A sonar image may point to the wreckage site of Amelia Earhart's plane, the Electra, The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery announced. The nonprofit organization has been on the hunt for the Earhart plane for the last 25 years.
"What we have is something that looks like what we think the expected wreckage should look like right in the place where we expect it to be," Ric Gillespie, TIGHAR's executive director told Yahoo News. "That's what's so enticing about this, it looks different from anything else out there."
The image was taken from a remotely operated vehicle 600 feet below the water off an uninhabited island in the southwestern Pacific republic of Kiribati. It shows, says the TIGHAR website, an "anomaly."

Interesting, and somewhat plausible. What gives me hesitation is that all the recent internet buzz surrounding the bits of evidence on this particular island trace back to this same source, which seems a bit self-serving. Not much corroboration from outside sources.
I hope they are right, it would be quite a find. But comparing the published images with others, like the recent one of a German Dornier on the bottom of the Channel, doesn't inspire much confidence.

If I was rich I'd toss in the 3 million just to stop hearing about Amelia and her f&%$#@& plane.

So far as the image as I can see it, it reminds me a bit of the photos that prove that Noah's ark is still there aground on Mount Ararat, only some of those look more like a boat than this looks like a plane. I have heard quite a bit about what sounds like a legitimate search with a very studied approach, so I'll grant them some credibility. The "tune in next year for further news" is frustrating.

They'll never find that plane. It's gone by now. Get real. That area of the world is dominated by the Pacific which is incredibly huge. The remnants of that plane are scattered throughout and buried in mud, silt and coral. The incident below happened in '92 on Lake Superior and they have never found one bit of wreckage in all these years. What are the chances they are going to find Earhart's plane?

Hey, Futwick, people enjoy this kinda thing, see? It sparks their curiosity. They wanta know what happened, where, when, exactly how? You got a problem with that? If ya do, write me about it, and I'll see if I can come up with a way to set yer mind at ease...providin' you pay me the goin' rate.

$250 an hour.

I see humour--or a sense thereo--needs rejuvenation in Orillia.

As does the downtown strip, Guest. It's a sad sight, lemme tell ya. The average storefront survives for maybe 3 years.

"... we hope that she'll fly back again some day..."
don't we? That would be something.
Great song. Once, while singing "Amelia's Last Flight" with my banjo, I was given a five dollar note by a nun. I was busking in Bourke Street in Melbourne. The chorus is angelic. Maybe that was why.
OR was it actually Amelia herself hiding out in disguse. I've always wondered.

So much depends upon environmental factors that I think the organization is correct in its guarded analysis: "It's an anomaly."

Yes, it would be nice to put the question to a final rest but until someone does it will continue to intrigue people.

She's not lost, just very late.

Anyway, would you really want luggage named after her?

Aw, I still like to imagine that Amelia and Richard Halliburton (disappeared sailing a Chinese junk across the Pacific trying to reach the 1939 World's Fair) are living on some yet-undiscovered island out there. Probably age is catching up on them, though, unless Shangri-la rules apply...

I'd like to know if she really was on a spy mission for FDR.

I have a car that was built the year she blew it.

Every 6 months, another wonderful revelation.

The track record is not good.

I'm from Missouri on this one.
