Subject: BS: What's the deal with Dalziel? From: michaelr Date: 06 Jul 13 - 06:01 PM I'm curious as to the origin of the name Dalziel (from the BBC mystery series "Dalziel and Pascoe") which is pronounced "Deal". |

Subject: RE: BS: What's the deal with Dalziel? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 06 Jul 13 - 07:32 PM First recorded in 1259, from the barony of Dalzell in Lanarkshire, according to Wiki. The name is an anglicisation of the Gaelic Dail-gheal (bright dale). Pronounced dee-EL. Dalziel and Pascoe is a favorite series of mine. |
Subject: RE: BS: What's the deal with Dalziel? From: Manitas_at_home Date: 07 Jul 13 - 02:06 AM The 'z' isn't really a 'z' but a form of 'g' (yogh?) that has been mistaken for a long 'z'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yogh |
Subject: RE: BS: What's the deal with Dalziel? From: MGM·Lion Date: 07 Jul 13 - 03:08 AM The name Dalyell [as in the long-serving Scottish MP Tam Dalyell] is somewhat similarly pronounced, tho nearer to Dɘ-yell. ~M~ |

Subject: RE: BS: What's the deal with Dalziel? From: leeneia Date: 07 Jul 13 - 09:35 AM Thanks, Manitas, for the explanation about the z. I remember those funny-looking g's from my course in medieval literature. I read all the Dalziel-Pascoe mysteries and have enjoyed them. Remember the two Bridget Jones novels? I never believed that they were actually written by the overly-pretty aerobics instructor who appeared on the book jacket. They were written by Ellie Pascoe. (As a Detective Inspector's wife, she needed to maintain her privacy.) |
