I was surprised to see that no one has posted about the incident today on Capitol Hill. A car tried to drive thru the barricades by teh White House and turned around and ran two lights and ran into a police car. The driver, a woman, was shot and killed and she had a one year old child in the car which survived and was taken into protective custody. Two police were injured. The woman was apperently a dental assistant from Connecticut.

I heard about it on All Things Considered this afternoon, and the story was very sketchy. The Washington Post says the incident began at the White House 2:12 PM, and ended when the driver was shot and killed by police at the Capitol at 2:20 PM. There still seems to be no information what led up to all this. Apparently, the driver tried to drive through the security gate at the White House, but was stopped. She then drove down Pennsylvania Avenue and tried to crash through a barrier at the Capitol. Then she drove to a spot behind the Supreme Court, where she was shot and killed. There was a 1-year-old infant in the car.
Sad story.

'Mental health issues' suspected for Connecticut woman who died in DC confrontation is about as much as I've seen on the incident.

She attempted to crash through a barrier at the White House, hit one security officer (hospitalized) leaving that scene, then went toward the Capitol Bldg and tried to crash through another barrier there. A second officer was injured (and hospitalized) when he hit a barrier while pursuing her.

An earlier brief report indicated she may have tried to run down other officers in order to leave that scene, which was implied as the reason for shooting; but details were sparse and that claim hasn't appeared in later reports. "Using a vehicle as a weapon" was suggested as a likely charge on another report.

The report linked indicates a team in hazmat suits was at the complex where she lives, which suggests chemicals were found, but they may not have been in hers ... . (It's DC, after all.)

Apparently both post-partum depression and schizophrenia played a role... and I don't think that shooting someone using a car as a deadly weapon is overreacting, when you're a cop. Glad nobody shot the baby, though. Or crashed her through any windows.

Looks to me like "suicide by cop"...when a person wants to die but doesn't want to kill themself.

Why in such a public fashion, well, who knows? Unless she left some message somewhere or talked to someone, how will anyone know what her motives were?

And why bring your child? I think that shows these people are so focused in on what it is that troubles them, all other things become secondary or even less. In the moment they not even recognize anything but their point of focus. She suffered depression and schizophrenia perhaps as well. In quitter moments she would never have taken her child. Memories of Norman Morrison come to mind.

A 1 ton hurtling piece of machinery is certainly a lethal weapon and I wasn't there to "make suggestions." The police have a job that often is not pleasant but it is what we hire them to do. Do you recall the way Lenny Bruce told it? THE LAW

I think that it yet again underlines the need for good mental health care in the US.

I cannot fault the police. I do fault those who have undercut mental health care, even for the best of reasons. Some mentally ill people should BE in care facilities, others should have community care by people who are trained to recognize and deal with symptoms of the illness recurring. Yes, things were abused in the past -- but we can learn from that (if we have the wisdom to).
