Subject: RE: BS: Why I'm not gone/still here! From: frogprince Date: 24 Sep 13 - 11:57 AM Some years ago, I stumbled into here looking for the words to a dumb song. I soon found a bunch of people saying some things that made me laugh my butt off, some things that made me really think, and some things that went right to my heart. Last year a whole bunch of very good people here helped me hang in thru some of the darkest days of my life. I see more than enough recently that makes me shake my head, if not just about tear my hair out. But the positive content is nowhere near completely gone. Sorry folks, but I've never really considered leaving yet. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I'm not gone/still here! From: jacqui.c Date: 24 Sep 13 - 01:02 PM i don't post as much as I used to - life and Facebook get in the way, but I do still lurk daily to see what is going on in all sorts of ways. I must admit that I do find quite a few of the BS threads to be rather tiring - so much hostility does not suit me. For myself, I am well aware that everything that gets onto the internet is pretty well there for keeps and I would rather not put up some piece of nastiness that someone might be able to access in the future. My kids, I think, still come here to see what I might be up to and I would hate for them to see, from me, the sort of unpleasantness that is happening right now. There are things I might think, and maybe say to a very small group of like minded idiots (I can think of two, maybe three people whose demons play well with mine) but, for the main part, I can't see the point in demeaning myself by sinking to the level of taking personal written pot shots at those who do not share my views. I don't have any religious belief per se but, if that floats your boat, fine. Everyone is entitled to their own point of view on religion, politics, etc but maybe there should be a bit more respect for other people's points of view. I've always believed that, when one party in a discussion gets down to personal abuse they have lost. If it is not possible to discuss something in a civilised manner then just agree to disagree and move on. trading insults, to me, shows an immature mind set. So, I stay on Mudcat, stay out of the threads that become unpleasant and just count myself lucky that, as a result of this site, I have dear friends that I would not otherwise have met (including a husband) and a lot of friends that I haven't yet met. |

From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 24 Sep 13 - 01:39 PM As a very old biddy, I love sitting at my computer browsing through the threads and reading all the many ideas, viewpoints and opinions. I don't much like some of the more spiteful posts, but like you jacquic, I just ignore them. I've enjoyed many interesting discussions and learnt a lot, about music and all sorts of things from the BS section. I really like most of the posters; many of them are kind, funny, informed and intelligent. I can't see myself staying away. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I'm not gone/still here! From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Sep 13 - 09:53 PM Every few years, the editors at the Folknik newsletter of the San Francisco Folk Music Club, ask me to write a letter about Mudcat. Here's my submission for the next issue:
Back in about 1992, an online friend named Noel Paul Stookey (remember him?) introduced me to something called the Digital Tradition Folk Song Database (DT). I've long since lost contact with Noel, but I've used the Digital Tradition almost every day of my life since then. The Digital Tradition started in 1988. You could send a couple of floppy discs (remember them?) in a postpaid mailer to Dick Greenhaus, and he'd send back the database with a few thousand songs on it, and you could run it on your DOS computer (remember them?). You can still send a DVD in a postage-paid mailer to Dick, and he'll send you back the database – but it's still a DOS program, so you may have to run it in DOSBox if you have Windows 7 or 8. Sometime along the way, the Digital Tradition also became available on the World Wide Web, hosted on a Xerox Website. Xerox got nervous about copyright issues, and stopped hosting the DT on the Web. A young man in Pennsylvania named Max Spiegel had a blues Website called the Mudcat Café, and in 1996 he offered it as a home for the Digital Tradition. He also set up a discussion forum so people could submit or request songs, and the whole shebang opened on October 1, 1996. I really missed the Xerox Website, so I kept looking for the Digital Tradition. I found it again on Mudcat in January, 1997 – and I've been a Mudcatter ever since. Mudcat has developed into a multi-faceted online community over the years – and I'm the first to admit that I don't like many of those facets. Still, the Mudcat has always been the best place to go to for folk music information. Other people go to Mudcat for other things, but I go to Mudcat for the songs. The Digital Tradition Folk Song Database has grown to almost 10,000 songs, and Mudcat has thousands more songs that have not yet been added to the database. If you are looking for studiously accurate information on songs, look for the "DTStudy" and "origins" threads at Mudcat. In those threads, we do our best to present a number of versions of a song, each documented with source information and background notes. We have thousands of songs in the discussion forum that have been thoroughly researched and documented. I used to love reading the "Songfinder" column in Sing Out! Magazine, drinking in the songfinding wisdom of Holly Tannen and Michael Cooney and Shelley Posen and Joe Hickerson and others. It was a real thrill when Joe Hickerson himself recognized ME in his column as an expert songfinder. And, in as much humility as I can muster, I think maybe he's right. In 16 years at Mudcat, I've found hundreds of songs, including original versions of songs that might not have been seen in over a hundred years. It's a thrill, and it always will be. That's why I love Mudcat. You, too, can be a Songfinder. Drop by, and give us a hand. -Joe Offer, Archivist- The Mudcat Café, www.mudcat.org |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I'm not gone/still here! From: Charmion Date: 26 Sep 13 - 07:21 PM I'm still here because some of my favourite people hang around in this segment of the aether. Rapparee and Bobert, Jeri and the Stilly River Sage, gnu and Leadfingers, WYSIWYG and Joe Offer, Kendall and Eliza; all the cat-lovers and dog people; and especially the song chasers and obsessed collectors of Martin guitars -- my world would be rather small and dull without the Mudcat. Subject: RE: BS: Why I'm not gone/still here! From: Donuel Date: 06 Apr 16 - 11:34 PM This is a touching and interesting topic. now for something completely different and true; George Mason University has named a law school after Justice Scalia in order to receive a 30 million dollar endowment. They named it , American Scalia School Of Law, aka ASSOL. Formation of a renaming committee is being discussed. I was invited to post on Mudcat by (name withheld upon threat of dismemberment) . I advocated advancing traditional instruments with new materials, technology and ideas in a TED talk kind of way on Maestronet.com. While everything old is new again, new stuff is attacked. Showing these instruments was considered spam so I have not showed them since. On the internet I am 6 inches shorter, 65 pounds heavier, illiterate, abrupt, a bigot for the left and a fraud compared to real life where I listen lovingly and make people smile. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I'm not gone/still here! From: Little Hawk Date: 07 Apr 16 - 12:13 AM Shane's life is not about merit, Amos. Merit simply doesn't enter into the picture. Rather, Shane's life is about unrestricted, moronic, indulgent self-expression of a totally unproductive sort...and he's proud of it, eh? He is fulfilling "the dream". |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I'm not gone/still here! I know a few members in real life, and I like them all. Those emoticons seem to be something specific to my iPad (which I mostly use for surfing t'interweb), they are part of the pop-up 'keyboard' on the iPad and, presumably, they're available on a Mac too - I can't find a way to do them on my Windows 10 PC! Subject: RE: BS: Why I'm not gone/still here! From: Stu Date: 07 Apr 16 - 09:45 AM I always think that were I to meet most Catters for a pint we'd have a great time. Over the 17-odd years I've been here I have learnt to play the bouzouki, started the guitar (but not for Irish trad - no way hose!) and learnt lots from people with far more knowledge of our traditions than I'll ever have. I enjoy the rough and tumble below the line, but I keep a close eye on the music as this is where the real learning happens. I'm not going anywhere after all this time; I'm not sure anywhere else would have me anyway. |

I plucked up the courage to get it out again the other day. To my amazement it fired up, and even the battery's fine. I had to first upgrade to 8.1, then to 10, all for free, and all's well except that I'm at the bottom of the learning curve. And guess what: the old Vista one's still going strong! |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I'm not gone/still here! From: gnu Date: 07 Apr 16 - 04:40 PM Thanks for that... keberoxu - PM Date: 06 Apr 16 - 12:13 PM I am still here because I have made many friends over those 40,189 posts. The stories, the banter, the friendships that will last a lifetime. I came searching a recording of Garryowen as a Guest and I had answers galore in hours. One was so detailed I was smitten and I will never leave. Over a decade and a half or so, I have experienced so much here. I learned of music, poetry and prose in a manner I would never have thought existed when I simply requested help with finding an Irish Trad song recording. I learned of the internUt itself, it's benefits and it's follies. I stepped way over the line a number of times dealing with trolls in my 'up in your Kent County Fuckin Face' manner and was treated with respect and compassion (read sympathy) by the Mudelves and Max. Over the years, they taught me to keep the Wildebeest calm... although, you know. >;-) Mudchat helped me through some rough times after a surgery recovery in post-op went terribly wrong. Thanks guys... especially Rumanci... I will never forget how much you helped me in my recovery just by chatting with me after you finished those long late night work shifts. I got some great stuff in the Mudcat Auction when I bid stupid amounts of money to make sure Max got his cut... I got a Bodhran for Dani once! That was very satisfying. The mandolin I got was fine and, when I had to give it up, I found a GREAT home for it. I got lot's of CDs and books too (autographed and I always asked for a "separate" CD or book to be sent and the auction to be kept going... that was back when I had cash before the operation that took my livelihood from me). I connected with so many people... Kendall! I watched his TV show years before and to become friends with him through Mudcat has been a joy! There are so many memories. Another that touches my heart is when I reached out after losing my ability to play and sing for a song that I wrote... LEJ went to bat and knocked it out of the park. It's a big hit here in NB.ca among those that oppose the practices used in our forests. Gee... I am starting to tear up. I haven't the time to name all the names of the Mudcatters that have helped me grow as a person and continue to school me in matters beyond music... far beyond music. Leave? Never. Mudcat is commumity. This is Mudcat... Thanks LEJ. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I'm not gone/still here! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 07 Apr 16 - 10:10 PM I'm here because I'm not there. I tried to go there once, but when I got to there it became a different here, and what used to be here became a different there. So, I decided to give up and stay here. It's less confusing. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I'm not gone/still here! From: Stim Date: 08 Apr 16 - 12:47 PM Little Hawk--I hope you will keep us posted on Shane. I know he will not register, because he does not register much of anything, except for mild surprise when one of his "unrestricted, moronic, indulgent self-expressions of a totally unproductive sort.." blows up in his face. His catch-phrase,"I didn't see that comin'" is familiar to emergency response teams throughout Southwestern Ontario. |
Subject: RE: Used up old man From: Joe_F Date: 08 Apr 16 - 09:18 PM Which is the real title of this thread -- the one in the list, or the one on the entries? "Used up", my ****! I'm no bloody use at all. |
Subject: RE: Used up old man From: michaelr Date: 08 Apr 16 - 11:18 PM WTF is going on here? Has Mudcat been hacked? The "EU referendum" thread shows up completely blank. And this one has weirdly changed titles. |
Subject: RE: Used up old man From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 09 Apr 16 - 03:53 AM weird - I opened this thread wondering what it was about & saw the old title & posts from Senoufou who turns out to be our old friend Eliza. dunno what's going on with the thread but so good to see you Senoufou who was once & still is eliza! sandra |
Subject: RE: Used up old man From: Jack Campin Date: 09 Apr 16 - 05:08 AM I advocated advancing traditional instruments with new materials, technology and ideas in a TED talk kind of way on Maestronet.com. While everything old is new again, new stuff is attacked. Showing these instruments was considered spam so I have not showed them since. Give us a link? Maestronet seems to be as old, big and complex as Mudcat (I'd never heard of it before) and there's no way I'll find your post with only that to go on. |
Subject: RE: Used up old man From: Dave the Gnome Date: 09 Apr 16 - 05:12 AM I wonder which one of us the used up old man of the new thread title is referring to! And if he is still here? :-) |
Subject: Why I'm not gone/still here From: keberoxu Date: 09 Apr 16 - 11:10 AM Moderators, excuse me, but what the heck happened to the thread title? What was wrong with the original title? |
Subject: RE: Used up old man From: punkfolkrocker Date: 09 Apr 16 - 11:26 AM Yeah... has a mudelf been drinking on duty.. or is there some tech problem that needs investigating |
Subject: RE: Used up old man From: Donuel Date: 09 Apr 16 - 11:43 AM Beyond decoration I discovered there are some simple but powerful concepts one should obey for maximum benefits. Sound plate: the flater the louder, plate tuning to 3 distinct notes is best. the density of a sound plate is important (micro holes are better than solidity.) Low density vibrates best when balanced with a pliant varnish.. The back plate is to project sound back and not resonate. Ribs that grow thinner at the bottom of a fiddle or cello will project very well. Bottom + toward tail pin. High frequency soundposts that go plink are key. As with the density of water sound travels farther. Having a star of david patterm in a higher density inside the sound pate distributes sound in a most efficient way. This can be achieved my leaving as little as2 tenths of a millimeter of material raised above the rest of the 2 plates. The center of the snowflake pattern should be approximately where the sound post will be. The addition of an ultra light low density sound post of a noisy poly foam material will enhance most fiddles when placed to the left of the end of the fingerboard between the top and bottom plates. (upper left quadrant toward the bottom right.(don't know why it works, it just does) So those are some principles that seemed to work. Some happened in due course in Cremona when wood was washed of its lichten by being transported downstream leaving empty holes where sap used to be. In short, think of the instrument as a speaker and thin the contacts at the ribs and see the instrument like a reed that thins at the bottom. A Strad or a Villiume is subtlety like a reed or a horn with a overall thicker top than the bottom overall. The ever so slight quality of this structure is all that is needed. Overdoing it, is no good. |
Subject: RE: Why I'm not gone/still here From: keberoxu Date: 09 Apr 16 - 12:23 PM Thank you, moderators! Much much better now. |
Subject: RE: Why I'm not gone/still here From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Apr 16 - 04:06 PM Looks like two threads were combined. I'm trying to figure out why. The "BS: Why I'm not gone/still here!" thread was started in 2013. I thought the "Used Up Old Man" thread was started yesterday, but I can't see an original message for that thread. So, I dunno. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Why I'm not gone/still here From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 09 Apr 16 - 08:11 PM thanks Joe, & thanks to Dave fr posting Utah's song which reminded me I really need to sort my CDs so I can find great stuff like Utah's music. sandra |
Subject: RE: Why I'm not gone/still here From: Paul Burke Date: 10 Apr 16 - 04:58 PM This thread was started some years ago by the estimable Mr Happy. And I know that he was barred from Mudshit by an idiot "moderator" some weeks ago. Don't it always seem to go, you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone.. hey I quoted a reel foke song. |
Subject: RE: Why I'm not gone/still here From: gnu Date: 10 Apr 16 - 07:25 PM Mr. Happy was barred? Really? Why? |
Subject: RE: Why I'm not gone/still here From: Steve Shaw Date: 10 Apr 16 - 07:58 PM Mr Happy, barred? Some mistake, surely. If he's been barred then at least a dozen or more of us should have been barred before him. Elucidate, someone up there! |
Subject: RE: Why I'm not gone/still here From: Dave the Gnome Date: 11 Apr 16 - 02:50 AM He ain't been on since the 19th of March but that does not mean much. May be just having a break? |
