Standard deviation was within the normal range, as was the confidence interval. The average of absolute deviations was thought too personal to study; Δv was approximated; One-tailed probability of standardized Normal distribution was standard, and the chi-square proved the standard deviation to +/- 0.000008. Fourier analysis was thought impractical as it did not apply.

It is possible for half the students to score below average. In a test if half scored 40% and half scored 60% the average would be 50% thus half the students had scored less than average.

Raggytash, I think you missed Roger's point. Tests for scientific purposes must always be rescaled so that median and average coincide. If this is not done, one can complain about the test procedure, but not about the testees. What the Minister may have meant is that British students compare unfavourably to students in other countries, on average.

As for statistics, my own survey shows that 70% of them are designed so that they cannot yield any other result than the one desired by the sponsor, 30% are retroactively manipulated to that effect, and the remaining 10% are absolutely truthful.

In a survey, confidence levels refer to the statistical procerss used (such as randomness).
Most important factors are the questions asked - that are not reflected in the confidence measurement, how the questions were posed and whether there was an opportunity to opt out of questions that do not fit to the respondants perspective and if people questioned were given an opportunity to comment, where they had difficulties with the reply options.

To increase the confidence level of any future Mudcat survey, I suggest that three quesions be added to the top of the survey questions:

1) Are you lucid?

2) Do you know what lucid means?

3)Do you hear ever hear "lucid" talking to you?

Griska, mean, mode, median I can make statistics say whatever I want them to say, you only have to phrase the question in the correct way. For example when did you stop beating your wife!

Recently a poll was carried out asking how many people in the UK thought the Olympic games were beneficial to the nation. Less than 7,000 people were asked, where those people based in London ? If so their were more likely to see a benefit, as that is were much of the Olympics were held. If the same question were asked in the highlands of Scotland the answer would no doubt be greatly different. Are 7,000 people supposed to give a viable cross section of a population in excess of 60,000,000. I think not.

A recent poll of Canadians and USA citizens found that 96.3 percent of respondants felt UK people "talk funny". However, a significant number of "deep south" USA responses were excluded from the results, as the questioners could not understand their response.

The data was based upon a 100% sample of data from the files National Security Agency. Other than being the custodian of the data NSA was in no other way involved and indeed still does not know that they supplied the data, which included photographs taken of the subjects during very private moments indeed. (NOTE: Copies of these photographs are available for an unreasonable price.)
