Actually, this is more like now. It seems 911 jolted him out if his radical phase:

My People

Also, I've mispelled his name. It's Yusuf.

You can call him anything you want, his name is Not Yusuf Islam, neither is it Cat Stevens, he was born of Cypriot parents, not even a muslim, when he converted to Islam it didn't stop him collecting the royalties from his records, to donate to kill a British citzen Salman Rushdie.

If he loves it so much he should fuck off and live a muslim country.

A waste of space as a human being.

I know what you mean. Ditching music to devote oneself to a religion that issues death threats to non-believers? That sounds rather depressing. You know what I think it is? I think some people will go to extreme lengths to distinguish themselves. I think Cat wanted to be different.

Yusuf apologized to the world for the radical remarks he made in the late 70's and began preaching peace after 911. Then the humanitarian awards started raining down from the heavens! It kind of reminds me of certain former members of high profile street gangs -doing mea culpa after destroying innocent lives, writing books and being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Shouldn't be that easy for him.

All I know is that musicians have a lot of influence over people, especially young people. They are like shamans almost. I remember my older sister was a huge fan of Cat Stevens. She was very impressed by his decision to convert to Islam. That made him seem more committed to spirituality than your average musician. There was some strong appeal there.

On another thread someone posted a horrifying video of a radical Islamic protest in Britain where a very pretty young woman wearing a perfectly tasteful dress was asked who she wanted to seduce -by a woman covered from head to toe in a burqua. Unbelievable. In Pakistan, dress code violators are routinely attacked with acid and sometimes raped and killed!

I think they should send the radical MEN to live in Muslim countries. Within six months the women will be living their lives as free citizens. Of course, I'm only making a point here. It's not a practical solution. And I could be wrong. Indoctrination can go pretty deep.

Wow. Only 24 years ago.
Yusuf Islam Wants to See Salman Rushdie Burnt, Right?

Because of imaginary scenarios set by courthouse TV interviewers, in 1989 I was drawn into making stupid and offensive jokes about Rushdie on a program called, 'Hypotheticals'; however they were meant to lighten the moment and raise a smile – as good ol' British sense of humor occasionally is known to do unfortunately for me it didn't.

In 1989, during the heat and height of the Satanic Verses controversy, I was silly enough to accept appearing on a program called 'Hypotheticals' which posed imaginary scenarios by a well-versed (what if?) barrister, Geoffrey Robertson QC. I foolishly made light of certain provocative questions. When asked what I'd do if Salman Rushdie entered a restaurant in which I was eating, I said, I would probably call up Ayatollah Khomeini, and, rather than go to a demonstration to burn an effigy of the author, I jokingly said I would have preferred that it'd be the real thing쳌.

Criticize me for my bad taste, in hindsight, I agree. But these comments were part of a well-known British national trait; a touch of dry humor on my part.
...
Certainly I regret giving those sorts of responses now. However, it must be noted that the final edit of the program was made to look extremely serious; hardly any laughs were left in and much common sense was savagely cut out. Most of the Muslim participants in the program wrote in and complained about the narrow and selective use of their comments, surreptitiously selected out of the 3-hour long recording of the debate. But the edit was not in our hands. Balanced arguments were cut out and the most sensational quotes, preserved.
...

All fun and games until somebody loses an eye, then it's hilarious right? If Rushdie had turned up dead, how funny would it be then?

Steven showed exceptionally poor judgement, now the caricature he was portraying has materialized in earnest...

Although I tend to be that way myself on ocassion. Something I think is funny sails over the heads of people and I am prompty villianized and shamed by a mob of hypocritical ignorami.

My advice to all: Never make "humorous" quips that require a page long disclaimer (that most will never hear about) further down the line.

Jeri, that's an awesome site, btw, thanks for turning me on to it!

You're welcome.
He made the mistake of thinking people were smart enough to understand what he was saying, and the editors would be fair. I suppose it just demonstrates that assholes looking for support for their hatred aren't all that intelligent, and will stoop to any lengths to pass it on to others.

But do you really think that most Muslim people are that moderate and articulate? I'm glad Yusuf's daughters are educated and career oriented. I'm sorry, but those are really Western ideals for women. It just shows how religious writings can be bent to the will of the interpreter.

There are indeed Jewish and Christian sects in which women adopt ultra-modest dress codes, but to my knowledge, these sects have not engaged in atrocities against women on the basis of non-compliance with religious codes for many, many centuries. I don't want to get dragged back to the stone age, do you? On the streets of Pakistan, all you need are four witnesses to condemn a woman.

Many people do not know the following story. This is where Daniel, the first Jewish lawyer, raised the burden of proof for condemning a woman:

Book of Susannah

That's called social evolution. Who wants to go back?

One of my observations is that here in America (and especially living about 15 miles from a maximum security correctional facility in one direction and about 7 or 8 miles from a medium security correctional facility in another) is that Islam thrives in the prison system. I have been told that for a white man entering the prison system, there are basically two survival strategies, two ways to shield oneself from victimization from gangs. Either join the White Supremicists or convert to Islam. And eventhough they never come out of prison anywhere near as well versed as our friend Cat, they do come out ANTI-SEMITIC! That's the one thing they do seem to pick up. And I'm sick of it.

You know why I think anti-Semitism does so well in prison? Because, first of all, it's an ideology that works well for people who tend to blame others for their own bullshit. Secondly, there are no Jews there. You don't have to make friends with one to trade a smoke for a package of Ramen noodles :-)

Blue walls are pretty.

I really like this song, and you don't even have to be religious to like it: In the End. It basically says you'll be judged/known/remembered because of what you do in life.

Here's the lyrics:

In the End

You can't bargain with the truth
'Cause whether you're right or you're wrong
We're gonna know what you've done
We're gonna see where you belong in the end

You can't bargain with the truth
'Cause whether you are black or you're white
We're gonna know who's right
We're gonna see you in the light in the end

Oh and every little thing you do
You better know it's coming back to you

You can't bargain with the truth
'Cause one day you're gonna die
And good's going high
And evil's going down in the end

You can't bargain with the truth
'Cause whether you're old or young
We're gonna see what you've done
There'll be nowhere else to run in the end

You can't bargain with the truth
'Cause whether you're rich or you're poor
You're gonna meet at the same door
You're gonna know the real score in the end

And if you want to help your fellow man
You better start with what is in your hand

You can't bargain with the truth
'Cause whether you're right or you're wrong
We're gonna know what you've done
We're gonna see where you belong in the end

You can't bargain with the truth
'Cause if the world you chose
No further than your nose
Will be where the doors will close in the end

You can't bargain with the truth
'Cause for those who were deceived
There'll be no reprieve
Or there'll be no time to believe in the end

Oh with every little thing you do
You better know it's coming back to you

You can't bargain with the truth
'Cause one day you're gonna die
And good's going high
And evil's going down in the end

As much as I don't embrace the teachings of Islam, this is incredibly beautiful:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-L-GOHa5-YQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Perfect pitch... but just the same, the Wailing Wall is not the spot Muhammed tethered his winged-horse Buraq. That's malarky worthy of Norse or Greek mythology :-)

Thanks. I think I like his piano playing more than his guitar playing. As for his music, I like the older stuff. Probably because I'm not religious and it seems he wrote more about inter-personal relationships. I know it's about what matters to him, and even back then he seemed to be searching for something, but his insight into people required vulnerability and was more interesting to me.
Ah well, it is what it is.

I like him in all his personas. Except maybe the cowboy. Can't remember the song - Matthew and Son? Anyway. I believe his comments about the Salman Rushdie affair were ms-interpreted. It was a very clever move to include a cover of 'Don't let me be misunderstood' on An Other Cup. I also find the east/west fusion on that album very pleasant indeed. Hopefully the fusion of peoples will be just as rewarding :-)

Anyway, must go to the loo. I can't keep it in...

His songs meant a great deal to me when I dropped out of school and hit the road on my motorcycle. Particularly "On the Road to Find Out"

As for his turn to Islam, most of it I regard as his own business.

On a side note, one of the great albums of history, "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" consists of various religious Islamic chants, radio proselytizers, sampled and mixed by Davied Byrne and Brian Eno.
