Day-O, Day-ay-ay-O, Dole Bananas hit a lighthouse in Portsmouth. Day-O, Day-ay-ay O, The boat she's holed and is sittin' on the bottom.

Left hand down a bit, left hand -crunch! Nobody's hurt, but she's blockin' up the harbour. Should have gone right, but we're out to lunch, Pity 'bout the light, it was the oldest in the harbour.

Do I detect "Navy Lark" overtones? Quick throw some Ice Cream in and make the BIGGEST banana split in the World!! is that Portsmouth UK or one of the American ones?

UK, it's just been on the news again. The boat hit the rocks at the base of the Nab light at the entrance to the Solent, apparently. Dutch salvage experts are on their way. Could we add some Advocaat, do you think?

Oh, and Micca, you are quite right, Navy Lark it is. What amazes me about the human brain is that within a few seconds of hearing the words banana, boat and Portsmouth, the Banana Boat song arrived, and by the time I got to the verse, the Navy Lark, which I have neither heard nor thought about for years, had joined it. Watch the headlines tomorrow, I bet I'm not the only one!

I don't know about Advocaat(the drink) I suspect they will need Advocaat( the lawyer) befor long. I know what you mean.tho', a juxtaposition of words/phrases and before your very eyes you jave a song/poem.

Naval situation.
From the bridge of the USS....... The watch sees lights dead ahead & notifies the skipper who hails who ever's ahead on the radio & says "this is the Heavy Cruiser the USS.... you are on a collision course with us so change course or well be forced to run you down, please reply ASAP". "This is the ........ Lighthouse, please alter course directly as we have no power to maneuver or prepare to run down a lighthouse".

Did my ears deceive me or has it also got pineapples on board? It also seems that the lighthouse it hit is visible from 14 miles and conditions were clear. "Long range scanners down, cap'n....er, how do you open the viewscreen?"

I started to think about adding verseses and strayed in to jamaica farewell which I think is a different song but for what its worth Dole Banana farewell
Portsmouth way where the Seas are grey
And the sun shines rarely on the mountain top
The took a trip on a Banana Ship
And when they reached Nab Tower they made a stop

Chorus
But It's sad to say we're not under way
For us it may be the end of the day
Our head is down we may be sinking down
In the Spithead approaches to Portsmouth town

There'll be bananas everywhere
and the Cowes on the island will have there fill
from Spithead up to Southampton
and Pineapples floating off Portland bill

Chorus
Down on the Solent you can hear
Sirens screaming as the big tugs they toil
Trying to keep that ship afloat
And the thought of the salvage it makes them smile

Serious thread creep:The Joe Offer for the People's President campaign must be involved. The ship is called Dole America and was scuppered by a lighthouse!
Strictly speaking, I suppose the Nab Tower isn't a lighthouse but it's a bloody big structure as I remember from my boyhood Sea Cadet days when we had steering practice:
"Aim for the Nab Tower and then turn left"
The Navy Larkwasn't far wrong!

Hey Rog there was a "story" current when I was at sea that a small (about 800 tons) ship came out of Avonmouth late at night after everyone had been on the p**s except a first trip young sailor, the skipper told him to steer straight for the Runnelstone lighthouse off Cardiff, and went below for a rest. 4 hours later the ship tried to climb the side of the Runnelstone!! It was lost , all hands saved.

It isn't the same song. They are different. We had them in Singing Together, or at least Jamaica Farewell was in it.

And I am not responsible for the use people make of my parodic outbursts.

"The ship is registered in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia,
and with the Norwegian skipper were Indian officers
and an Oriental crew. The vessel has Costa Rican agents
and is owned by an American bank. "

Wow! mini united nations on board. their simultaneous translation probably broke down.

Hi, wildlone Yeah go for it, I am flattered you think its good enough, if I add more I'll post it, it begs a verse on the lines of not being nabbed on the dole but Dole on the Nab.

During an idle moment today I thought of the other 2 verses (for the Trans-ponders the dole is the colloquiql UK expression for welfare)
Norwegian skipper is in despair
And the Indian officers stand around
The Chinese crew only stand and stare
As the they watch their ship as it runs aground
chorus
The Dole America was the ship
And it hit the Nab off the shipping lane
Today the crew were all on the Dole
And tomorrow their on the dole again
chorus

I'm really glad it wasn't Geest or Fyffes: just been reading about the farmers on the Windwards - they can't take much more. If this free trade business carries on, we may look back on it like the potato blight.
