Julia one day, Kevin the next.. just a day in the life of the Aussie voter ..

The return of Rudd - I will survive...

and comment from a women in Rudd's electorate:

the word on political rumbles in Oz, June 2013

None of this soap opera seems have anything to do with politics... Like an Australian rewrite of Iolanthe.

She wasn't exactly inspirational though, was she? That po-face and the sound of that dreadful voice,    s-p-e-a-k-I-n-g    r-e-a-l-l-y.    s-l-o-w-l-y.    s-o.    t-h-e    i-d-i-o-t-s    c-o-u-l-d.    u-n-d-e-r-s-t-a-n-d    was a real channel-switcher every time she came on. For me at least.

"They were hard shoes to fill but that was partly since she had helped pour the concrete into them."

Sounds less like "Iolanthe" and more "Coriolanus" or one of those other upbeat plays where virtually the whole cast perishes before the final curtain.

But it certainly does, as Kevin notes, eliminate the need for any other soap opera--this one must be far more fascinatlng.

Is it possible to govern in a soap opera?

The version of "I Will Survive" was great--though I'm sure I missed most of the symbolism.
For instance, what was the faucet about?

the second appearance of the faucet (= tap in Ozspeak) was followed by the line "I have all my leaks to give"

other in-phrases were the reference to "buried & cremated" with the pic of the headstone. His political enemy, Tony Abbott leader of the Opposition referred one of to his (Abbott's) predecessor's most unpopular policies as buried & cremated.

The sauce bottles refer to one of Kevin Rudd's most memorable phrases. He was employed in Dept of Foreign affairs for all? of his career & is a very formal person, so tried to lighten up by using a colloquial phrase - but get it wrong, referring to shaking rather than sucking the sauce bottle.

Krudd tries to be hip, using what he thinks of as 'in' phrases.....see the sauce bottle, above. He often fails.

On tonight's news he was glad-handing round Springwood in the Blue Mountains, and he was wearing a red tie - obviously Therese had put out something other than blue for him to wear, for a change.

What is it with that man? Doesn't he trust anyone? Two days back in the job and he is already planning the next OS trip, to Indonesia. We have a Foreign Minister, what's wrong with him going? Krudd was never in the country, last time round.

Backwoodsman, I totally agree. That voice was a channel-switcher for me too.

And I think that maybe we'll get the pollies back into running the country now, instead of just running each other through with knives. That'll be nice for a change.

Helen

It's been a difficult time since the last election - hung parliament, negotiated agreement with independents, and Julia G passed more legislation than any other PM.

The media mud and arrows flying in her direction, from inside and outside the Labor party have been appalling. She's handled it with strength, but she's also been a tough PM - reducing the single parents' benefit was a kick in the guts for the mostly female single parents around the country.

Freda, you can't help wondering if it had been a bloke who replaced Krudd first time round, instead of a woman......would he have been treated in the media and by his so-called colleagues the way Julia was?

Somehow I don't think so......

I agree, Jennie, her treatment by the media and political bovver boys was disgusting. I don't see any male PM who has ever been subject to such personal attacks. It's depressing to see, but she handled it with class.
