I kinda wonder why I don't read any comment from our friends in Maine about the current 'leadership'... especially the governor and his appointment to the Dept. of "Environmental Protection". I cannot imagine living under such a man without attempts to recall him.

my, oh my

I found a clip of LePage talkin to the press. Dunno if that was what I was suppose to see but is there any chance we can clone that guy and put him in charge of everything? That there be my kinda guy! I just got a gut feelin that there is an honest politician.

Honest? I can name you 'honest' guys who would scare you witless. LePage scares ME.. like the governors of Wisconsin, Texas, Arizona, Florida and Virginia... to name just the worst.

Look.. the man is ORDERING all his spokespeople not to deal ...ever... about anything...with 3 of the largest papers in Maine because they keep publishing 'interesting' stuff about him and his methods.

I'm with gnu. Couldn't tell what the OP was talking about since the link went to a "front page" with about 30 different headlines.

IS THIS WHAT YOU MEANT?

It's kinda crude, but I can't tell whether it's justified without knowing a lot more about Maine politics.

That's the clip I saw, JiK. That clip is all I know about. All I know is that I saw a guy who was really pissed off and telling the press exactly that and what, why and who. As for his "crude remarks", apparently he feels the people of Maine are takin up it the ass and he said so - on camera. I like the guy... so far.

This man is far from being an honest politician. He flat out lied about his ties to the Tea Party during the election and has been telling porkies ever since. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.

He's a petulant bully - if he can't get his own way he sulks. A bi-party committee managed to work out the budget but he doesn't like it and would be prepared for a statewide shutdown rather than pass it. Hopefully his veto will be countermanded but we'll have to wait and see.

He is also crude - suggested that one organisation should "kiss my ass", said that he would say to the President of the United States "get out of my state" then there's the latest bit of charm offensive, involving the Vaseline remark and his personal insults to another politician. This man never seems to engage brain before opening mouth - he brings the office of Governor into a state of absolute disrepair.

He now has effectively placed a gag order on his staff, who are not permitted to speak to the three main newspapers in the state because he thinks they are treating him unfairly. Anyone who speaks against him is wrong - even when all they are doing is expressing an opinion. He seems to think that being Governor allows him to use the state as his own private fiefdom.

He only got the office because a failed Democratic candidate stood as an independent and split the vote. Unfortunately that may happen again next year, with the danger that, once again, this boorish fool will be relected by a minority of voters.

Governor LePURGE . It would be hard for me to say what I really think of him here without reverting to my old sea going lingo. I'm reminded of Winston Churchill when he insulted someone, "He has given sodomy a bad name."

LePurge lied about his "Adopted black son". bollox! that boy is the son of his caddy!
He has made a laughing stock of my state and I would love to have 5 minutes in the wood shed with this excuse for a Governor.

Remember when Nixon said If the president does it, it's not illegal? well that's this clown. I hope he keeps it up; Maine has more democrats than republicans, and, I believe that the republicans will support Mike Michaud in the next election.

So, mr. le purge, fire away, dig your own grave with your mouth.

You can lead a voter to the polls, but you can't make him think.

There are people who admire this clown's outspokenness and are able to not see by that. Ok, granted that he speaks his mind; the problem is what's in that mind.
Tells the president to go to hell
Tells the Naacp kiss my ass.
That is an uncouth, lying bully. By far the worst Governor Maine ever had.

Thank you Jacqui & Kendall. I am pleased to hear that you are quite aware of the depths of the problem.

And I really should have remembered Brownback and added Kansas to my list above.

The 'Tea Party' and its related 'movements' (I use that term in all its levels of meaning) is growing in odd places like random cancers. I never thought that hate & ignorance & prejudice could work out a system to eat away at basic laws & institutions in this country. I wonder IF the overall evil plan is being orchestrated or is just patchwork, copycat nastiness.

...and yes, Chris Hayes and Rachael are a good window to what's really going on. Add Lawrence O'Donnell later and you get his personal understanding of how the Senate works.

(Chris Matthews is clever... if he'd only shut up and let someone else finish an answer.)

I think as you move into the "hinterlands" the Tea Baggers are well represented. In most Midwestern states they have, in one form or another, taken over state legislatures and executive branches. Some weaker, some stronger, but they are there as members of the GOP with bagger influences such as Scott Walker in Wisconsin and to a lesser degree, John Kasich in Ohio.

Outside the cities the GOP/baggers do pretty well. Obama carried Ohio based on the 3C cities as the rest of the state was bright red. The Ohio legislature has passed and are working on passing all of the anti-woman, anti-choice legislation they can muster. We have one very progressive Senator in Sherrod Brown but the other is a lame ass, Rob Portman.

All across the country except in some cities, the bagger influence is pretty strong. It is no wonder that they are standing against any immigration laws short of stopping any and all completely! Pretty sad state of affairs...........

Bill, let me ask you, do you think he talks a lot because he's passionate?

Well, if he is passionate that can be good but it makes the interviews distracting. Know what I mean?

Actually it isn't so much the interviews as the opinions of his guests that he walks on worst.

Have you noticed though that he he often steps on the good guys more as he wants them on his side?

Here's my point though, if you don't let your guest speak, I think it demeans them and the show as well..........

Your thoughts?

Pat...I have no doubt he IS passionate, but I really think his brain works so fast his mouth is trying valiantly to keep up and he ends up replying to himself as others try to answer.
He really does seem to thrive on those who slip in an "I agree with you, Chris.." as part of their reply.

I know a couple of people whose brains churn out various 'output' in similar ways, but they aren't on national TV. It is simply hard for them to restrain the impulse to say almost everything they are thinking. Matthews at least has 'partial' control over the flow, else he'd not be able to function in his job at all.

(and I think that Sherrod Brown is one of the few bright spots in Ohio politics)

I fear that the average tea bagger reacts instead of thinking. They lump all welfare recipients into one lump and condemn them all.

"Stereotypes afford us the luxury of not thinking; but, in time they will extract the PRICE of our not thinking". (Jean Harris, author of A Stranger In Two Worlds)

Exactly, Kendall....

I don't LIKE the idea of creating processes to push the thinking of others into MY preferred channels, but THEY think it is justified and ordained. The temptation to "fight fire with fire" is pretty strong... except I'd be hindered by reason, and wouldn't do a very good job. It's much easier when you have no qualms about proselytizing.

Copy and paste from the Portland Press Herald - the paper that LePage reckons is being nasty to him (poor little lamb!)

Bill Nemitz: Governor no longer amusing

Never have I been so happy I no longer have young children.

And never have I felt more sympathy for those who do.

"Mommy," little tykes all over Maine are asking right about now, "how come Governor LePage is talking about Vaseline?"

(Suggested response: "Because he's a moron, dear. Now turn off the TV before he does it again.")

Once again, weary Mainers, let's go to the tape ...

Late Thursday morning, in an apparent last-ditch attempt to derail Maine's next two-year budget, LePage gathered with a small band of his tea party disciples to promise he'll veto the $6.3 billion spending package.

No surprise there.

His remarks drew a quick response from Sen. Troy Jackson, D-Allagash, the assistant Senate majority leader. Observed Jackson, "I think (LePage) realizes we have the (Republican) votes to override him" on the budget veto.

Again, nothing you wouldn't expect to hear as LePage and the Legislature hurtle toward their long-anticipated showdown next week.

Back to LePage.

"Senator Jackson claims to be for the people," he told WMTW-TV reporter Paul Merrill. "But he's the first one to give it to the people without providing Vaseline."

How easy it would be to take that snippet and run with it.

Like LePage's other one-liners over the past few years -- calling the IRS the "new Gestapo" ... telling the NAACP to "kiss my butt"... promising to tell President Obama to "go to hell" -- this one has to be worth at least a week of punch lines, right?

Wrong.

There's simply nothing funny about Maine's chief executive, on camera for the whole world to see, reducing a longtime legislator's public service to a crude sexual metaphor.

Nor is there anything humorous about LePage's loyal supporters undoubtedly celebrating this kind of bile as the hallmark of a man "who tells it like it is."

And it's nothing short of pathetic that Maine's Republican Party -- you know, the one that claims to stand for family values -- lacks the common decency to denounce the ignoramus whose garbage mouth disgraces not just his party, but his entire state.

Even LePage knew he'd crossed the line this time. Moments after the Vaseline remark, he returned to the camera not to take responsibility for his own boorishness, but (as usual) to blame others for it.

"Dammit, that comment is not politically correct," LePage told WMTW's Merrill. "But we got to understand who this man (Jackson) is. This man is a bad person. He doesn't only have no brains, he has a black heart."

That would be the same Troy Jackson who last month fought back tears as he spoke on the Senate floor about two friends who had heart disease just as he did -- only they died for lack of health insurance.

"It's ... embarrassment that I had health insurance and they didn't," Jackson told his hushed colleagues that day. "It's embarrassment that I'm alive and they didn't have that opportunity."

That's a "black heart," Governor? And now that you've vetoed the Medicaid expansion for which Jackson was pleading, what's inside your chest -- a lump of pure Maine granite?

Amazingly, LePage wasn't finished. After complaining that the Legislature's leaders are "smoking the Maine people and the Maine people are buying it," he went after Jackson, a logger by trade, one more time for good measure.

"People like Troy Jackson, they ought to go back in the woods and cut trees and let somebody with a brain come down here and do some work," he snarled.

Remember that next time you head to the polls, proud Mainers who work in the woods. Your governor just said you lack the brains to do anything but cut trees.

I can hear the LePage apologists already. "It's no big deal," they'll say. "The governor is a passionate man and his temper momentarily got the best of him."

Oh, really? Then explain why, after reporter Merrill flat-out warned him the Vaseline remark "is going to offend some people," LePage came back a third time to the microphone and replied, "Good! It ought to! Because I've been taking it for two years!"

Hear that, Mom? Hear that, Dad? Your governor thinks it's "good" that he just forced you to explain to Junior what Vaseline has to do (or not) with the functioning of Maine's state government.

And if that upsets you, LePage is fine with that too. In fact, he thinks you "ought to" be offended.

Thursday evening, as news of LePage's latest -- and by far greatest -- roll through the gutter flashed on TV screens all over Maine, WCSH anchor Pat Callaghan felt compelled to preface the story during his 5:30 p.m. newscast with this warning:

"We're about to put on screen what the governor said in response (to Jackson) and some of our viewers who may find it distasteful may want to hit the mute button and turn away for the next 20 seconds or so."

Think about that, fellow citizens. Your local news is now warning, before reporting on what your governor said today in the normal conduct of his duties, that you might want to block your eyes and turn down the volume.

What's next? A 10-second delay every time LePage opens his mouth lest the TV stations run afoul of the FCC?

The simple truth is that LePage is not and never will be the leader he purports to be.

He's a thug, far more suited to the urban streets he once roamed than the halls of government he now disgraces.

He's also a coward. Rather than even attempt to do the difficult job that a minority of Mainers elected him to do, he hides behind his ignorance and, when push comes to shove, shames his entire state with an off-the-cuff obscenity.

Not politically correct, Governor? How about, "I'm truly sorry. I forgot there are children out there who might hear me. Please accept my deepest apology."

Then, for once in your life, shut up.

LePage really stuck his foot in his enormous mouth this time. Beyond the Vaseline comment, he suggested that the gentleman he disagreed with is stupid and should go back to the woods to cut lumber. Not a clever remark given that most of his contingency works in the woods and on the ocean with their hands.
Unfortunately, I work with people who feel he represents the "real" Maine - stubborn, hard headed and not about to be told what to do.
Great way to get things done - walk out when you don't get your own way. If he vetoes the budget, the state will have to shut down. We'll see.
Like Jacqui, I worry that the Dems will not get behind a single candidate, Cutler will run Independent and LePage will spend another term in Augusta.
I have to admit - all this talk about ass kissing and vaseline makes me wonder what our governor spends most of time contemplating.

I'm less worried that LePURGE will get another term; the republicans may give him lip service, but they are decent folks and in the privacy of the voting booth they will do the right thing and send this Ape to the scrap heap of worthless broken down hack politicians.
I believe we are seeing the end of the republican party as we have known it. Twilight for the Clods.

That's how we feel about LePage's blunders.

Then he hauls out his "adopted" black son and the fact that he was homeless as a child. Not sure why this should make it OK for him to abuse everyone who disagrees with him but...

The shame of it is, he often has good plans and good intentions but if anyone questions them, he goes off like a WWF wrestler who has been given "the table".

The comparison of LePage and Chris Christie is a bit off the mark, IMHO. I don't think a lot of Christie's politics, to be sure, and he does indeed mouth off too much at times, but at least he's not usually vulgar, and he's willing to admit that people on the other side of the political fence may have some worthwhile attributes. LePage is just a boor.

Nancy, Christie has gone off on anyone who questions him and done his best to silence and/or destroy them. The reason you don't hear about his vulgarity is that he has very solid control of his personal press corps.

If you look at his YouTube collection, a new one or two or which appears after almost any public appearance, you would think he is the soul of reasonableness instead of a ham handed bully. I will give you that he often appears to be bipartisan--within his agenda.

Greg, what happened was, that prick, Lepurge when he ran didn't display any of those crude aspects. He was just another republican, most of them have been regular decent people. Then, an unknown democrat got into the race, then an independent who thought he was another Angus King jumped in and the race was split into three parts. What blew my mind was something he did in his early days in office: he had a mural removed from the Dept. of Labor saying it was "too anti-business" (!).

A few months later I was attending a centennial event for the Bread and Roses strike in Lawrence, MA and there was the mural on display with a sign saying "This mural is in exile".

LePage is a dangerous man IMO. If he says the things he says in public, what must he be saying in private and thinking?

I wrote to him and asked "What did you expect to see in the dept. of labor? a statue of Ken Lay, Bernie Madoff or some other republican thief"? No answer.
I'd love to tangle with this ape.

I am glad the mural has been rescued from the hands of this Philistine.
