Subject: BS: classic William Shatner fighting moves From: Little Hawk Date: 24 Aug 13 - 10:12 AM In this video can be seen the very best of William Shatner's classic fighting moves, such as... The neck chop! The flying kick! The snap roll! The double ear slap! The thigh scissors! The devastating double punch! And...you also get to see, in retrospect, how incredibly tacky and dreadful the scenes, costumes, and sets from this once-rather-cool 1960s sci-fi show appear now, over 40 years later. My Gawd...what were they thinking of????????? |
Subject: RE: BS: classic William Shatner fighting moves From: GUEST,Marianne S. Date: 24 Aug 13 - 11:01 AM They were thinking they would be judged by the standards of their time. I doubt they expected to be a long-lived cult and probably never thought of computer graphics. In another 40 years people will be relaxing on their holodecks and wondering why people had been so impressed with Avatar. |
Subject: RE: BS: classic William Shatner fighting moves From: Little Hawk Date: 24 Aug 13 - 11:27 AM Yeah. No doubt. They were also limited by working within a fairly tight budget, I imagine. Star Trek was considerably beyond previous TV sci-fi shows of the 60s and before, not so much in its special effects, but in a philosophical sense. Gene Rodenberry worked some pretty interesting stuff into the plots of some of the shows. |

Subject: RE: BS: classic William Shatner fighting moves From: GUEST Date: 24 Aug 13 - 12:53 PM The best fighting move of all is... not being there... ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: classic William Shatner fighting moves From: DMcG Date: 24 Aug 13 - 12:59 PM While the acting is hardly RADA standard, some of the older story lines are quite interesting. I watched one a little while ago called "Plato's stepchildren" which draws quite heavily on Plato's writings (ok, at a fairly simplistic level.) There was quite a nice little joke for those who know a little Plato that one of the character's first appearances was as a shadow on a wall. Anyway, apart from that, it was interesting to see that the writers had drawn on such a classic source. I wonder if any episodes in the last 20 years did? |

Subject: RE: BS: classic William Shatner fighting moves From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 Aug 13 - 08:40 PM It was great fun, and quite engaging. But surely no one thought it "cool", any more than Doctor Who? It's hard to think back all those years, but I'm certain I never did, and I never missed watching it if I could help it. |
Subject: RE: BS: classic William Shatner fighting moves From: Little Hawk Date: 25 Aug 13 - 08:28 AM To the contrary, many thought the show very cool, mainly due to the presence of Mr Spock who had his own brand of erudite coolness. Legions of women fantasized about him, you know....and a fair number fantasized about Captain Kirk too. Then there was Uhura for the men to fantasize about. Star Trek also featured the first interracial kiss on prime time TV, when Captain Kirk kissed Uhura in one episode...not only very cool for the time, but quite controversial. |
Subject: RE: BS: classic William Shatner fighting moves From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 26 Aug 13 - 03:25 AM At the time I was deeply into written SF and I thought that Star Trek was decidedly uncool - just another soap opera. |
Subject: RE: BS: classic William Shatner fighting moves From: Dave Hanson Date: 26 Aug 13 - 03:55 AM Shatners main fighting move was ' phasers on stun ' Dave H |
Subject: RE: BS: classic William Shatner fighting moves From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 26 Aug 13 - 01:19 PM I somehow suspect there may have been a difference in the way people over here saw the original Star Trek... |
Subject: RE: BS: classic William Shatner fighting moves From: gnu Date: 26 Aug 13 - 01:54 PM When I was a lad at uni, we viewed Star Trek as we did The Waltons. 50 young men watching one TV, most drinking or smoked up or both. The comments from the group were great entertainment. Ahhhh... fond memories. |
Subject: RE: BS: classic William Shatner fighting moves From: Little Hawk Date: 26 Aug 13 - 02:23 PM It was uncool compared to written SF, yes...but fairly cool compared to previous TV SF, most of which had been utterly dreadful. |
