Subject: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Bobert Date: 03 Apr 13 - 06:04 PM Well, well, well... So it was time to trade our 2004 Honda CRV because it had 200K miles and we have flat out out-grown it and I've had my eye on the Ford Flex since it came out so... ... we were in the middle of purchasing the Flex and I mentioned to our salesman that for the last half of my working life I owned a used car business and, not sure how it happened but next thing ya' know the his manager was talking to me about taking a part time job as a driver... Drivers drive cars from auctions and to other dealerships... So, they called me last night and asked if I could stop in to "talk" with them this morning... To make a long story short... After filling out a bunch of paper work I drove up to Greensboro today in a 2010 Jeep and drove back in a 2010 F-150 truck... I donno??? I'll keep an open mind but, at least for today, I retired from retirement... B;~) |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Ebbie Date: 03 Apr 13 - 06:09 PM Well, good on you! psssst: Remember to keep your eyes open when traveling through tunnels. |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Charmion Date: 03 Apr 13 - 06:12 PM I never let anyone say I have retired because I didn't quit work; I just quit my gummint job. You were never retired either. You were just -- ah -- "resting". |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Doug Chadwick Date: 03 Apr 13 - 06:19 PM I certainly let people say that I have retired. In fact, I 'retired' a good few months before I quit my job (but don't tell my former employers that). Then again, I was working towards retirement since I was 21. DC |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Bobert Date: 03 Apr 13 - 06:52 PM Eb, Not to fear... No tunnels anywhere I might be asked to drive... To this day I don't know how we made it thru that tunnel and I'm still having nightmares to this very day about doing it... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Bobert Date: 03 Apr 13 - 08:54 PM Well, seems that my un-retirement will last a couple more days as I have agreed to drive a car to Roanoke, Va. on Friday... Gonna be a long day as it's 4.5 hours each way... Couple weird things related to this un-retirement... 1. The Drug Test: Well, I ran outta pot two days ago and only had enough for one smallish hit... So today I had to put this lolli-pop thing in my mouth for 10 minutes and I was sweating it... Like, after all the papers I had filled out and the boss standing there waiting on everything to be finalized (mostly the drug test) so they could put me to work, I was thinkin', "What if I test positve???" Hmmmmm??? There are times in your life when 12 minutes is like 12 years... Once it was finished then it took another 3 minutes for it to read itself... The gals who were trying to get all the paperwork together left the drug test right there on the table where I was sitting... The way it works is that these lines (like a bar graph) appear in a little window and the bars kinda rule out the bad stuff and so I'm watching it and it goes past "Amph" which meant I was okay for amphetamine, then past "Co" for cocaine and the last one I needed to clear was "THC" (pot) and I was watching to see if the bar would get by it... Well, thank God for running out when I did... Can you imagine if I flunked with all them people standing there??? I was thinking of what I would do if I flunked but I ain't gonna share any of those thoughts with ya'll here... Maybe later... 2. The pay??? So when I returned this afternoon I had to take some paperwork back to the drug test - paper work gals and there was this paper that said I was to get paid $72 for the drive... 6 hours and $72 so I asked them just how I was supposed to get paid and they said that the big boys were working on a payment plan for me??? Huh??? Well, seems that have had trouble keeping "drivers" and are down to just two guy who are each at least 10 years older than me so who knows??? Maybe they are gonna try to sweeten the pot for me??? Did I say "pot"??? I'm still out... Never mind... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: michaelr Date: 04 Apr 13 - 12:12 AM Jeez Bob, if ya weren't so stoned all the time ya mighta figured out twelve bucks an hour ain't very good pay. Or do you figure because it's drivin', you're basically just sittin' there? |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: gnu Date: 04 Apr 13 - 07:45 AM 6 hours and $72 Now, just how much is THAT in $HEMP? |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Bobert Date: 04 Apr 13 - 08:48 AM Not much $HEMP, Gn-ze... Maybe I'll get paid more tomorrow seeing as it's going to be a 9 hour day??? Like my poor brother says: "If I sell enough of this stuff at a loss I'll make it up with volume" (???, bro)... B;~) |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: dick greenhaus Date: 04 Apr 13 - 01:48 PM AS someone who has retired at least four times, all I can say is......whatever works. Death is nature's w of telling you to slow down. |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: GUEST Date: 04 Apr 13 - 04:21 PM I've found it hard to retire, after 55 years of working, and I jump at the chance to help a mate out. Oddly, doing things on my own house is different, because I know what I can get away with. This meets with disapproval in certain quarters..... |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: ChanteyLass Date: 04 Apr 13 - 09:30 PM I had an uncle who had that job after he retired. He was one of the worst tail-gaters I ever rode with, but luckily he had great reflexes. |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: ragdall Date: 04 Apr 13 - 10:18 PM Bobert, $12 is not great pay for a man of your qualifications, but at least you're getting paid. I end up doing "favours" for everyone and never see a cent for all the hours I put in. Is the driving keeping you from doing things that you need. or want to do, other than keeping your THC levels up? rags |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Bobert Date: 04 Apr 13 - 10:21 PM Not to worry... I'll keep my THC levels where they need to be... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 05 Apr 13 - 03:57 AM I decided to use my retirement to do Chemistry experiments: I'm working hard at turning beer & wine into urine. RtS |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Bobert Date: 05 Apr 13 - 09:16 PM I may be into some re-careering soon... Got up @ 6 this morning to be at the dealership at 7:30 am, drove to Roanoke, Va, (200 miles) and back getting back home at 6 this evening for $110... B;~) |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 05 Apr 13 - 10:06 PM Yeah, that sux! But no one is going pays you for waking up. :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Bobert Date: 05 Apr 13 - 10:27 PM The thing is that I really don't ***have*** to do this... I mean, I was thinking that if I stick with it then maybe I can buy me an old Volkswagen and maybe a cheapie pop-up camper??? Not sure I need to be doing this but I'll stick with it a while and see??? B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: gnu Date: 06 Apr 13 - 08:13 AM This will sound whatever but that never stopped me before. >;-) Call them and tell them $110 for 12 hours of your time just don't cut the grass and you'll pass on the job. If they don't up the pay I think it's their loss. |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Bobert Date: 06 Apr 13 - 09:01 AM Well, gnze... Ain't that easy... They have this pay plan and everyone that drives for them are contract workers and they have a pool of drivers (all retired guys) they call... If you pass then they call the next guy... I'm okay with the $12 an hour 'cause it ain't like I have a schedule and if I'm busy with something else then it's not like I'm going to be fired for saying so... I like that flexibility... Sure, I could make a lot more money but then I'd be locked into a schedule... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 06 Apr 13 - 09:08 AM If they paid enough to make people happy they would have all the people they need? |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Ebbie Date: 06 Apr 13 - 11:27 AM Does your 'employer' pay the gas and the incidentals, like, food,Bob? |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 06 Apr 13 - 11:29 AM would $110 and a steak dinner make it OK? |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Bobert Date: 06 Apr 13 - 01:56 PM Yes, Eb... They pay for the gas... That's about it but I would expect them to pay for that because I'm am driving their cars... Food??? No, but I would have had to feed myself anyway... All the places they own dealerships are within a 4 hour drive of Charlotte so every drive, there and back, can be done in one day... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Retiring from retirement??? From: Ebbie Date: 07 Apr 13 - 02:17 AM One upside is that you will become very familiar with all the models of the year. By the way, how do you like the Flex? |
