary and they picked and swapped some sorrowful, joyful etc..mixed them all up. it is just not kosher. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Rapparee Date: 24 Mar 13 - 09:00 PM Yeah, and they threw in some new thing called "The Luminous Mysteries." Me, I celebrate all during Lent. I even celebrate on Good Friday. If you're Christian you should too -- Jesus of Nazareth died that day to save us! |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Mar 13 - 09:18 PM mg, the translation of the scriptures used in the Mass in the U.S. has been the same since 1999, but the Passion read on Palm Sunday changes on a three-year rotation - Matthew, Mark, and then Luke this year (same with a number of churches that use the Common Lectionary). There are differences in the text of these three "synoptic" (with one eye) Gospels, but the story is very much the same in all three. But yeah, sometimes it's ass, sometimes foal, sometimes colt. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Rapparee Date: 24 Mar 13 - 09:51 PM My Bible out here says that he told the disciples that they'd find in town a strawberry roan that no one could ride and to bring it to him. If the owner asked what was going on, they were to tell him that that strawberry roan was finally gonna be rode. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Mar 13 - 10:03 PM Oh, that strawberry roan... |

Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 25 Mar 13 - 06:32 AM Hello Joe! Agree about the music. But our church is sometimes a bit 'happy-clappy' so to my great disappointment we didn't sing 'Ride on, ride on in Majesty' or 'My song is Love Unknown', both of which I really like. The former was sung that evening on Songs of Praise on BBC TV, so I did at least hear it. We had some modern stuff instead. I suppose it's alright, and the vicar chooses it to attract the younger folk to church. However, there were only twelve of us there, nobody under about seventy, shivering with cold and watching our frozen breath rise like incense into the air! The sombre aspect for me is engendered by the fickleness of the crowd, "Hosanna!" one minute and "Crucify Him!" the next. Not to mention the shuttling backwards and forwards of Jesus between Herod and Pilate, the demands for magic tricks by the former and the mockery of the Roman guards. And Jesus knew He was to die, He had to master his terror and try to get some courage from somewhere. I find Holy Week a roller coaster of emotion, only feeling joy on Easter Day itself. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 25 Mar 13 - 06:34 AM Forgot to mention that there are never any flowers, hangings, decoration or colour in our church throughout Lent and all this week. Just deepest purple. So the sombre atmosphere is even reflected in the surroundings. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: GUEST,Musket sans cookie Date: 25 Mar 13 - 10:27 AM I wished my mate a happy palm Sunday in the pub last night. He said for him every Sunday is palm Sunday. I suppose it is since his missus left him. Hat. Coat. take II |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 25 Mar 13 - 10:39 AM In the service I was at, it was pointed out that only Matthew told of palm leaves being strewn in His path. Luke says it was coats. I'll get me frond. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: GUEST,mg Date: 25 Mar 13 - 03:28 PM I could never get into being happy or sad on command. Couldn't be happy on Christmas because before you know it Jesus had to die on the cross. We were so filled with misery in Lent that by the time Easter came around we couldn't shake it. I don't remember Easter as being all that happy or festive although we were told it was supposed to be. Honestly, there was one day a year that all misery was suspended, except for remembering your poor ancestors in the potato famine, and that was St. Patrick's Day. Lent was suspended. Friday was suspended if it happened on Friday. I actually like Good Friday. I take the day off and go to the stations of the cross in an old church in Astoria. You get a plenary indulgance if you go to the stations on Good Friday. I do it as an insurance policy every year. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Rapparee Date: 25 Mar 13 - 10:53 PM Surprised the Pastor and went to confession -- first time since July 4, 1964. That was before he was born. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Mar 13 - 02:32 AM I hope you enjoyed confession, Rap. Last time I went, we concluded with a hug - the priest has been a friend for 30 years. I have to say that during my seminary days, Holy Week was spoiled somewhat by term papers and midterm exams. Term papers had to be in before we left for home Easter Sunday morning after Mass - so Holy Saturday was often an all-nighter for me. When you think back on the "good old days" of high school and college, do you ever remember how stressful it was? I like Holy Week much more now that I'm an adult with no responsibilities (come to think of it, my income taxes are due soon....) Easter sunrise service on the shore of Lake Michigan, was always a memorable event for me (and I usually had my papers done by then). -Joe Procrastinator- |

I told him I sold drugs and porn to children and retired nuns. He still didn't believe me. It didn't end with a hug, but he did thank me for the six-pack of IPA I brought him. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Nigel Parsons Date: 26 Mar 13 - 11:03 AM Let's see it from the donkey's point of view (G K Chesterton) When fishes flew and forests walked And figs grew upon thorn, Some moment when the moon was blood Then surely I was born. With monstrous head and sickening cry And ears like errant wings, The devil's walking parody On all four-footed things. The tattered outlaw of the earth, Of ancient crooked will; Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb, I keep my secret still. Fools! For I also had my hour; One far fierce hour and sweet: There was a shout about my ears, And palms before my feet. And best wishes to all at this blessed time. I often think that there should be a final verse to 'resolve' that poem! When forests walked, and fishes flew, Though I looked rather odd, But, at that time, I knew. I KNEW. I'd borne the Son of God! Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Dave the Gnome Date: 09 Apr 17 - 05:27 AM I am not religious as I am sure everyone knows by now but the ritual and traditions, particularly those of Russian Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism in which I was brought up, will always remain special to me. I always say that religion is fine until you start bringing all that god stuff into it:-) At Catholic junior school I learned how to make a cross out of a palm leaf and that is a skill I retain to this day! But the memory I treasure most, mainly because it reminds me of my Dad, is the Orthodox tradition of hitting people on the head, very gently of course, with twigs of pussy willow. What I cannot remember is the phrase chanted while performing the ritual. Must have been either Russian or Slavonic and was just two words repeated. Started with something that sounded like "veldaclos". May be a faulty memory anyway but can anyone cast any light on it? Joe maybe? Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Steve Shaw Date: 09 Apr 17 - 09:03 AM We always hoped to get the biggest palm cross. On Ash Wednesday the trick was to jerk your forehead just as the priest was smearing you with whatever that greasy substance was, the aim being to get the biggest smear in your class. 36 people murdered in Egypt today as they attended Palm Sunday Mass. 😥 |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Senoufou Date: 09 Apr 17 - 10:42 AM Dave, in the Ukraine, they say, "Ya ne byu, verba bye. Za tizhden." according to Youtube. It means apparently, "I'm not striking you, the pussy willow is striking you!" |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: DMcG Date: 09 Apr 17 - 11:10 AM Seasons blessings to those who care for such things, and general good will to the rest! Musically speaking, I like "Gloria Laus and Honor tibi sit" as both the Gregorian chant and the lively verion performed by Royston and Heather Wood but the loose translation "All glory, praise and Honour to thee Redeemer King" has always been a bit dire in any church I have been in. Maybe it is the congregations I have been in but it tends to be slow, timidly sung and disorganised when the people at the front of the procession get out of time with those at the rear. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 09 Apr 17 - 12:06 PM We had two Kendrick hymns, Servant King and Make-way. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: DMcG Date: 09 Apr 17 - 12:42 PM One innovation I introduced to a church a few years back was Kendrick's "Majesty" at the end of Maundy Thursday but to ignore the "Triumphantly" instruction and sing it subdued and with sadness in the chorus. I have to say the congregation was in tears. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: DMcG Date: 09 Apr 17 - 12:46 PM Sorry I meant "meekness and majesty" |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: keberoxu Date: 09 Apr 17 - 02:27 PM Palm Sunday was an upbeat occasion in the middle-of-the-road Protestant-merger denomination to which my family was faithful. Dreary Palm-Sunday observances, in my experience, are High-Church rituals. The less ritual, the cheerier the spring sunday in question. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Lanfranc Date: 09 Apr 17 - 05:08 PM It is reported that followers of the "religion of peace" have ensured that Palm Sunday was celebrated in true peaceful Islamic fashion in Egypt at least. Is this more false news? Or another wake up call! Sorry to introduce a touch of contemporary reality, but someone has to. Alleluia! Alan |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Apr 17 - 08:58 PM Many ethnic groups have an Easter greeting that goes like this: a: He is risen, alleluia. b: He is risen indeed, alleluia, alleluia. Since I married a Polish Rhode Island woman and inherited a Polish Rhode Island mother-in-law, I'm used to hearing it in Polish. Are there similar traditional ethnic greetings for Palm Sunday? -Joe- I"m sorry to hear of the bombing of Coptic churches in Egypt this morning. I visited a few Coptic churches when I was in Egypt. The people were so nice, and they were so proud of their religion and their traditions. |

Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Lanfranc Date: 10 Apr 17 - 01:41 PM I beg to differ, Steve. Just Google "violent verses in the Koran". All religions are stupid, but only islam contrIves to be obnoxious, intolerant and supremacist as well. Imagine no religion. Alan |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Steve Shaw Date: 10 Apr 17 - 01:47 PM That demonstrates an indigestible level of intolerance towards one and a half billion peaceful Muslims and it's an attitude that serves only to exacerbate the problems of the world. Choose your target more astutely. |
Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Apr 17 - 04:32 PM Palm Sunday greetings to you, Lanfranc. I think people (and religions) get into trouble when they make sweeping condemnations, and even worse when they base violent action on those condemnations. It's quite true that some members of most groups are guilty of such actions. And yes, I suppose it's true that one can find stupidity, obnoxiousness, intolerance, and supremacist leanings in all groups - and perhaps in all individuals, including ourselves. But I think it's also possible to find wisdom and good in almost all groups and almost all individuals. But sweeping statements are almost always wrong, as is yours. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 11 Apr 17 - 04:07 AM It has to be said that in recent years extreme Islam has had the monopoly on religious mass murders, the main victims being other kinds of Muslims and Christians. Subject: RE: BS: Palm Sunday Greeting From: Steve Shaw Date: 11 Apr 17 - 04:53 AM Yes Keith but WE know they are not mainstream because there are very few of them in one and a half billion Muslims. The very definition of non-mainstream. I really don't care how a tiny bunch of fanatics see themselves. And what a great idea it would be to keep anti-Islam advocacy out of this thread. I mentioned the killings with sadness because they happened as Palm Sunday was being celebrated, that's all. |
