Well, since Jack the Sailor, thinking I was new to Mudcat, kindly posted a "welcome" thread for me, I thought I'd pass it on.

I want to express my appreciation to somebody who's input I always have so much respect for.....somebody who calls him/herself Little Hawk.

I want to invite you to tell us more about yourself....knowing, of course, that you also want to be careful as this is a public forum and you never know who might be reading it.

I've always found Little Hawk's responses to be both well thought out and concise, and, most importantly, always respectful.....and even when expressing strong opinions I never am aware of anybody every being 'labelled' or personally put down.

And maybe I'm also biased because we seem to share some similar opinions on a lot of issues.

I'm interested to hear how others experience Little Hawk's posts.

LH mostly makes sense to me, excluding the pee on your foot therapy, (I find it difficult to get over the mental image of him doing it).

But, there are plenty of nice, respectful folks on here that could likely be mentioned - some who post less, but no less so.

My Wife and I have been to his home. We also had beers together and People-watched in down town Toronto He is a gracious man and a good conversationalist.

If you don't know He is also Chongo Chimp, Penelope Rutledge and Shane something or other AKA Blind Drunk in Blind River.

Ask him about his wiener dogs!

I generally enjoy his intelligence and empathy, he is very sharp on the touchy feely stuff. But Mudcat repeats a lot of topics and views and his views haven't changed much so I kinda skim over a lot of his posts when the deja vu cuts in. He does two things that irritate me mightily. 1. He is so empathetic that he sticks up for people who are deliberately picking fights and he has in the past come on way to many threads on different aspects of US politics to say that both parties are the same, which is interesting a useful first few times but after 20 or thirty times saying the same thing feels like nagging. Sorry about the negative stuff but I like to tell the whole story.

I think he has said some very smart things on the BS: Spiritualism as opposed to religion? thread. I think that topic is his sweet spot.

He does good music, too! And I can always count on him to get riled in defense of his imaginary friends (just like some religionists I know) on the Mother of All BS thread. He is a steadfast contributor to Mom (as we call it) and comes up with first-rate bullshit to keep her entertained and entertaining.

Folks, I didn't ask for this attention, okay? I really do not want to be famous. (was once for half an hour or so, and it was awful)

Also, I'm verging on carpal tunnel here from the keyboard and mouse work, so you may not see me around as much in the near future. I'm seriously trying to quit this daily habit.

I can really empathize with LH's discomfort with the 'half hour of fame'. I felt it when Jack the Sailor did that to me....then decided to just enjoy it and 'ride with it'.   And it was fun while it lasted! So that's how I can justify passing it on without feeling like a sadist.   I think we all deserve to be in the 'spotlight' every once in awhile. Don't you, bobad? And yes, it can feel 'creepy'.

Hopefully if somebody is offended by that, a request can be made to Joe to delete the thread. It certainly isn't my intention to embarrass anybody.....although I accept that embarrassment may end up being a bi-product of even the most noble intention.

Next month I am in Boston for a conference and California in September for the wine. Neither gets close. Anyway, apart from weird ex pat Canadians, what does your state offer?

Little Hawk has kept ME occupied for many years just trying to tone down his broad generalizations of a dozen topics... *wry grin*.

He & I have gone from friendly banter to grumbling jousting to outright war... and back again. He IS an honest, thoughtful commenter on many things (and so is Chongo...sometimes I wonder who is the alter-ego of whom)... now if I could just get him to quit making definitions so broad they become linguistic cotton-candy! ☺

LH is an okay guy with a very boring lifestyle. He don't drink, he don't smoke, he don't spend any time at the bars, he ain't dated any classy dames in years, he reads a lotta boring books about spiritual stuff, he drinks tea with lemon in it, drives no more than 5 mph over the speed limit...ain't been arrested once!

You're confused, Fossil. Notices on buses used to forbid spitting. Notices saying 'No Hawkers' could at one time be seen on people's front gates, 'hawker' being a word for a door-to-door salesman, nothing to do with hawking in the spitting sense.

If we really want to show Little Hawk that we appreciated him, I think we should have a party, with cake and such things. Only thing is, the Elves might come by and try to talk him into going to Valinor. This has happened before.

At one party several years ago, Shane gave the Elves some of that beer that he makes (Shane's beer, incidentally, is one of the reasons that Little Hawk doesn't drink) and one thing led to another, and pretty soon one of the Elves is standing on a table and calling Chongo "The Gorill-ee-ya from Orill-ee-ya". Then someone throws a chair. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has sealed all records so no one quite knows happened after that, but Little Hawk had to pay to get the Elves' car pulled out of Lake Simcoe.

After that, the Elves have tried everything they could think of to get him to move back to Valinor. They've bought him a condo there, and even set him up with the White Rock Girl (LH had to fish her out of Lake Simcoe, too!)

Anyway Little Hawk, if it makes any difference (and it probably doesn't), I think you deserve the "Mudcatter of the Year" award again this year (sorry, Bobert).

Very nice thought to start this thread, and doesn't it make a welcome change from all the nasty bullying and name-calling on some of the other threads? I've always enjoyed reading LH's measured and informed comments. Sounds like an extremely knowledgeable, gentle and wise person.

I think it is a good rule not to have Hawking on the top deck of a bus. How would you get him up there? How would you get him down?

I think wheelchair accessible elevators would be a waste of public funds.

But back to the subject at hand, how can I embarrass, Little Hawk. CarolC sitting next to me drinking coffee, who is way better at compliments than me, says he is smart, funny and fun and that she appreciates his subtle dry wit. I do agree with all of that. I guess I should have said so myself.

Stim - I think you must BE an Orillian! You have such a brilliant grasp of the cultural scene here.

Shane did try making beer a couple of times, but it turned out tasting like week-old piss. No one would drink it. Not even Shane, at least not after the first attempt. They (Shane and Don) ended up trying to give it away and lost a couple of friends in the process.

Will do. They've been busy working on another early retirement plan (Freedom 35 - attempt 211). It involves a brand new scheme: growing dynamite weed on the roof of the Blind River "liberry" and selling it to the locals. Their cover will be to do a community project that provides homes for homeless cats and pigeons. Don is getting his latest girlfriend Donna from Serpent River to fill out the grant application, so the government can help them get this thing off the ground. The library has banned Shane from entering the building due to past improper use of their computers to surf porn sites, but they didn't say anything about him not being allowed on the roof.

Little Hawk-Back in Michigan, where I come from, being compared to Orillians is the highest form of praise. We have elevated drunkeness to high art, drive cars in to lakes(especially frozen ones) and accidentally set mobile homes on fire as a matter of pride. Folks like to say, "We are just like those Canucks, but with way more guns."

This is not an idle boast--a lot of Shane and Don's family moved to Michigan during the late 60's, hoping to be drafted into the US Army. It did not work out, but the stayed on, supporting themselves by selling smuggled Canadian cigarettes, and, in recent years, by running Michigan's famous "Do Something Stupid With A Gun" Festival.

Shane and Don claim not to be related to them, but they drive down every year to join the extended family in November for Deer Hunting Season, and sometimes for Ice Fishing.

It's inspiring to hear that, Stim. People like the McBrides and their relatives, buddies, and peers have to stick together regardless of minor impediments like borderlines, common sense, and the law, mutually praise one another's good judgement, and swap stories about brilliantly cool things they have done while driving borrowed machines across frozen lakes. Little Hawk is a good bloke. While visiting Canadia late last year we didn't meet Chongo (which could have been interesting) or Penelope (don't think we would have been [prim enough for her) or Shane and Don (which would have been mind-blowing I'm sure) but we did get to meet LH, and he is a very generous person.

It's not necessarily the places one gets to while on holidays, it's the people one meets that make for good memories.

Can't say right off if I know any of them. A lots of people come up to work in the woods, Gnu. and It's a lot of em still out there. They come into to the Meijer's Thrifty Acres once a month for Hamburger Helper, Instant Mashed Potatoes, Beer, Kerosene, Ammunition, and Burt Reynolds videos.They're not so bad, if you don't startle them. If'n you don't get between them and their pick-up and you're pretty much ok. You Betcha!

I frequently talk to a homeless bum who hasn't bathed in at least 6 weeks. His name is John, and he's actually a pretty smart guy...used to be in the Royal Canadian air force in his youth and has a lot of good stories about the 50s and 60s and growing up in Cabbagetown. He now lives on the street, I guess...and that must be pretty tough in the cold weather. I wouldn't want to sit next to John on a long bus ride, because he does smell pretty bad, but at the same time I don't discount his humanity.

I got to know John because I volunteer at a free breakfast program one of the churches offers on Sunday morning. We get a lot of the city's homeless and poor people coming in to that.

How John ended up where he is now, I can't say, but I'd guess it was the gradual result of a long series of small events and changes that could happen to any of us if we were there at the time. Knowing that, I talk to John just like I would to anyone else, cos we all face the same stuff one way or another as we collide with the incredible largeness and contrariness of life. You can deny it if you want to, hide behind your white picket fence and pretend you're "safe", but you're not.

I'd definitely sit next to me on a bus ride...if I didn't already know myself so well as to get a little frustrated with the sense of repetition. After all, I'm harmless, a good conversationalist, and basically friendly.

I've so enjoyed this thread......and getting to know Little Hawk and those with whom he 'connects' so much better.

It's been a lot of fun!   I have a lot of laughs as I read these.

I notice that the thread is no longer consistently at the 'top' anymore....so perhaps the 30 minutes of fame is drawing to a conclusion.

When it eventually 'slips' off the radar screen, those who think these kind of threads are a good idea may want to select one of the many other deserving mudcatters. Such as Ed T's "there are plenty of nice, respectful folks on here that could likely be mentioned - some who post less, but no less so".   Sounds like Ed might be the next 'poster'.

Just a thought.

But for now......keep them cards and letters coming.

While I do think that Little Hawk is a wise an gentle person....I also think that there are times that he might be considered to be rather strange.

I too have sinned, MtheGM! I lose my temper now and then with certain people's desire to slag off someone they don't know and never will. They make themselves feel bigger by trying to make someone else look smaller...just like bullies did back in grade school. I hate it. So sometimes I give them a bit of their own nastiness back. To do so is to yield to my own anger...a weakness...and I'd probably be better off just ignoring them. After all, are they gonna change because of anything I said?
