Subject: RE: BS: Got Pluarsy and it Sucks... From: JohnInKansas Date: 06 May 13 - 03:50 PM Not a pleasant way to spend even a day, and recovery isn't often quite that quick. Pleurisy can be just a symptom, and there can be a number of things that might cause it, although often enough it's just a simple "irritation" that will pass with rest and medicines to relieve the pains. A doc can usually rule out the serious things with a simple exam, as it sounds like yours has done; but do watch for any changes while you're in recovery, or an unexpectedly slow healing, just in case some complication might become apparent as you heal. For some people, cold air is a serious aggravation, and excessively dry air slows recovery. Your case may be different, but keeping yourself warm and comfy isn't likely to slow your comeback. Some doctors recommend avoiding a few of our "favorite comforts" so it might be advisable to eat and drink like an "ordinary fool"** for a while until you feel better. If the dancing girls come over to comfort you, you may want to request that they dance slowly to avoid excitement and possible hyperventilation since that hurts. ** = sensible health nut? Take care, whatever you do. John |

From: Ebbie Date: 06 May 13 - 04:52 PM Wanting to know the exact difference between pleurisy and pneumonia I found this: "...inflammation of the pleura that is typically characterized by sudden onset, painful and difficult respiration, and exudation of fluid or fibrinous material into the pleural cavity." Subject: RE: BS: Got Pluarsy and it Sucks... From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 06 May 13 - 05:32 PM Having pleurisy is bad enough, but having pluarsy can damned near kill ya. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got Pluarsy and it Sucks... From: JohnInKansas Date: 06 May 13 - 07:16 PM Pleurisy is just an inflammation of the lung membranes that makes it painful to breath. Pleurisy can occur for "unknown reasons" (idiopathic) or it can be a symptom of a number of diseases such as pneumonia or a whole fistful of other problems. Pneumonia is a fairly specific infection caused by a particular "bug" and pleurisy can be an associated symptom. Any doctor generally will look for symptoms of pneumonia in anyone complaining of pleurisy, but the symptoms are generally clear enough to make an easy distinction between pneumococcal infection and simple irritation. Irritation from ag chemicals is a fairly common cause where such things are around, as Bobert suggests might be the case with his present affliction. In cases where there isn't an obvious cause it can be difficult to find a "reason" but treating the symptoms generally is fairly effective without specifically identifying "whadunnit," since most of the "casual causes" come and go with the seasons. From: Will Fly Date: 07 May 13 - 08:59 AM Long live the Bobster, I'm re-reading Paul Oliver's "Screening The Blues", first published in 1968 - contains a huge amount about the music by a very knowedgeable guy (even though he's English). Subject: RE: BS: Got Pluarsy and it Sucks... From: Rapparee Date: 07 May 13 - 09:44 AM Oh, you read books of color! Fifty Shades of Beige should see you through your illness. It's not very exciting, so it's much like the blues. Then there's Moby Dick, about a white whale; Black Like Me; Riders of the Purple Sage, and of course The Sage of Eric the Red (which is not about some hippie Commie fascist weirdo). You could listen to "The Rainbow Connection" while you read. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got Pluarsy and it Sucks... From: Will Fly Date: 07 May 13 - 10:12 AM Then there's "The Woman In White", and "Blacks, Whites And Blues" (a s/h hardback copy of which will set you back $100 or so)... ... perhaps followed up with a little salad of "How Green Is My Valley". |

Subject: RE: BS: Got Pleurisy and it Sucks... From: Rapparee Date: 07 May 13 - 09:24 PM The Bookmobile will be blocking your driveway daily until you read at least one book PER WEEK in the future. You have one week to surrender; after that librarians are going to start reading to you in shifts -- stuff like Plato and Caesar and Descartes and Pascal -- until you either go mad(der) or give in. You WILL surrender, you know. |

Bobert, Rap is going to send Eiseley down there with the Pocatello Bookmobile to pay you a visit personally. I hear that librarian is packing heat. You don't want to be doing a dance out in the driveway, so submit gracefully. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got Pleurisy and it Sucks... From: Ebbie Date: 08 May 13 - 02:49 AM The way I perceive it, Bobert, is that you read primarily for information. Those of us who read everything from biographies to cereal boxes are helpless; we are caught in the web of verbiage. Worse yet, we don't even want to be free. However. When one on occasion reads for the pure enjoyment, the relish, for the written word, one's world is brighter, not to say bigger. I love being aware of grace in print. |

Subject: RE: BS: Got Pleurisy and it Sucks... From: Rapparee Date: 08 May 13 - 09:46 PM The Director of a library near here was a little old man (not me!), musta been 90 and was all crippled up with arthritis and such. He kept on doing the job because he loved it and believed in it. One day a BIG, NASTY biker, tattoos all over, about 6'8" and none of it fat, came in and slammed some books on the desk. He said, "Little old man, these are OVERDUE! And I ain't gonna pay you no goddam fine!" Well, first of all the little old fella told him to keep his voice down in the library and to stop using such language because children were present. The biker sneered and laughed. The old librarian was angry and he said, "Okay, tough guy. Let's do it the old fashioned way. We'll flip a coin and the winner gets to kick the other guy in the balls. Then the loser gets to kick the first guy in the balls. The one who causes the most pain wins." Well, the biker went for that. I mean, this guy was old, weak, and stove up!! In fact, the biker said, "Shit, you go first, ya dried up old dog turd." And they stood facing each other, the biker with a smirk on his face and his legs wide apart. The Librarian drew himself up to his full height of 5 foot 3 inches and let off a kick that lifted the biker four feet into the air. He came down with a crash, all bent over, in too much pain to even moan or pant. The librarian looked him laying there in a fetal position, his eyes glazing over, and said, "Okay. Now it's your turn." |

Subject: RE: BS: Got Pleurisy and it Sucks... From: Rapparee Date: 08 May 13 - 11:46 PM He has his priorities, you know. He retired a year or so back, and took on a New Mission In Life. Right now he's busy kicking Mixed Martial Arts fools into next week, then tying their hands and feet to each other with one-inch rebar so they don't "play with themselves." He doesn't suffer fools gladly. His name's Henry, by the way. Hank Henry, descended from the guy who invented the Henry rifle. His daddy was so proud of that he actually named him Henry Henry Henry, but you'd best call him either "Mr. Henry" or "Hank" depending on how he's feeling that day. Usually he's Hank, but only if you can prove you've read more books than he has (and that's not easy) or are/were a working librarian. Did I mention that he's memorized the entire Bible (in English, Greek and Latin), everything Shakespeare wrote (including some laundry lists), the entire body of work of the Medieval Meistersingers (in Old German!), and all of Homer, Vergil, Plato, Aristotle, Euripides, Cervantes, Chaucer (including "A Treatise on the Astrolabe")Galileo, Euclid, and Marx (Karl, not Groucho)? Folks say that when he was young he was a damned good cowboy and you didn't want to winter over in a line shack with him because he'd start playing his guitar and singing those old German Lieders until his partner went nuts, broke down the cabin door, and ran screaming through a blizzard or mud or whatever was on the ground. |
