It starts (I believe) 1.There's a wedding in a wee kirk Just off of Glasgow Green Between a lassie and a Sodger hame on leave ???? And her faither's got a shotgun up his sleeve. 2. And her mother's standin greetin but it is nae from the heart For her daughter is nae really such a rose. Its .... ???? And her corset is caught up in her drawers.. Does anyone have ALL the words? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Happiest Day by Hamish Imlach From: GUEST,kenny Date: 28 May 13 - 06:25 AM 2nd last line in the 2nd verse had something about "she'd had cascara earlier on" - purely from memory of hearing Hamish sing it probably nearly 40 years ago. Not sure I have a recording of the song anymore - might have to leave it to you, Dave. Possibly the only song ever to mention "cascara", and I remember having to look it up in a dictionary. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Happiest Day by Hamish Imlach From: Dave Hanson Date: 28 May 13 - 06:36 AM I've just listened to it, no mention of cascara, unfortunately I can't understand enough of it to be worthwhile posting. Dave H |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Happiest Day by Hamish Imlach From: GUEST,Tom O'Toole Date: 24 Jun 13 - 05:39 AM I found the LP and agree it is hard to decipher, but here is my best guess....... There is a wedding in a wee kirk to the side of Glasgow Green Between a lassie and a soldier home on leave There are Roses and Carnations and Lilies for the bride And her father's got a shotgun up her sleeve And her faither's standin ragin, for the bridegroom's turned up late Paraplegic and no button on his fly With some screw taps and lanlic and a Pakistani mate And they brought a couple of birds along fore by And her mother is sitin greetin but it is nae from the heart For her daughter is not really such a rose. Its not emotion that has moved her but mascara in her eye and her corset is caught up in her drawers. Do take this women to be your lawful wedded life To keep her to death and bitter end Awe for god sake get a move on and get this bloody 'ower And I'll maybe get a pint before the game After, in the evening, after lots of drunken fights To Barlinine the unconscious groom did go While the wife went out on her honeymoon To the labour ward up in Rottenrow. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Happiest Day by Hamish Imlach From: GUEST,kenny Date: 24 Jun 13 - 01:05 PM That would be about right, but I'd think that the 1st word in the 2nd line of the 2nd verse might be "paralytic", not "paraplegic", unless Hamish was making a play on words. The "mascara" reference makes sense, but I absolutely guarantee that when I heard Hamish sing the song in the 80s, he sang about "cascara"in the 3rd verse. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Happiest Day by Hamish Imlach From: GUEST,Tom O'Toole Date: 25 Jun 13 - 03:46 AM Paralytic makes much more sense. I am guessing on the cascara / mascara verse. I am guessing on a lot of it. At least these wedding are less likely to happen. Thanks for your help. |
